A b«e in the hand is woree'n two in the bush. The center of privity—the lowest button on a Quaker's vest.

Snorisg is now euphemistically term «d "praefllee in sheet music." When did Abraham sleep Ave in a ted When ho slept with his fore-fa-thers.

It has been sufcRMted by Figaro that the motto of a foundling asylum should be, "Thus far ahalt thou go, and no father."

Coffee and eggs fresh laid by Mary Jonos," is an eating house sign. The painter was not over careful about punc nation.

The editor who was told that his last articlo was as clear as mud. promptly replied: "Well, that covers the ground, anyhow."

Biddy being very sick was asked if who would take oil." "Indade," said she, "I would take anything to make me well, it it killed me."

A tombstone in a Colorado cemetery has the following touching epitaph He wax voting, ho was fair, lint the Injun* raised his hnlr.

Nothing is calculated to mako a young man moro deliberate than the spectacle of scventeon pairs of strined stockings hanging on the clothes line of a house where there is only one young lady in the family. .S'lven men in Texas lately agroed to draw lot,* to sao who was the laziest one but when tho last man was reached he refused to draw on the ground that he was "too lazy to reach out and make an ellbrl."

Kmytho was telling some friends about a wonderful parrot. Why," said ho, "that parrot cries 'stop thief!' so naturally that every time I hear it I always stop. Now, hang it, what are you all laughing about?"

A drunken man fell asleep on the roadside, where a pig louiul him and boiriui to liek him in the mouth. "Who is kissing me now?" said the drunkard. "What a capital thing it is to be jn favor with the women!"

To a bachelor whoso affections are without an anchor perhaps thero is nothing more aggravating than tho spectacle of a beautiful woman with her sleeves rolled up scratching her husband's back.—[Urooklyn Argus.

A few days since a man convicted of drunkenness stood up before his Honor at the police court. Ills Honor said, in his slow, solemn way, "I'll give you §10 or thirty days." "Well, I'll tako the $10, squire," said tho fellow.

This is tho kind ot weather when a man se?s his wifo coming into tho raoni with a scuttle of coal, and, after she has I mured overy bit of it into tho top of the tall stove, savs: "JIannor, you ought to havo aske^ me to do that. But it's too late now."

DOM tX I'l (ThCO NO Y. What is your trouble, madam?" inquired tho doctor.

It's thechildren. I'm a poor woman and I'vo got my live children to leed. They're so healtliv, doctor."

Ah, you are fortunate, then, for sickness in so largo a family would provo a sore impediment."

Yes, doctor, tKny'ro very healthy. Thcv eat like pigs. Never have enough." i)h, well, you are all right, then, so long ns yourself and your children keep well." "Yes, thov are well. Their appetites are too. There is no danger of their eating too nine!:, is there?"

No good, homely food, as much as their appetites crave, will not lyart them."

Well, I didn't know, 3'ou know. They eat so much, you see, that I thought I'd come and get something to kind o' check theiM up. Some little medicine, you 'know. These aro hard times, and |cople have to bo saving."

IK was an elderly man, but his wellpreserved countenance expanded in a genial smile that made him look ten vears younger as he said, "I neveral)ow myself to borrow trouble. Some people are always trying to effect that loan, but 1 am not of their sort." And again he smiled, diffusing light and cheerfulness over the group with whom he conversed. Homo tivc hundred miles away, the poor overworked sister of tho happy man was boarding, and striving to bring under control, his six worthless and troublesomo children, and at same time seeking to teach her own ill-clad, ill-fed and numerous progeny walk in the ways of righteousness. This was whv the elderly 'man with tliQ genial smfle spoke so cheerfully, and when his good sister's health finally departed from her anil she lav down and died, he still borrowed no trouble.

THE

Is being varied just now by a spurt of excitement- over the discovery of a frenchman who is turning his Masonic knowledge to profitable account. Ho gathered together a number of printers, preasmen, (iog-f*nclers, and others, and organized a .Nfanonlt lodge without observing the formality of applying to the »ratid liodgo for a charter. He has communicated to his pupils a number of the grips, signs, pass-words, etc., and charged them at the rate of $10 each. As his pupils numbered •oniewhere in the neighborhood of fifty or aixty, his protits wefe considerable, in comparison with the labor expended. Ho has been arrested, but threatens to expose the whole

WHAT THEY De AT CHURCH. It was after the evening service. Mrs. Coonton and the three Misses Coonton had arrived home. They sat listlessly around the nxmi with their things on. Mr. Coonton was lying on the lounge asleep. It bad been undoubtedly an impressive sermon as tho ladies were silent, busy with their thoughts. "Emineline," said Mrs. Cooaton. suddenly addressing her eldest, "did you see Mrs. Parker when sbe came in

Yes, ma," replied Emineline. She didn't have that hat on last Sun day, did she?"

