TERRE HAUTE SATURDAY EVENING- MAIL!
THE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. Hie Society assembled at the reaidenoe of Mr. J. O. Jones, on Thursday last. Present, forty-four members. Vios President A. B. Pegg prodded, aMd|tfd by Mr. Joseph Gilbert, Secretary.
Reports were made as follows: On small fruita, by Mr. J. B. Haaey on vegetables, by Mr. William ScholtR. Mrs. Joseph Gilbert read a very entertaining and instructive article on housekeeping. Mrs. Schulta'a essay upon Thought evinced both thought and feel ing, and inonlcated a high standard of duty and usefulness for Intelligent and responsible beings. Capt. Pottor read an essay upon Conscience, illustrating the subject by copious scriptural quota tlons. The quotation "Can national difficulties be settled without resort to w«r, and ought they to be so settled was then discussed. The poaoo side was ably represented by Col. It. W. Thompson and Rev. Mr. Sterrett. Mr. C. W. Barbour quoted from Ruskin upon war as a necessity among nations, purifying tho body politic as the storms da the atmosphere. Capt. Potter thought that through war we should reach the millenium. Messrs. Modisett, Weir, Hulman, Pegg and Gilbert participated in the discussion, which was closed by Cul. Thompson, and ii was evident that the society were of the opinion that "Peace hath her victorias, no less renowned than Warand that It is the duty of all to cultivato a spirit of peace and brotherhood among nations, as well as amoiig individuals, and that national difficulties should bo settled by arbitration rather than war. The next monthly meeting will be at tho house of Capt. S. II. Pottor. Question for discussion What can be dono to promote tho horticultural interests of Terro llauto and vicinity. It would bo doihg injustice to tbe hostess to omit stating that tho dinner was excellent.
