OKK by one the old cltisens are passing from us and their remains laid away In the city of the dead. The last to go was Mr. Joseph East, on Sunday afternoon last, after a residence In this city of over fifty years—and, until prostrated many, many months ago by old age and infirmities, an active and useful member of society, honored and respected by the entire community. He was charter member of the first Masonic Dodge organised in this city, and until death was a faithful member.

MRS. ROSALIA EBKBWIKK, an excellent wouian, and long a resident of this citv, died st her home, on south Fourth street, on Thursday. The body was taken to Vincennes, this morning, for interment. *n

FRKD B. PALMER, the well known dealer in tombstones and monuments, after a Ion* struggle with that Incurable disease, consumption, died on Wednesday. He made several trips to Florida with a hope of postponing the dread summons. He was a good citizen, and bis death is a loss to the community.

THB Women's Christian Association, after one month's experiment, laid the foundation for a permanent Home far Erring Women, at a very large meeting at the Congregational church, Menday evetpng. Reports of the most satisfactory and encouraging character were made of the past month's work,' snd right upon tbe spot nearly four hundred dollars were subscribed for continuing the good work. The ity council is to be petitioned to pay the rent of house, and for fuel and medical attendance.

THE Rose Polytechnic Institute is now fully completed. The building contains forty-six large rooms, exclusive of basement, corridors and vestibules. The largest—the lecture room, on the third floor, ha* a seating capacity for 800 persons, with ceiling at the centre hfty feet high. The building is to be supplied with nvator and gas from the city works, and is heated by steam. Machine shops are to be constructed the coming season. The entire cost will be about $200,000— all paid by one man, Mr. Chauncey Rose.

A NEW LIGHT.

There is now on exhibition at A. Reifs gas fitting establishment, on Ohio street a model machine for making gas, the light of which is very brilliant, equal to any coal gas. The cost of manufacturing the ga* is only ninety cents per 1,000 feet. Tbe machine is very simple in its construction, and there is no wear out to it. It is the cheapest machine for the purpose that has ever been invented. The intention of the gontleman, one of our citizens, having it on exhibition is to make this city headquarters for manu factoring the machines. Those wishing a good, cheap light, would do well to call and examine it. With such a ma chine you can make your q.wn gas right at home.
