Mr. Brown is a gentleman well knpwn In this part of the state, and the people oQliiz county will do a very sensible act In placing him in the position to which he aspires. He hwi beeu a resident of Terre Haute since 1810, with the exception of a few years, during which he was editor of the Gre.ncastle Banner He was also, for a time, pottmaster at that place, under Lincoln, and wo3 turned out by Andrew Johnson, because ho could not sustain i-r. Johnson,in his perfidy to the Republican party and Ihe country. lr. Brown also established the Terre Haute Gazette, a Republican paper, in connection With Maj. 0. J. Smith, now of the Express. While connected with the Gazette, Mr. Brown was, (or no good reason, shot down iu the streets of Terre Haute by a deputy »heriffand roliceman named Er ney. He has always been a firm and trustworthy Republican, standing square up to the party and its principles, even at the risk of his life by the hands of an assatin, and Vigo countyowes it to herself to give hiin a triumphant eleclon. ,.

Allen's New York Varieties and Spectacular Combination closed their engagement at the Opera House last evening to one of the largest audiences of the season. It is no wonder that this well known No* York City troupe attracted such large crowds during their week's engagement in this city, as their programme embraced the best talent and

A .f AUAA 1 V\A VWA

most varied sketches that could be p: duced. The St. Felix Ballet and Specialty Troupe have always boon warmly appreciated by our show-going citizens every time they appeared in our city also Messrs. Chace, Davis, Jeppe and Allen, the four talented end men and comedians. The ballet and other attractive aitlstes with Manager A-l Ion's company have also been well received. We are advised tlmt they will reappear here next Auepist, on their way back from the fat Wost to New York City.

Two circuses irethe near future.-? A spectator at the Thirty-fourth street Opera House in New York, the other night, was not pleased with the performance, and, calling the manager a fool, he sprang upon the stage, flourished a cane, and dispersed the performers. He was fined ten dollars, and held in oiio thousand dollars to keep the peace.

The skittish little Mrs. James A. Oates, who waltzed that number one gaiter around so gracefully on Opera House boards is in hot water again. She bas refused to carry out the engagement she made in New York in February with James Allison, of the royal theaters at Sydney and Melbourne, to play twenty-four weeks in Australia next summer, and signed an engagement with Maguire, of San Francisco, for the whole season. Mr. Allison will site her for fl5,000 damages.

Sothern says that among his characters he likes Dundreary best, "because it is my own cretion, and will die wiften I die. The character Cniiip6s m6 (Jtrite as much as it does the audience. I could introduce new dialogue and new ideas every night if it were not for confusing the people who support me. Wildly idiotic as most of Dundreary's remarks appear, they are grounded on thought* that I am convicted pass throng minds, and every word that a motive and a distinct meap mistake that any sort oi no do for Dundreary. With all hisa^Mrdities, 1 have always found an exhibition Of respect and liking for his lordship. He just escaped, according to my idea, being a very clever man. He turns into ridicule numberless old proverbs that have been accepted for truths from time Immemorial. The only blemish in his eharacter is his utter selfishness. THE con URjfVoPENING." The daily papers for several days past have been full of mentiona of the recently refurnished Coburn Saloon, Third Street, between Main and Ohio. Now and then a reader may have thought these accounts of its magnificence overdrawn, but to those who have seen the place, thoy must hsve seemed almost tame, so far short of the real truth have they fallen. It is without question the handsomest place to the city, perhaps In the State.
