chiefs bad been hastily applied, and the bent and tattering figures of a moment ago had given place to brtjad-ahouldered men and full-breasted girls. Henry caught Jessie around the waiat, Fran*, Nellie and Oeorge, Mary, and with one of the little girls at the piano, op and down tho room they dashed to the m®r riest of waltzes in 'the maddest round that ever was danced. There was a reckless abandon in their glee, as if the lCiS* of life, the glow and fire of youth, its glorious freedom and its sense of boundless wealth, suddenly set free, after Jong repre«ion, had intoxicated them with its strong fumes. It was such a moment as their life-time would not bring again.

It was not till, (lushed and panting, laughing and exhausted, they earoe to a pause, that they thought of Grand nui Fellows. She was crying, and yet smiling through her tears.

Oh, grandma," cried Maty, throwing her arms around her, ana bursting into tears, "we can't take you back with m. Oh. dear."

And the other girls cried over herand kissed her in a piteous, tender way, feeling an if their hoarU would break lor the pity of it. And the young men were conscious of moisture about the eyes as they stood looking on.

Hut Grandma Fellows smiled cheerily and said: I'm a foolish old woman to crv, and you mustn't think it is because 1 want to bo young again. It's only because I can't help it."

Perhaps she couldn't have expluined it better.

Released Jrom Imprisonment-^ The Many Changtvr Din ing thai Time.

(From tho Columbus, (0hio\ Dispatch.] James Firmer. agod 73 years, formerly a citizen of Washington county, Ohio, the penitentiary tof}rvcrnor Haves. The prisoner wlis'convicted of having killed his wife thirty years ago, and thrown her into a well, lie has always denied the charge, acd might, it is believed, havo received a pardon years ago if he had admittod his guilt. On account of his persistent denial of tho charge, the citizens of Marietta, believing him guilty, declined to niovo in a manner that would secure pardon. But it btw now come at last. Thirty years has this man stoutly contended that ho was innocent.

ras pardoned out day, by

The facts, in a word, were: His wife leit home Monday, as he says, to visit a brother in-law wli« had a sick child, and was not heard of until the following Wednosday, when neighbors came in and Insisted that Mr. Fraser should look for her. She ,l$ft an unweaned baby In his care. He, up to that time, had made no effort to tlnd her. She was found in the bottom of the well, head downward, with her dross on wrong side before. Tho theory is that tho couple had trouble during the night, in bed, and that he choked her, and unintentionally cut off her breathing. That he then, man like, got tho dress* on wrong, and threw her in the well.

For tho last fifteen yoars Fraser has been a sort of a genoral marker about the prison. Ho marked clothing, marked prison doors, marked everything that needed marking about the State shop. Mr. Fraser is a Scotch Highlander by birth, and a Presbyterian by religious profession. Ho would not wrong a man out a cent, on any account. He has a son-in-law in Southeastern Ohio who is a Methodist Episcopal clergyman another son-in-law in West Virginia who is a Common Pleas Judge. Rev. U. W. Waketield, of Johnstown circuit, Licking county, camo to the city to-drtv, aud reccivocf tho old veteran prisoner to conduct him to his friends.

A few dtvs ago a visitor to tho prison from Champaign county, hearing the history of Fraser, and liking his appearance, gave him twenty-live dollars. Fraser went out of prison with eighty dollars and two suits of clothes, an overcoat, and was well pleased, considering his outfit and his pardon, a glorious present. 4n all of that thirty year* there is but one black mark In Mr. razor's record, and that was made for talking, ear!y in his prison history. He evidently violated the rulo unlntentlon-

Pardon was issued upon the ground that the State could not reap any benefit from further detainment, and his friends having «greed to take care of him, it was deemed bont to let tho old prisoner go. His conviction was upon circumstantial evidence, and his thirty years denial still lea the matter in doubt in some minds. He is of sound mind and dody, straight in form, six feet high, Mid weighs one hundred and sixty pounds, lie had noverseen a locomotive—except distant and eccasional glimpses from uppor windows ot the kospital or the old chapel. lie was, all the way up street, wondering like a child about the telegraph wires, the concrete pavement on Hurh street, the street cars, and the beautiful iron fronts of some of tho building*. These things had their birth in OoluOibus and in Ohio after he was shut up—it was suip«*h1 forever.

Mr Fraser was fortv-four yeArs of age when lie came to prison, aud had two or three children. lie baa discounted Kip Van Winkle by ten year*, but has the advantage of Kip in being able to reftl. »y reading the newspapers he WM pw&J •©me about tbo world, and had some knowledge from ploirues how new inventions looked. Hut, in spite of *U that, much of the outside wan new was to him as it would be to a child. The case of pardon has been discussed for fifteen yoara, «fid ex-Warden Burr
