City and Vicinity.

HERE we go on tho last half of tho year. THE lirm of Frank Heinig tfe Bro. has gone into bankruptcy liabilities ?2S,000.

THE new flag ordered by the city council has arrived. It is 15 by 27 feet »nd cost $&.25.

«...

THE young gentleman who declared yesterday that it was too warm to eat, changed his mind when he was invited out to dinner.

HORSEBACK riding is becoming dally inore popular In this city. It is a pleasant and healthful exercise and should bo encouraged.

THE new Catholic church iiythe northeastern part of the city is to be dedicated to-morrow. Rev. Father Chasse, of St. Mary's, will conduct the services

DAN MILLER'S grocery, corner of $oventh and Spruce streets, was burgled, Monday night, thirteen dollars in money and half a box of cigars constitute tho ontire loss.

THE engine house, on Lafayette street was struck by lightning, Tuesday evening. The alarm box was knocked out of place and the flagstaff shivered to splinters. No other damage to anything or anybody.

IT has rained nearly every day for the past two weeks and much uneasiness is folt regarding the crops. The river is rising rapidly and an overflow is anticipated. People generally are "looking down their noses."

AIARRIAOK LICENSES.—Tho following marriage licenses have beon issued by the County Clerk slnoe our last report:

Sauford W. Keys and Flora E. Butlon, John B. Watson ami Mary L. McKay., James Hlrnfer and Mary J. Harmon Hoffman and Myy htnann.

TKE residence of D. P. Blssell, In the northeastern part of the city, was struck by lightning, Sunday evening, and suffered considerable damage. Mrs. Blssell and the children were rendered unconscious for several minutes but suffered no other sorlous injury.

THE chief of the flr© department and the Are committee, of New Albany, were here on Tuesdaf to examine the workings of the water works as applied to the extinguishing of fire®. Several tests were made and the visitors expressed themselves mnch pleased.

ALL persons residing ont of town who m.-vy atlend tho Fourth of July celebration in this city, should boar in mind the grand display of fire-works to take place In the evening, and make their arrangements so that they can remain over and witness what, it is expected, will be the giandeat pyrotechnic display ever seen In this city.

WITH this issue, The Saturday Evening Mall starts in upon its seventh year, with a larger circulation than it has had at any time during Its existence. No paper published in this city haa ever approached it in the number of copies issued. We have In contemplation a project by which w#ar» confident that the present enormous circulation of The Mall will be more than doubled before the cloee of the present year. Our plans are not fully matured, but will probably be put STK operation in a abort time.

—A delightful time is anticipated on Steamboat, 4th of July.

THE FOUBTH.

Tho arrangements ate now perfected and all the committee*) are at work for the grandest oelebration of the Foui *h of July ever witnessed in this city,

The day will be ushered in at four o'clock by the ringing of fire and ohuroh bells, and a salute of thirteen guns at sunrise.

At five o'clock all the bnn bands on the corners of Main street^ from Forrth to Ninth.

At ten o'clock the procession will be formed, consisting of military, the fire department, benevolent orders, representations of induatiiftrade", with patriotic devices, etc.

The line of March will be on Ohio to Second, north on Se« jnd to Main, east on Main to Seventh, north on Seventh to Chestnut, east on Chestnut to the depot, and from then-e, by tho *9 wisl ng to continue, to the fair ground*.

At the fair grounds a national saiute will be fired at twelve o'clock, a.*er whieh the exercises will consist of music, reading of declaration, aud orations, followed by games and other amusements.

At night, in the open space wntof the Terro Uaute House, will be given the finest display of fire works ever displayed in this city.

I* view of the fact that the approaching Fourth of July will bo tho one bundreth biithday of the nation, and that our jple intend to abandon themselves to gi\'ng vent to their patriotic feelings in' a mammoth public celebration, a prom'nent feature of which will be a grand procession participated in by all our citizens and large delegations of visitors from tho surrounding country, would it not be in good tasto and appropriate (o the occasion to decorate all houses, shops and stores with flags, bunting and other emblems of the n? tion's glory and greatness. Let the national colors stream l.-om every window aud the stars and stripes float over every dwelling, giving evidence to aJl beholders that we are filled 1th she spirit of (3. Lat the principal streets be spanned with mammoth arches trimmed with evergreens and floral decorations and bearing the national coat of arms and other patilotic devices.

Lot evoiybody take a pail in the demonstration and make the day we celebrate a meuiorablo one in. tire pity's l%!st ry.

HOOLEY'S MINSTRR'-S

Had a large audience at the Opera House last night, despite the rain, and better plepsed audience has seldom met there. The company is first class in every respect, and pos«:^?os more of what may be tioly called stars than any minstrel troupe that \Jsits us. Tbey will have a cort"al weloomo at any time they may return.

THE WFFARKE XOVFr.TY TROUPE will bo here on the Fourth, and give two performances, a.*ernoon and evening. We are assured that this is a strong organization, and will give performances admirably suited to the national holiday. Several members of the company, (including the favorite Miss Fannie Beane), were here recently 1th the late Rolin Howard troupe. Then there is Miss Nellie Taylor, Mls^ Da../ Duroll, the Hamilton Sisters, George Beane, Homer and Holly, Tom Warfield, Conroy and McEvoy, Ac, Commencing at eight o'clock, Prof. Church the Calcium Light operator, will give a free exhibition Arom the balcony of the Opera HouSo. la

IT Is ibt, unfortunately, generally known that in the case of fire In buildings containing horses, if the harness be put on—however roughly—tho homes will quit the stables. A knowledge of this fact may be the means of saving many a valuable animal i.'om a horrible death.

THAT VKXA TIO US FL Y. How a man in bod will fight the flies these fine warm mornings! First they jget hiin on the feet—be doxes—he kicks, liioon ho covers up those extremities. They make exploration* down bis arias and nlay at tag on tho back of his hands. Ho ooxas still—he flops his arms irom side to side. No use the tormentors are off only to return the next second. Sufficiently awakened to realize the cause of his disquiet, ho polls the sheet up light to his neck and drops off again. Nowlbey perambulate his cheeks, they tick'e the cornsr of his eye, they boldly mount his nose and race down the sides, tbey trv to Ibroo an entrance to his mouth, tbey sren play base ball In his ear. He doses still—he aiaps frequently and frantically, he turns, he twiste. and eventually pulls tho clothes entirely over bis heaa. Now It waxes warm. A foot slips out of the oover and is speedily attacked by the greedy little pests and so on. It varies with a man's temperament and his physical ability to withstand slow suffocation how long be submits to this torment, but in the end the fly always oonquera, and the man forced to get up at an unreasonably early hour. Header, you know bow it is yourself.

TfiBRE HATJTB SATURDAY EVENING MATJ.

THE Express this morning publishes a call, signed by .three hundred voters, for a meeting at the City Hall to-night to repudiate the action of the Cincinnati and St. Louis conventions. The signers of the call seem to be pretty equally di

Ided between the two parties. ii COMPLAINr has been made of a number of young pr iple, of both sexes, who have been in the habit of attending the U. B. church, on Fourteenth street, for the purpose of raising a disturbance. It has been determined in case of further annoyance, to call in the polico for the purpose of preserving order.

MB. EDMUND GROVKB, brother of the late Joseph Orover and father of Miss Marietta Orovar of the city schools, alter a long illness, died at his residence in Lost Creek township, Fridsy evening, June 30th, of paralysis. The deceased was 74 years of age and a most highly respected citizen. Tho funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at 3 o'clock, frsm the residence of Mrs. E. B.
