FOR THE

PEOPLE.

^faSBSFMCT, AT HOME. Ooa ttbe danger* of borne life is thla habit of which is brtd ""byfiunftlMtY. People who are all beau ty and sanshltfe for a crowd of strangers for whom they have not the slightest affection, are all Ugliness and gloom for their own, by whose love they live. The pleasant pret tineas of dress and personal adornment, whloh mark the desire to please, are put on only for the aduuira tion of those whnee ad in ration RIK** for noihiof while the house companions are treated only to the ragged gowns and threadbare coats, the tousled hair and stubby beard, which, if marking the ease and comfort of the san*facon of home, mark also indiflTerenoe and dlnre1 spect which do so much to damage the sweetness and delicacy of daily Hie.

And what is true of the dress is truer still of the mannersand tempers of home, in lxth of which we tlnd too often that waut of respect which runs side by side with affliction and the custom offamil iarity. It is a regret able habit under any of Its conditions, but never more so than when it invades the ho ne and en dangers still more that which is already too lnnch endangered by other things.

Parents and up brin«fln» do not pay enough attention to this in the young. They allow habits of disrespect to be formed—rude, rough insolent, impatient —and snlve over the sore with the ster (Otyped excuse, They mean nothing by it," which, if we look at it aright, is worse than no excuse at all, for if they really do mein nothing by it, and their disrespect is not what it seems to be, the result of strong anger, uncontrollable temper, but merely a habit, then it ought to be conquered without loss of time being merely a manner th»t hurts ail parties alike.

MISTAKEN ECONOMY. When danger of any Kind threatens a loved one, bow quickly it dwarfs into insignificance all worldly considera lions! Yet bow little do we think of this save when the grim spectre draw* near We go heedlessly along our daily way, thoughtleaxiy unmindful of the health and strength of the dear ones abont u«, as though the crnel pangs ol separation w« re unknown Thisthougl was brought to iny mind in a distressing maimer a short time since, having been tailed upon to minister to the dying needs of one of our distant n«igb»Hr women who hnd been for some week)* ill of a low, lingering fever verging on typhoid, which oondltion was donhtlei* brought atwut in great uu.«a*urH by long continued overstraining of strength and energy, along with a disregard of proper dietlc habits. SLEEP.

There Are two kinds of sleep—the com plete ami tho incomplete. Complete sleep is a temporary metaphyseal death, though not an otguuic one. Tho heart and lungs perform tludr offices with their see i-toined regularity. It is character zed by a torpor oftheorgsns or the brain, of the external senses, and of voluntary motion*. Incomplete sleep is the activity of one or more of the cerebrian orgtns, while the others are in repoen this occasions dreaming. Sleep Is variously affivt.nl by health and disease. Man in time of health sleep* in tranquility. He arises iu tho morning refreshed and prepared to go forth to his daily labor. Now strem th Is given hun Ian guor Is gone, anil all tho faculties, Vo.li mental and corporeal, *re reorult ed. But the sle*p of disease is far different. It is short and unrofreshing (listurled by feartut sights and Irightful dreams. Stupor and sleep are different, though supposed by tno to be syuono mou*. In both there la Insensibility: but it is easy to awaken a person from sleep, whjle it in sometimes aim'wt im possible to amuse one from stupor. It is frequently tho case in slckno* that tbe person Ilea for several days in stupor, totally Inssusibie. Though sleep be -natural and nwwsssry \r iho languid, mental, and *rptraal faculties, yet it l.« often brought on by some external cause. Heal produoas sleep. We witnms it in tbe summer season: it is nn mon to the laborer devotiug an hour in the heat of the dav to sleep. A h»«ated church Is likely to bring on sleep. Variety, whether In sight or sound, prevents sleep, while monotony of all kinds is apt to produce It.

WORKING FOR WOMQN. Some months ago a young lady Michigan, described by tbe local press as a "talented" girl, signed a contract with a presumably "talented" Michigan man, by which Ue two agreed to live together in what most person* would call tbe unholy estate of Woodhullery. Tbe ooutrut really amounted to au agreeuienttba- the tuguers would not oind themselves to do»uything, etno^ it carefully gave either psrty the right to leave the oilier at any tiuie, and without any reason. It was, therefore, merely a form by which tbe signer* sought to protest against all marriage tortus woatever. As a legal iuatrum.-.nt. capable of beiug made tbe ba»is of a suit at law, it was worthless, but as an illustration of the subtlety of tbe "talented" Michigan mind in rappilug with the problem of bow to bind two poreoua to a freedom rroin all restraint it was not wholly de void ol interest. The "taleuted" pair, having published their contract to the world as a solemn protest against tbe crime of marriage, left the locality in wnicu their la ents had previously been displayed, and vanished iroin public gaxe. but they were not lorgotten. A wicked Chicago editor, whoae inability to tell the.truth was doubtless due lotue corrupting lntiuences of marriage, lately puolisbed a paragraph asserting thai the yuung women had already bad enough 01 Woodhuilism," and bad returned to her lather's house, "a ruined, pitiful creature Imploring t'orgivness and a place to bide her laoeaud shame." v.lmreupo tbe editor was utterly disconuiied and put to sbsuie by a letter irom the •'talented" young person liersolt, who, aiter meutioning tuat "iriendsare send ing" her the obnoxious paragraph—as it was morally Certain that all btr really warm- earted friends would do—contradicted tbe editor's assertions, aud reaiiirmed her faith in tbe gospel ol Mrs. sVooUbuli. She solemnly declared Ibashe"nad uot bad enough ol Woodhuilism," but that on the uoowaiy, she constantly olauured lor more. Sue admitted that she bad recently visited her fatner's bouse, but a*serled that she bad made tnu visit in accordance with an ear

request, and she tiuisned Uer letter by proclaiming that sUe bad returned 10 her own home "to continue bt.r work for women." This foollsn young woman, who, lu spite of her talents, *ians herself "MHttie" exhibits in a conspicuous degree ttie curious sali-ooiiceit of the average "social relormer." she uai done nothing very extraordinary in committing Woohullery. There are, unfortunately, some thousands ol womeu iu this country who have bt«n guilty ol the same offence, and who have never dreamed of challenging publicadmiratiuu on ibataocount.
