In fact it is quite likely that wo shall need refreshments of this kind. Clipping coupons Is hard, tedious work.
TriK prisoners in the county jafl, fourteen in number, made a strike for liberty Christmas night but were repulsed by tho sheriff and deputies. Tho plan was to overpower the turnkey when he camo to lock them in their cells for the night, but that functionary being rather more obstinate and contrary than they had counted on they fulled to pass even the tirst door.

Tb® defendants tiled a general denial and claimed that the trade was In good faith. The transaction is a very common one, and is generally regarded as a swindle by persona outside the court#, but it teems that no oase liko it has ever before oome before the courts here. The 9330 recovered is just oae-balf the amount asked.

TERRE HAUTE SATURDAY EVENING MAIL
THB work-house In this city has now had a fair trial of nearly one month and sufficient experience in its workings baa been already gained to warrant the statement that It la and will be of great benefit to the city. The pen and shed, which by courtesy is called a work house, js a very cheaply constructed affair and was Intended moro as an experiment than anything else. A high and tight board fenoo enelcses a lot 55 by 00 feet in size. In tho center of thlB is a substantial shed, 32 by 60 foet, under which the men werk at breaking stone. The whole structure, including the necessary tools cost about $300. Here city prisoners who cannot pay, work out their fines at 75 cents per day, and all tramps who apply for food and lodging are given an opportunity to earn a lodging and two meals, by breaking Btono one-half a day. Since the placo was opened the tramps have averaged about four a day, and the prisoners about tho same. Occasionally ono of the former has stayed two or three days, preferring the work to the liopele«s task of hunting up another job, but geuerally they leave alter eating their dinners at noon and are seen no more. Formerly they were back frequently during the winter —sometimes two or three times in tho same week—but that does not occur now. Apparently they lenvo tho town disgusted, and for good.
In breaking stone, tho operator sits cn a seat formed of a couplo of big stones, one on top of the other, and uses a similar pile for a work bench. He uses a round hammer weighing between twelve and sixteen ounces and resembling, somewhat, a pound weight with a lian die through ii. Tho operation is something liko cracking walnuts but rather moro dangerous to tho fingers. The stone Is what is called "bastard lime stone," and is broken into pieces abeut the size of a hulled walnut. Half a yard ol this is an average days work, though good "hand" might easily break double this amount. Tho men generally are jolly and good humored alout it, working away very leisurely, singing, smoking, chatting, and cracking jokes with each other as they work, and apparently enjoying themselves highly. Their personal appearance, dress and other characteristics present a most curious and interesting study, and their sad histories, if known, would doubtless bo still more singular and striking.
But the most important point to bo considered about this work-house experiment is the relief it affords tho city. A year ago, at this time of tho year, the station houso was ovorrun with applicants for lodging and meals. The building was not half largo enough to accommodate even thuso who were actually in great need. Many of thom camo back night after night and stayod around tho city for weeks. It is not so now. Those who are unwilling or too lazy to work got out of town as quickly as possible and the news Js enrried to others that Terre Haute is a bad placo to go to. There will not certainly bo more than one-fourth ai many meals furnished this winter as lasf and those that are furnished will be paid for in labor. Tho city will in a measure be froo from the "tramp nuisance" and this in the face of tho fact that there are moro tramps afoot now than there wcro a year ago. In place of tho hordes of men who were formerly begging from door to door for food, housekeepers now have quiet. It is a relief which can only bo appreciated by remembering what we were compelled to suffer last year from the lack of just such a place as this workhouse.
CHRISTMAS was tho most beautiful, and yet tho most unseasonable clay of tbe winter thus far. Tho wcatlior was as warm and delightful as tko balmiest days of spring. All day tho sun shone brightly in a sky that was at times al most unclouded and with a warmth that mado tho shady side of tho street the popular on» for pedestrians. It was tbe "green Christmas" of tradition, tho culmination of a week of green days, the most extraordinary week with the exception of the prosent, that wo remember to have experienced in tho point of mild winter weather In Terre Haute. Bat the day was gorgeously beautiful and people seemed generally disposed to accept it cheerfully, without any croaking over tho premonition of plethoric church-yards that is conveyed to those disposed to put a sinister construction on it* character. Sunday morning seemed still more delightful and springlike, Ui« thermometer standing at 74J about noon there were regular

TUK smallpox "scare," it appears, is not over yet. In fact thero aro moro cases In the city now than at any time sinco the diseaso broke out. Still, with ordinary precaution, the danger of its spreading further is not great. Another case like that of tho German teacher, Tietz, is not likely to occur. All theclty physicians are watchful and active in marking tbe houses where it exists and are doing everything in their power to prevent it's spread. The important matter of vaccination should, however, be promptly attended to by every head of a family, and any negligence in this respect Is. under the existing circumstances, criminal. —Sincc the above was put in typo for tho first edition, we havo learned the following facts from Dr. Ezra Head, chairman of tho Board of Health:
Bernhardt Tietz, tho German school teacher, is reported to be convalescing. There havo been ton cases of smallpox in tho city. One death to the present tiine.
Tho pest house is exceedingly comfortable and admirably adapted to tho wants of tho inmates. Tho city authorties deserve great crodit foritspromjt construction. Two adults an*l ono infant are its present occupants, and are well cared for.
