A PAPER FOR THE PEOPLE.

FLEAS DULY CONSIDERED. Scientist* may have a difference of opinion as to the proper position the flea occupies in entomological classification, bat among many of ogr people there can be no difficulty in ascertaining the exact position it occupies upon their persons. And yet, from the agility with which the ilea travels from point to point, it is sometimes a little problematical to give bis exact locus in quo

at any speci

fied time. "JPut your linger upon him where be Is, and he's not there," is an old saying, tbe truth of which we have all had occasion to certify to. This is the Beaton when they are peculiarly active, and when they have their nightly

without regard to time, place or circumstance. Tbey invade the privacy ol the domestic circle, tbey come unbidden to tbe wedding feast, and bold high carnival on tbe lair body of tbe bride or the manly form of tbe groom. Tbey oome stealthily into the sanctuary, ana often interfere with a full enjoyment of the sermon, or with tbe anticipated nap of the way-firing man. They intrude themselve» upotf tbe sanctity of private

ief, and follow us to tbe confines of tbe when paying tbe last sad rites to tbe memory or the departed. Nor are they any respcc of parsons, making no discrimination oetween tbe prince and pauper, tbe president and tbe policeman. Our town bas a good repute among tbe cities of the land in point of cleanliness, and is proverbial for its tidy housewives it cannot be then that tbeir pretence among us is attributable to a want of proper care

for

our persons, or a due re

gard for our physical Condition, and we sharo in the belief entertained, by many, that tbeir progenitors were brought among us by the Italian organ grinders who periodically visit us, tbe land of tbe song, and sunny skies and vine clad hills being conducive to tbeir propagation. Who can propose a remedy lor tbe evil With tbe assurance that "tbe wicked

flee

when no man pursuetb," we

reasonaoly take courage in the thought that concerted and systematic action for tbeir extermination, would result in rlddimr us of a plague greater than the caterpillar, the grgsshppper apd, potato bug combined.

FOOLISH GIRLS.

Physicians in New York have discov ered that tbe fashion of drug eating pre vails among school girls in that city to an alarming extent. Tbey find that certain of tbe drug stores are in the habit of selling small powders of sulphate of morpbkie, and small vials ol' valerian, ohloroform and other drugs to young girls, at an immense profit to themselves. When on tho girl becomes a victim to the use of these drugs the habit grows upon her until she cannot live without it. Some of the concoctions are pleasant to tho taste, lend a brightness to tbe eye, a oolor to the check, acd a certain mlla intoxication wbicb neither interfere) with the brain power nor with locomotion. The habit creeps upon them so imperceptibly that they hardly know it, and ttie sensation Is so pleasant that they soon become victims to a habit which they cannot shake off. The result i», in a majority of cases, moral death, and so quietly bas the habit spread that an eflort Is to be made to stop tbe sale of the drugs used in New York city, unless tbe purchaser has a pbysioian order calling for tbe prescribed drugs. This step Is deemed necessary in order to save the young ladles, and to provent tbe sale of tbe confectionery In which these drugs are concealed by tbe ingenious druggists.

SYSTEM IN DISH- WASHING. We have yet to hear a woman say she liked dlshed-wasblng. It is, Indeed, a tedious task, and tbe following itomB, condensed from tbe July Wide-Awake, will be read with interest by those who desire to render tbe process less irksome, and are willing to take the trouble to do so:

Keep the out sides cf the plates clean by removing all crumbs and scraps before packing them. The dish-washing of some house-keepers must be very disagreeable and tedious, owing? to their non-observance of this precaution. Stack the table dishes, like to like, in the order of their size in the dishpan, and tbe oooking-dishes In another, Immediately pouring hot water through them all. It is always the quickest way to let them stand thus a moment—it saves a deal of soraplngand rubbing.

Makoyour suds but barely warm, since the diabes are all hot from tbe soaking water, and all greasy particles dissolved and goue. There is nover any need of immersing the entire hand and wrist In scalding dish-water for su hour or two at a time, soaking, reddening, and chap ping It beyond all recovery.

Puncture cno corner of the uit-h-cloth with a fork, and, winding the tines up in It like a cocoon, wash the dishes igitb It, wetting the hand but momentarily during the whole opperatlon.

After pouring on the rinsing water— which have very hot—remove them in stacks to another pan, and place tbem on their edges about some tall dish to drain and dry. Rinse and drain forks and spoons by themselves In pitchera.

Wring your dish cloth as little and Lightly as possible. This will keep it soft, snd a soft dish cloth makes dish washing twice as easy. Keep It sweet by rinsing thoroughly at the last.

Hundreds of soft little white hands are 4not only hardened and spread, but grow 'up fairly distorted, from useless tinging and squeeslng of the dish cloth.

Toilet soap is also recommended, and, by following the above, can be made to outlast a bar of yellow soap.

MOW TO TELL GOOD FLCUit In selecting flour first look to the color. If it is white, with a yellowish col ored tint, buy it. If It is white, WHO a bluish cadt, or with white specks In It, refuse if Second, examine ita adhesive* nesadfl^t and knead a little of It between your fingers if it works soft and sticky, it is poor. Third, throw a UUle lump of dried flour against a smooth surface if it fells like powder, it is bad, Fourth, squeesesomeof tbe flour tightly in your hand if it retains tbe shape given "by the pressure, that, too, hi a good aign. It ia sate to buy flour that will stand all these teats.

Pnoi. STKWART, of Cornell t'nlvesity has found, by actual experiment, tha' ^one-quarter of an acre well set in clover* is sufficient to feed one cow one hundred and eighty days, if cut and fed her, while if allowed to run on it would not probably last two weeks. Another ad* vantage in the care of milch cows is that they give more milk ftom the same amount of food, it being found that walking to and from tbe pasture diminishes the quan'ty of milk.

The youth who does not look up will look down and a spirit that does not soar is destined to grovel.—Disraeli.

The wealth of a man is the number of things which he loves and blesses, and wbicb be-is loved and blessed by.

It is not until we have passed through the furnace that we are made to know bow much dross was in our composition. "Whatever fortune He may send,

Tbe memory of an eye is the most deathless of memoiies, because there, if any where, you catch a glimpse of tbe visible soul as it sits by the window.

The triumph of a woman lies not in the admiration of her lover, but in the respect of her husband, and that only can be gained by a constant cultivation of tboae qualities which she knows be most values.