No," said Emmelino, "it is her old hat. I noticed it the moment she came down the aisle, and says to Sarah, 'what on earth possesses Mrs. Parker to wear such a hat as that?' says I." "Such a great prancing feather on such a little hat looked awful ridiculous. I thought I should laugh right out when I saw it," observed Sarab.

I don't thin.c it looked any worse thau Mary Schuyler's, with that flaring red bow at the back," said Amelia.

I don't see what Airs. Schuyler can be thinking of to dress Mary out like that," said Airs. Coonton, with a sigh. "Mary must bo older thin Sarah, and yetslio dresses as if she was a mere child."

She's nearly a year older than I am," asserted Sarah. Did you see how tho widow Marshal was tucked out?" interrupted Emineline. "She was as gay as a peacock. Mercv, what airs that woman puts on. would like to have asked her when she's going to bring back than pan of Hour." And Emineline tittered maliciously.

She's shining around old McMasters they say," mentioned Amelia. Old McMasters!" ejaculated Mrs. Coonton. "Why, ho Isold enough to bo her father."

What difference do you suppose that make" to her?" suggested Kmmeline. 'She'd marry Methuselah. But I'd pity him if he gets her. She's a perfect wild gut." "Sav, Em., who was that gentleman with Ellen B.vxby?" inquired Amelia.

That's so!" chimed in Sarah, with spirit, "who was he?" What gentleman?" asked 3

ton

Mrs.Coon-

Why. I don't know who it was," explained Kmmeline. Thev camo in during prayer, lie was a tall fellow, with light hair and chin whiskers."

It couldn't havo been her cousin John, from Brooklyn," suggested Airs. Coonton.

Bothor, no," said Sarah, pettishly. 'He is short and has brown hair. This gentleman is a stranger hcra. I wonder where she picked him up?"

She seems to kepp mighty closo to "nim," said Amelia, "butshe needn't be scared. Nc one will tako him unless they are pretty hard pushed. He looks as soft us a squash. Did* 3*011 see him tumble up his hair with his fingers? I wonder what that big ring cost—two cents?" and the speaker tittered. 'Well. I'm glad If she's got company," said Mrs. Coonton, kindly.

She's made efforts enough to got some one, goodness knows." I should say she had," coincided Emmoline. "Khs's got one of them Victoria hats I see. If I hnd a drunken father, I'd keep in doors, I think, and not be parading ruvself in public."

Just then there was a movement on the lounge, and the ladies began to take off their tilings.

II?Uo, folks" said Mr. Coonton. rising up. and rubbing his eyes. "Is chnrch out?" "Yet." said Mrs. Coonton, with a yawn, which communicatcd itself to her (laughter.

Did you havo a good sermon Protty good," accompanied by another yawn all around.

Seo many good clothes?" was the next query. I sunposo von think, Air. Coonton, that ks all yourwife and daughters go to chin civ for, to look at people's clothes," said Mrs. Coonton, taitlv.

Tnat's just like pa," said Kmmeline, with a toss of her head. "He is always slurrivg church people."

Papa sloped to bed.

CONGENIALITY.

Girls, iii marrying, if you would ensure happiness, choose a congenial companion—one who is quick to catch your meaning—whose thoughts aro your own —who is "good company" always. If, though he be handsome, you grow a little tired of him in a few hours—if, though he be ablo, to offer you a fortune, you can't think of much to say to each other—if, after the conventional cooing and kissing, there is really nothing between you, and you do not want to chatter to bim, and be finds refuge in newspaper—it thero are no cosy times, and when you are not loveinaklng, thero is a sort of dead wall between you— mark my words—you will not be happy together. deal after a few years of marriage, ut blinds man and wife together more and more as the years go by. It is the real being in love—the happiost part of it, at least, and without it many a pair, who have not had a doubt oY themselves while the courtship was upon them, often wish themselves, if not dead, divorced—anything to escape the dreary hours which they are forced to spend togethor.

