CONSIDERAULE complaint has been made through the daily papers, this week, of Councilman Schloss, Chairman of tho Fire Committee, for his action in regard to the suspension of Georgo Yost froui duty and psy as a member of the fire department. These complaints are unjust to Mr. Schloss, who is a most actlvo and conscientious officer. George Yost was drunk the committee were notified and two members of the committee went to the engine house and found him in that condition. The whole committee met the following night and Yost had a hearing. In consideration of his having formerly been an efficient fireman, and of this bolng his first offence, Yost was let off with the two weeks suspension snd less of pay but with the wsrnlng that should he ever bo found guilty of drunkenness a second time, he would be summarfly discharged. "The action was unanimously concurred In by the whole committee, which consists of I'hlllp Schloss, J. M. Haley and Thomas Gist—two Republicans and one Democra^—and to charge that Yost got off easily because of party obligations, is simffly sbsurd.
—The Selden Irwin Combination Company play Damon and Pythias at tho Opera House on Thursday night, December 9th, and with the present indications the house will bo full from the bottom to the top, and character, plsy, and the party rendering the same such should lie tho case. The play of Damon aud Pythias Is one of the finest plays presented to the public, and tho Irwin Combination are considered the best troupe presenting tho same.
The test of friendship aa presented In the play is the strongest presented in any character play. It is this:
That a man, If needs be, would die for his friend. Such was the friendship shown by Phthiss for Damon, when he permitted himself to be placed In a loathsome dungean, ass hostage for Damon, that he, Damon, might soe his wife and child once mors before ha waa to be executed, such I wing bis doom. Don't fell to see the pl*£ you will never ro«ret tho time or money spent on that ccssion. Lodges Knights of Pythias are expected from the surrounding towns, and arrangements have been made to bring weh parties at reduoed rates, and It la expeeted that the Opera House will be crowded to its fullest extent. The schedule ef prices Is fcir and made to accommodate aU cotM^ tons of sockaty.

Everything Is being done that oaa be for making the plsy a soecea*. The ceespasy is making every effort to that end, and will, we have no doubt, make thle the grand success of theseaaoa.

HO LI DAY A TTRA CTJON& AT THE
CENTRAL.
To a person of cultivated 'and refined tastes there la not perhapq in this dty a more attractive place than Button A Hamllton'a "Central Bookstore." addition to the large stock of be which may always be found the books of poetry, fiction, history, science, —the cboioeet and the freshest of all oi them—one may feast his eyea on beautiful pictures snd other elegant works ol art for hours without either becoming wearied or exhausting the attractions. Their show cases alone would occupy one a day and then net satisfy his curiosity. Such sn establishment ss the
Central" Is of tyttold value to a town as a papular educator of the public taste. Among the new attractions recoived this week is handsome show case filled with samples of the finest work now being done by (be celebrated gold-pen manufacturers, Morton k. Co. iteme of these pens sod holders are marvels of artistic skill aod beauty, and would niftK6 (he most elegant Christmss present*. We notice that a new material called celluloid 14 being employed in these holders. resembles gutta percha somewhat, and la very handsome. Thore are aovoral colors of it, and it will doubtless beoome quite popular, aa it is said to be extremely durable, A new lot of "Psiwteries," also Jost received, attract tho eye by the neatness with which the boxes are put up. In facfc» these are tho finest goods of the kind we huvo ever seen, and can scarcely bo excelled in sny particular. A now thing, snd something which is destined to become very popular with the little folks, is beautiful assortment of the same goods, idontical in shape and material with the larger, but less than half the size. These aro put up especially for childreu and sell at twenty-five cents a box. Every good little boy or girl la the town should hsve one. A large invoice of Prang's chromos will be in next week and those who admire the best style of chromo work should call and see thom before the assortment is much broken. There are many other beautiful goods at the Central which it is not possible to mention in a brief notice like this, but readers will do well to make a call and see for themselves. And do not foel that you are intruding. Our word for it that Messrs. Button A Hamilton will bo glad to have you call and look, whether you buy or not. /,
