TERKE HAUTE SATURDAY-EVENING- MAIL.
Spring has oome! Don't be alarmed however, Rlppetoe was here before spring was and baa engaged to stay right along. His two grocery stores—both daily—are the pride of Terre Haute. In them, all the young and tender vege tables find a refuge and a resting place. Rosy cheeked radishes mske hot love to modest pie-plants, while the innooent asparagus, the trembling lettuce and the sweet-breathed onion feel a thrill of pleasure at each successive exclamation of "Oh! how nice!" from the crowd that pass slong the st reet. Pompous looking poultry dressed in the most elegant and approved style nod famlllsrly to their round-faced relations, the fair but fragile eggs, while the golden country butter takes up her light guitar and ngs thus of Rlppetoe: "He will chase the strawberry over the plain, the young potato he'll bind with a chain, while the pea and the bean and horseradish sweet, he'll give to the public for tbcm to eat."

The 17th day of April. 1S78, is the last day for paying your city ta.ee* for 1875, and it should be'borne in mind that the hole amount chargcd in the duplicate muat be paid on or before that day, fora penalty of 10 per cent, will be added to all taxes remaining unpaid after that date. The Legislature at the last regular se»l®n changed the time for paying from the third Monday of March to the third Monday of April and there can be no extension beyond that time. A great many people have gotten tbe idea that the penalty is simply at the rate of 10 per cent, per annum, and that after it is once added the taxes need not be paid for a year. This is a serions mistake. The per cent, is a penalty wtdrd for non-pay-ment, and the Treasurer is required by law to proceed to collect all delinquents Immediately after the I'lerk has added tbe penalty and returned the delinquent list to him, which at the farthest will not be later than the 1st of June next, when the tax of each and every delinquent wlli be placed in the bands of a special constable (or collector) for collection. It will be seen then, that Instead of paying 10 per cent, per annum, yon roally pay from 40 to 00 per cent., and that it would be much cheaper to borrow money at a big per cent, per annum with whicn to pay your taxes than to let them run delinquent. Those who have real estate will confer a fkvor Bv calling at tho office between now and the 1st' or April to see if the property is correctly listed, so that receipts can W made out.