Ira merchant should have struck off 4,000 circulars in reference to his business snd he hsd In his possession the names of 4,000 people, would ho be most benefitted by sending one to each of the four thousand, or by sending one each day for four days to one thousand No merchant would hesitatean instniitover such a proposition He would say one circular sent to each of four thousand customers is worth four times as much as four of the same circulars sent to one thousand. The same rule holds good In newspaper advertising. The Saturday Evening Alail, going to four thoussnd families each week and being read largely uj«m Sunday when the husband and wife are together to talk over and plan the purchases for the coming week, is worth four times as much for advertising purposes as a paper having but a thousand cirrulaUen issued six times a week in the hurry snd bustle or business -and but few copies of which are carried home to fhmllies* The number of persona reached^ by an advertisement is what gives it value,

Cincinnati Commercial.-

We have in Washington a great Congress—a wonderful Congress. Not only do we have Old Virginia witli the Constitution, we have the American Eagle from the plains of Illinois. Hear Mr. Carter Harrison, from Chicago, on the Centennial appropriation: "The common eagle taking his flight from the extreme limit of Eastern civilization, in 1776, would have made it* flight to the western limit on a single day: but now the proudest monarch of the air, dipping himself in the Atlantic, and then looking at the setting sun, ever intent anil sailing onward, takes days and weeks before he cools his pinions in the sprays of the grand Pacific. And yet we are told that the people shall not be taxed at the rate of three and a half cents each for the celebration of the country's birthday."

LWashington Special to Commercial.] Indictments were found to-day against ex-Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Sawyer, ex-Deputy Commissioner of Customs liainer. and one Barstole, a clerk in the office of the Commissioner of Customs, Bracks (of Parkman & Bracks, of Memphis), and one other, whose name can not be had to-night, for having fraudulently procured the payment of false cotton claims during Kichardson's administration. It is in testimony that Senator Spencer, of Alabama, called almost dail^ at the treasury department while the claims were pending, to urge their payment, but it. does not appear that the evidence establishes his complicity so clearly as to warrant his indictment.

CINCINNATI,O.,Jan. 25.—The Gazette's Charleston, West Virginia, special says Thomas Hi lies and William Dooley had an altercation regarding Dooley's wife, and llines threatened to cut Dooley's ihront. To-night Hincs went to Dooley's shop, knockcd on the door, and when Dooley appeared, Ilines struck him with a knife at the lower part of the ear. severing the jugular. Dooley seized the instrument used for crimping boots, felled Ilines to the ground. Dooley died about an hour after. Hi.ies i8 in jail. .The cases of Dawson and listep, charged with the murder of Lee several days ago, was called in court at Charleston today. The prisoner's counsel consumed the day in arguing for a change of venue, JII account of the popular excitement against ih? prisoners in Charleston. The judge rtserved thi- decision until tomorrow. The court iiouse and yard was tilled with a.i.\:'«us people, the majority of whom are citizens of Campbell's Creek, where the murder was committed.

LATKR.—About 200 armed men arrived at 10 P. M., on steamer Judge Baker, apd proceetled to jail and took Damson and Estcp ont and marched them off to the woods, where they will probably be found hanging to a tree in. the morning. Dooley, who was killed by Hines, early this evening was a colored man. After the mob had carried off the Lee murderers, the colored citizens to the number of 50 went down to t!ie jail and demanded Hines, who was delivered to them, and they then followed the' former crowd to the woods with their prisoner, who will probably meet the same fate.

Pimples, Eruptions, Rough Skin. The system being put under the influence of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery for a few weeks, the skin becomes smooth, clear, sofl, and velvety, and being illuminated with the glow of perfect health from within, true beauty stands forth in all its glory. The effects of all medicines which operate upon the system through the medium of the blood are necessarily somewhat slow, no matter how good the remedy employed. While one to three bottles clear the skin of pimples, blotches, eruptions, yellow spots, comedones, or "grubs,'" a dozen may possibly be required to cure some ewes where the system is rotten with scrofulous or virulent blood poisons. The cure of all these diseases, however, from the common pimple to the worst scrofula is. with the use of this most potent ng*nt, only a in a leer of time. Sold by dealeN in medicines.
