But you are not the wolf," she an swered, with a smile like sunshine bending to drink from tho ctfp he held
As she lifted her head, the blue eyes aud the black exchanged again tho sub tie glance of sympathy that made them friends before only now the blue ones looked up full of gratitude and the black ones looked down soft with pity, Neither spoke but Letty stooped and gathering old Sally in her arms, kiss«d the friendly creature, then followed her guide to the door.
How beautiful!" she cried, as the sun came dazzling down upon the snow that hid all dark and ugly things with a veil of purity. "liooks kind of bridal.. Don't it?' said tho man, taking a long breath of the frosty air and straightening himself up, as if anxious to look hi* best by daylight. ile had never looked better, in spit* of the old coat and red shirt lor the glow of the furnace tire still seemed to touch his brown face, the happy visions of tho night still shone in his eyes, and the protective kindliness of a generous nature gave dignity to the rough figure us he strode into the snow aud stretchec his hand to Letty, saying cheerily:
Pretty deep. But hold on to me and I'll get you through. Better take my hand, washed it a-purpose."
Letty did take it in both her little ones, and they away together through the deserted streets, feeling as they were the onlv pair alive in the still white world tfiat looked so lovely in the early sunshine.
Tlie girl was surprised to find how short the way seemed for in spite of drifts, she got on bravely, with a strong arm to help and a friendly voico to en»urage her. Yet whon she reached the last corner she stopped, and said, with sudden shyness witicli he understood and liked:
I'd best go alone now. But I'm very grateful to you! Please tell me your name. I'd love to know who my friend is, though I shall never forget his kind ness." "Nor I yours! Dick Stone is my name. But I'd rather you called mo your tramp till we get something bet ter," he answered, with a laugh in his eyes, as ho bent toward her for a hearty nhake of the slender hand that had grown warm in his.
I will! Good-bye, good-bve!" And. suddenly remembering how they parted Itcfore, Letty blushed like a rose and ran away as fast as tho drifts would let her.
And I'll call you my I^etty some day, if I'm not much mistaken," Dick said to himself with a decided nod, as ho wont back to the foundry, feeling that the world looked more "sort of bridal" than ever. lie was not mistaken, for when spring budded his dream came true, and in the little sewing girl, who bound him with a silken thread so soft and strong it never broke, ho found an anchor that hold him fast to happiness and home To Letty something wonderful happened at last. The prince camo when most she needed him and, though even when the beggar's rags fell off his only ITOWII was tho old hat, his royal robes rod tlannel and fustian, his scepter a sledgo hammer, sho knew and loved him, for

llow awfully some geniuses do miss it in this worfd. Yesterday the writer went into a butter and egg house on Perry St., and down stairs and up stairs were piled four thousand egg cases, each case having a capacity for thirty do«en. "Do you seo the inventor's name —J- tevons asked our conductor. Sure enough, every case wss marked "Steven's patent." "Well, that man Stevens made ovfcr $100,(XX) out his patent in two or three years and the reckless way in whi*h he made money fly, appalled his old friends and made some of his new ones rich. Then it camo to it that he was obliged to sell out, and he disjiosed of his right at a pretty small figure. And now Stevens is working for his successors at |2 a day! 'lhe new firm is making piles of money." Such is tho story of the inventor, who mado eggs a commercial commodity, throughout the United States. Prosperity overthrew him.

