THE HOME.'

HOME LIFE A HUNDRED YEARS fit t. AOO, One hundred years ago not a pound of coal or a cubio foot of illuminating gaa had b«en burned in the couutry. No Iron stoves were used and no oontrivsn em for e*nomixinK beat were employed tmt41 Dr. Franklin invented the irou framed flreplaee wbioh still bears bis name. All the cooking and Harming, in town as well as country, were done iy the aid of fir* kindled on the brick hearth or in the brick ovens. Pine knot* or tallow candles furnished the liaM for the lone winter nights, and sanded floors supplied the place ot ruga tttirl carpets* Tho water used for household purposes was drawn from deep well* by tho creaking "sweep." No form of pump was used in thin coan trV.to far as we can learn, nntll after the «rnimen«?ement of the present centnry. There were no friction matches iu those esrlv days ty the aid of which afire oould be easily klndlei, and if tho fire "w^nt out" upon the hearth over night, and the tinder was dsmp so that the spirks would not catch the alternative remained ot wading through tho snow a mile or so to borrow a brand of a neiglilor. Only one room in any house was warm unless some member of the family was ill in all the rest the tem perature was at zero during many nights in the winter. The men atid women of a hundred years ago undressed and went to their beds in a temperature jcolder than that of our modern barns and woodiheds, and they never complained. -1

OA USE A A'Z CUlt E OF HICK HE AD ACHE.

Dr. W. W. Hall writes thus in The Illustrated Christian Weekly concerning sick headache: "This complaint most liable to affect those who have dark skin, black hair and eyes and are troubled with a confined condition of the system. It is brought on usually by cold feet, too much eating and too little exercise, often being brought 011 by bad cold. It Is not confined to age, sex season or constitution—it sometimes is inherited, "runs in families." Thetxcess or bile in the liver is always the fundamental cause of the disease and its preveniioA is as lollows: Cultivate constant cleanliness of tho whole skin from toe to crown sleep In well ventilated chambers dress to as never to allow a cold chill to come over you never allow tho l*et to remain uncomfortably oold for live minutes spend three or four hours every day In tho open air nover allow a conflnod condition of the system for ninglo day oat regularly thrice a day at not l«w* than five hour*' interval, with not an atom between avoid eo(Toe, sweat milk, porter, pork, fats and sugars—for these all tend to engender a bilious state of the system— and confine your eating to fruits, berries, grapes, melons, coarse bread, lean meats and getables."

JUSTS TO ME REMEMBERED.

lt«mietn*WT to,shak« off and remove all itint from a black garment every time it is worn. Noihmgsooner defaces a black silk, poplin, or woolen than to wear it shopping, rilling or eveu for a day in the House and then hang it up without removing the dust. Tho gritty mote* with which tho air is filled, particularly In regions where coal Is constantly used, grind and wear out any fabric. First shake both skirt and overdress faithfully. A back winds* is a good plnce to shake tb«m from. Then take a so a old handkerchief and brush the dress with tbat instead of clothes brush. See that all the dust that settles in folds or pleats Is removed. 8tand bv an open window and shake tho dust off the handkerchief out of the window every littlo while.

Itemember tbat mirrors should never bebungwlrcro the sun shine* directly upon them. They soon look misty, grow rough or granulated, and no longer give bauk a correct picture. The amalgam or union of tinioll with mercury, which is spread 011 glass to form a looking is easily mined by the direct, continued exposure to the solar ray*. ,1,-t sui* jpt

Remember that one can have the bauds In soap suds with soft soap with out injury to the skin If the kanus are dipped in vinegar or lemon Juice Immediately after. The acid destroys the corrosive effects of tho alkali and makes tht hands soft and white. Indian meal and vinegar or lemon Juice used on the hands when roughened by coldot labor, wjll heal and soften them. Hub the bands In this, then wash oft tl». roughly nad rub In glycerine. Those who suffer from chapped hands in the winter will find this comforting.

Hetnember never to leave clothes lines out week niter week, but tske them down snd wind them on the reel, as soon a* the clothes are dry. With this care, a clothes line will las*t years. But if left out, wind and rain wilt mildew and rot the line, and it will soon become worthies*, Added to this, the clothes will be Colored from the line and dirty streak* almost impossible to remove will be seen where they rested on it. ltem«mt*r that a tablespoonful of black pepper will prevent grey or bufl linens fnm spotting, if stirred into the i\ni water in which they are washed. It will also prevent the colors running, when washing l»!aok or colored cambrics or muslins, sad the water is not injured by it, but Just as ao(l as before the pep* per was {Hit iu.

Rempmtier that the wings of turkeys, geese, and chickens should never be thrown away. Many people, especially in the country, keep them simply to bmsboffthe stove or range, but there ia nothing better to wash and clean windows. Chamois or buckskin is vary good, but wings are better, and cost nothing, asd their use is an economy— utllltfng that which would otherwise be thrown away. They are excellent to clean the hearth or stove, to dust furniture, but beet of all to wash windows, because the corners oau be easily and perfectly cleaned by them, leaving no lint, behind, as when cloths are used. Use these wings also to spead on paste when papering walls. There is nothing that dom that kind of work better.

Remember tbat if brooms are dipped for a minute or two Into a kettle of boiling suds once a week, they will last much longer. It makes tbera tough, but pliable, and a carpet Is not worn half as much by sweeping with a broom »o cared ftir. A good bJnsekeeper will see that iter brooms are all thus scalded.

Itemember that a fine past# for scrap books oan be made from alum water and floor. A teaspoon fa 1 and a half of pounded aluttt dissolved in enough cold

water to make a pint of paate. Pour the water, when the alum la all dlsaolved. on to enough flour to thicken It as stiff as oommon paate, bring it to a boll, stirring ail the time, and when done, add arew drop* of oil of cloves. The alum prevents fermentation, and the oil of cloves will prevent or deatroy all vegetable moid.

Remember that old newspapers will pat the finishing touch to newly cleaned silver, knives and forks, and tin ware, better than anything. Rub them well, and make perfectly dry. They are alas excellent to polish stoves that have net been blackened for some length of time. —{Mrs. Henry Ward Beecber in the Christian Union.

useful knowledge is kept from the world because of tho immense expense in making them known to the people. This is not the ease wi:h Bosghkk's Gkkman Syrup, although but a few years introduced into this country its ssle now reaches in every town and village in the U. 8. Its wonderful success in curing Consumption, severe Coughs, Asthma, and all other diseases of the throat and lungs, was first made known by distributing every year, for three yean, over 400.000 bottles to the afflicted free of charge, by Druggests. No tjuch a test of merit was ever given before to any other preparation. Could you ask more? Go to your Druggist and get a bottle for 75 cents and try it. Sample bottle 10 cents. (dl6-eow)
