FEWER reports than usual are coming in of injury to fruit trees and shrubbery by cold weather. Though for a great part of tho time the winter was excessively cold scarcely anything seems to have' suffered. The crop prospects are oxcellent.
CONTRARY to all tho predictions made and provided for this particular occasion, the "January thaw" is going off, in February, without causing an overflow of tho river or even so much as raisiing it enough to oover a single exposed sand-War. Tho Wabash never was so low.
THE annual eloction of directors for the National State Bank took place Tuesday. The board for the ensuing year consists of Messrs. B. Booth, A. McGregor, F. Nlppert, J. II. O'Boyle, G. W. Heme lit, W. B. Warren aud Preston Hussev. The officers remain as before.
The residence of John Gallagher, on south Seventh street, was burglarised Monday night and twenty live dollars belonging to a servant girl in tho family of E. M. Gil man, taken from a trunk. As a general thing, banks are safer places of deposit those times than old trunks.

ON Monday morning when the freight train, ou the E. it C. road, which leaves hero at 4:4.", was somewhere between Farmeraburg and Shelburn, William C. Norman, a youn, brakeman whose parents live at Princeton, missad his footing on the slippery cars and fell beneath the whoels. He was crushed in a horrible manner and died almost instantly.
A SI'MBKR of men standing near the county bridge, tho other day, were guessing at tho value of that pile of lumber belonging to T. B. Johns, which is piled up on too river bank north of Main street. The wildness of some of the guesses was amusing. They ranged from one hundred thousand dollars to two million. Thero is a tremendous lot of lumber, but then wo're no guesser.
THE Cincinnati & Terre Haute railway was sold Wednesday at the court house door at 2 p. m. The sale was was made by John I. Howland, clerk of the United States court, on a decree in a writ for foreclosure by the bondholders. The road was bought for 172,000 by Josephus Collett, W. R. McKeen and W. B. Tuell. No change in the management or running arrangements will be mado at present.
THE gas burners in tho county bridge are provided with glass globes. At least they are supposed to be glass, but they are so encased in dirt and co black with smoko that only an expert would be able to base an opiuion as to the material. If anybody interested in the matter would take the trouble to clean theui the truth might bo ascertained, and there is little doubt that if they were cleaned the gas that is burned in them might partially iight the bridge at night, which it does no- do novr.
ON Monday at a quarter before one o'clock Mike Scully, the man who has been engaged in walking one- thousand miles in as many consecutive hours and finishing up by walking seventy-five uiiles in twenty-four hours, completed his self-Imposed task, at Dowling Hall, making the last mile in a little less than thirteen minutes. On Sunday night his feet began to swell in a most painful manner and he was compelled to abandon his shoes and finish the tramp with his feet bound in soft rags. Ho was game to the last, however, laughing and joking with everybody and showing very little sign of the terrible distress* he must have bee* suSarinj.

THE funerai of the late Victor Manger was very largely attended j'esterday. A brass band of twenty-one pieces headed tho procession playing a solemn and beautiful dirge, and after the body was interred, played "The sweet by and by" over its resting place.
Miss Susie Beach, who* recently resigned her place as a teacher in the public school, was married Thursday, at thp residence of Mr. W H. Paige, to a Mr. Elder, of Vermillion county, said to be a
wealthy farmer, living near Montezuma.
VICTOR MANGER, the well known musician, who has resided in this city for ten years past, died at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, of consumption. He was forty-six years of age. He was always a striking figure in tho Opera House orchestra, and will be missed.
JOHN H. BENNETT, a young man of seventeen, employed in a Fourth street restaurant, was arrested Tuesday for stealing fourteen dollars in money and other articles from the proprietor. He cofessedthe theft and the money was recovered. Ho is at present in the county jail awaiting the action of the grand jury.

THE Vigo County Bible Society publish the following singular card The work of canvassing the county by the Rev. W. A. Jones is suspended for tho present. The Society is unable to provide Mr. Jones with horse and buggy ind there are other reasons, which "the officers deem sufficient for withdrawing recommendations.