GOLDEN WORDS.
Gilded tombs do worm* enfold. A laugh is worth a hundred groans in any market.
Wealth is not his that has it, but his that enjoy its. Money is like manure, of very little use -xcopt to be spread.
Faith Is tho pencil of the soul that pictures heavenly things. Ho that swells in prosperity will be sure to shrink in adversity.
The mind grows narrow iu proportion as the soul grows corrupt. Kind rod weaknesses induce friendship as often as kindred virtues.
Late repentance is seldom true, but true repentance is never too lato. Love's sweetest meanings are unspoken, the full heart knows no rhetoric of words.
Our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time wo fall.
II« who has not a good memory should never take upon himself the trade of lying.
If a man makes himself a worm, he must not complain when hois trodden upon.
At twenty years of agf the Will reigns at thirtj', the* wit and at forty, thejudgment.
Opinions-founded on prejudico are always sustained with tho greatest violence.
1
IIo who does evil that good may come pays atoll to the devil to let him into heaven.
Whole years of joy glido unperceived away, while sorrow counts tho minutes as they pass.
In this theater of man's life, it is reserved only for God and th© angels to be lookers on.
Tho chains or habit aro generally too small to bo lolt until they are too strong 'o be broken.
The plants look up to heaven, from whence they receive their nourishment. —[Shakspere.
A multitude of laws in a country is like a great number of physicians, a sign of weakness and malady.
Ii ever this free people, if this government itself, is ever utterly demoralized, it will come from this human wiggle and struggle for office—that is, a way to live without work.—[Lincoln.
A Quaker's advice to his son on his wedding day: "When thee wont a courting, I told the to keep thine eye# wide open now that thou art married, I tell tnee to keep them half shut."
Deserve friends and you will have them. Tho world is teeming with kind hearted people, and you have only to carry a kind, sympathetic heart in your own bosom to call ost goodness and friendship from others.
Fear small temptations rather than great ones. These come only now and then those every day. Beware of being witty at the expense of reverence sarcastic at the expense of charity entertainment at the expense of truth coarse at, the expense of purity.
It has been wisely said, "That well may thy guardian angel suffer thee to lose thy locks, if thou darest wilfully to lay thy head in the lap of temptation." Was it not easier for the hero of Juda to avoid the touch of the. fair Philistine than to elude her power when held in her arms?—[Jane Porter.
An intimate friend of Professor Agas siz once expressed his wonder that a man possessed of such abilities as his \gassiz) should remain contented with such a moderate income. "I have enough," was Agassiz' reply: "I have not time to make money life is not sufficiently long to onable a man to get rich and do his duty to his fellow men at the same time."
There is this difference between the two temporal blessings, health and money—money is the most envied, but tho least enjoyed health is the most enjoyed, but the least envied and this superiority of tbe latter is still more obvious when wo reflect that the poorest man would not part with health for money, but that the richest would gladpart with all his money for health.— [Colton.
Though all tho winds of doctrine were let loose to play upon the earth, su truth be in tho field, we do injuriously to misdoubt her strength. Let her and falsehood grapplo. Who ever knew truth to be put to the worse in a free and open encounter? Her confuting is the best and surest suppressing. She needs no policies nor stratagems, to mhke her victorious those are the shifts that error uses against her forever.—[Milton.
Tho best ivlfo is she who keeps her husband away from temptations. The best husband is he who lovihgly stands by his wife t« guard, cherish ana protect her. Tbe best parents are those who teach their offspring that in all tbe world is no such clear and life-lifting placo as home. When to this, those who are married doth agree, gsod angels come in to bless them, and tho happiness that kindles to heaven doth abide and grow in their hearts.
A STILL SUPPKR.
Tie caught a chair after a short face and sat down. "Whore have you lecn that's tho first question before they say they are going home to their father, but he had an answer that would have stunned any woman living:
It'n Presbyterian supper." W-h-a-t? Who did you go with Wioto boys." Boys! what boys Alio boys, Preshbytery Morrerrators a' all."
Here Mrs. W. bowed tbe frill of her nightcap and wept, and he explained, between convulsivejerksst his boots: "Sno use crying. Good company. Bet Morrerrator 'e oouldn'say Ten Cotnmandsments. Losh my money. Took 'nother drink. Whent my head! Six a-dog. Iaides all helmaheid." "O, Charles! Another woman held your held!" Sobs.
Now, Maria, don't he a fool. Who said nuzxer ooman heimabead?" Why, you said so yourself." Moro sobs,
Never. I'm a furrel liar. Tell you troth this time. S'eimpe Bob:" and doubtless he would if he hadn't gone dead to sleep while be was talking.

A TROdUXT KMTORAL.
A CLEROYMAN'S OPINION. What You Can (jet for FiveDol ws* lars.
HAHLES FKAX(1S ADAMS Says, in a letter to tbe Quincy (Mass.) Patriot, that three fourths of the books in brisk demand at the public libraries are "vapid and sensational." lie thinks that parents ought to guide tho children's taste in tbo choice of reading more than they do. The Newark Advertiser, in
A TKHM IIANT EDITOllIAI. On this subject says: "A worse literature than that whic is spread before the child ren of this country it would hardly be possible for tho mind of man to conceive or his hand to execute. It is oven worse thrn an open advocacy of vico and intemperance. for that would carry its own antidote while what we have excetes stimulates and debases the intellect, un fits it for healthy food, fills the imagina tion with gaudy and distorted pictures of life, and develops the passions at at age when they should bo most undercontrol How much of tho low moral toneofsoci etyisdueto these satanic issues of the press we do not know but as a river can nowhere be so effectually poisoned as at its source, so wo have aright tot. believe that the millions of these papers, devoured by curious and eager children nauSt iniluenco to a large extent the tone of thought and the drift and action of those whoso plastic minds come under their influence."
The writer adds: "It may be somewhat unnecessary to state that we have no re ference in the above to those monthly magazines lor children, which are as healthful as they are beautiful. If all editors were as able, trsthful and devoted as Mrs. Mary Mapes Dodge (who edits
ST.NICHOLAS),
there would be noth

A CLERGYMAN'S OFIXIOW Rev. C. S. Robinston, D. D., in an article in the Sunday School Times, on the subjeci says ot St. Nicholas, Soribner's Illustrated Magazine for Girls and Boys: "A cleaner, purer, more trustworthy periodical for children cannot be named. It is on the side of all that is true and good from beginning to end."
In order to place this magazine within the reach of all, the publishers offer the 14 numbeii (Nov., '7", to Dec., '70) for $3.00.
Or, for ?5.00, tbc^* will send 12 numbers, beginning with Nov. '75, and either or the bound volumes of St. Nicholas for '74 or '75, the full price which is §7.
