A PAPER FOR THE PEOPLE.

BEHIND THE SCENES.

I wonder how many of my dear read ere, as they lean graoeftiiiy out ot their opera boxes and survey the fairy aoane on the stage before tiietu, bare any idea of how It looks be bind the Scenes. Come with mo a moment, and I will show you. Do you aeo that lovely little bal cony jutting oat from that second story window? Of course you do, for, an you look, the »ritna donna st&ps gracefully forth, and warbles a song to the atara Yoa envy her pictureeque surroundings, and imagine that she stepped througt the easement out of a dainty boudoir. Jsot a bit of it. With trembling limbs she scaled a shaky' ladder, treading on her drew* at every step, and mentally blessing the carpenter. Her luaid holds her train, and tho stage manager and one of the chorus guide her uncertain f(XtsU«{»s. Everything is dark and gloomy iiefore her eyea. In a moment she hteps out upon the balcony, and faces the applauding audicnce itli an angelic smile upon her countenance, while sho wonders if tho props are per fectly secure, and whether the whole thing will come down and cripple her for life. Then she sings her song, and steps out upon the little platform, and backs down into the arms of her mother who wraps a shawl around her shoul dor*, while maid again takes up the train, sud the three run into the aress room to get out of the way of the draughts. Another thing the sudience dote on is a chorus song without accom panlment— sort of impromptu, you Know. But they should seethe prepar utioiiK mado for the impromptu. The boat is about leaving the wharf and tho sailors stand around to sing a parting song. Tho leader, who is generally an excitable German, gets them together, and tho audience wait in pleasant expectation. He counts one, two three, and gives tho pitch. "Mein Gott! attone below and ho rushes away with his fingore in his ears, while the men sing on as lustily as though they were on the right track, and the audience says, "How sweet!" In "Tho Star of the North," whoa Cathari ii goes to the wars, she gets on board a boat, snd sails away. It looks beautiful from the front whero everything ssem "so real. All thero is like a boat is a painted side. .She steps upon a platform on rollers, and 1m pulled along ly a couple ot stalwart sccne-shiAers standing in the wings. Sometimes the rollers want groaning, and stick bo that no pulling r.ill budge them then the singer, ifshe lias presonco of mind, steps upon the stage, and wriggles out with as little of tho motion of walking as possible. One night when Mips Kellogg was playing "Snoinumbuln," as Bhe was crossing the bridge, the planks broke, not in the usual way. but really, and left the gentleman who was leading her along 011 tho other side standing in bold relief before tho audience—dress coat, crush hat and all. Fortunately no harm came of tho accident. One night Mr. Lawronce Barrett and Miss Marie Gordon were playing a part on top of a tower some twenty feot abovs tho stage and,

i*while

they were up there, something

Cracked, and tho whole thing swayed to nnd fro like a ship at sea. The props had not hocu made firm, and had the actors not luckily gotten down in time, they would have been killed, or worse. shall not repeat what Mr. Barrett said .to tho stngo carpenter. At another time Miss Gordon was playing in England and during, the performance sho had a tussle with one of the actors on the edge of a clifT at the back of tho stage, oft which sho Anally rolled. It was the •itage manager's business to see that a

ouplo of mattrosses were spread under but ho neglected nls duty one Levoning. Of course Miss Gordon aidn't know it, and she was backing down to.vards the prceiplco. Ono of the scene--hitters, a sturdy Englishman, seeing ier coming and discovering at the same uimo that the mattresses were not in [their place, not knowing what else to lo, threw himself at full length under It he rocks, and the act reus came down, fwhaok! upon his broad back and saved her 11 Co. Tboso who know Miss Gordon will knnwthtt the quick-witted sceneshifter was not forgotten, and those who

I KSa H' WHERE HE IS QOINQ."

When Philip Henry, the father of the -clebratod commentator, sought the fnand of tho only daughter and heiress of Mrs. Matthews in marriage, an 6biectlon was made by her father, who admitted that ho was a gentleman, and 'hoiar and an excellent preacher but lie was a stranger, and "they did not I even know where ho came from.' 'True,' I said the daughter, who bad well weightlie excellent qualities and graces of the stranger, 'but I know where he is going, and I abonld like to go witb him," and they walked life's pilgrimage I'ogether. How honored wcuid that reluctant Rtther havo been, could he have ireseen that his daughter would bo the other of Matthew Henry! And how iftoront would be the world's estimate of men, if they were Judged lesSb their I origin, and more by their destiny! There is one nrido of family highly commeud(able: there Is another pride of family sneflfcbly con tern 11 blc.
