John Hitchcock died in this city at 10 o'clock, on Thursday 28th. He was a soldier of the 83rd lud. was wounded at Kenesaw Mouslain, and worn wit» fatigue and exposure he gradually declined after the war till tbe fatal day. V,

THK Democrat* met in this city on Saturday last, and appointed delegates to the 8th of January convention at Indianapolis. Tbe resolutions adopted and speeches made were not as warlike was probably cxpected. In fact it was evident enough that the leaders of the party here have sufficient common sense to restrain tbe blatherskites, and intend to exercise it in the interest of law and order.

A FIRE Wednesday morning betweerl three and four o'clock destroyed four stables on tbe alley between Fifth and Sixth streets and between Mulberry and Eagle. Tbe staples belonged respectively to Peter Miller, Albert Mewhinney, M. M. Wheeler and John Abbott. In addition to the stable Mr. Miller suffered the loss of a horae, buggy and wagon, and Mr. Mewbinsoy »»t a valuable phceton. The total loss of these gentlemen was something like $100 that of the others probably half this amount.

THE lecture of lion. Amos Myers, on Lincoln, at the Second Presbyterian church, Tuesday evening, was attended bj a fine audience and gave the most unbounded satisfaction. As a literary effort, Mr. Myers lecture has rarely been excelled. It abounds in passages of thrilling interest, pathos and eloquence It was somewhat marred by the delivery, which though not really bad, waa not good enough to appropriately correspond with the matter of tbe lecture. However, it was an intellectual treat.

DuRiNothe entertainment at the Baptist church Christmas night, some cot ton flatting representing snow on the roof of a Santa Claus cottage caught fire and creatod the greatest alarm and confusion. Tbe audience were seleed by a panic ami the most frantic and ludicrous attempts were mado to escape from the building, with tho impression that terrible conflagration was imminent. The lire department was called out and the town generally alarmed but no dam age done or person injured. It was an unfortunate scare and to a great extent spoiled the evening's nmuseraont.

A REWARD of $400 is offered for tbo arrest and detention of John Morgan and Silas Eaglin, two boys who recently in escnpiag from tbo House of Refuge at Plainfield, murdered a "trusty" who formerly lived in this city.

Morgan is five feet three incBes high 15 years of ag eyos, hazel blue black hair medium build dark complexion, with rather a downcast look.

Up to the present writing be says be is in perfect health, and feels safe in ssying to the people that he will be able to complete tbe feat, namely, to walk his last seventy-five miles in twenty-foar hours. Tbe home-stretch mile will occur on the 28th of January,or rather be finishes up bis last hour stone p. m. It is rumored that tbe St. C!air saloon will not be large enough to give all who wish an opportunity to see him, and Capt. Barrett will probably make arrangements to have bim finiah the feat at tbe Opera House or Dowling's Hall. And if such be tbe case be wul announce it beforehand. Scully's best time up to date is eleven minutes and forty-five seconds the longest being thatof twenty minutes and nfty seconds.
