Th« speaker ha* sained a victory. Ills own vote wttft choked with teurt# It wan as though only under strong restraint he was» ablo to speak, and those who heard him, l«*s strong in neir-coo-trol, wept ovvr tho Under story. them with a benediction. By the subtle sympathy that exists between speaker and bearers, he knew that they were in bin power, and all sinners, converts, and Christiana recognized that the awakening had indeed oomc.

Tito singers, through the impulse of a battle gained, wing without bidding, "Hold the fort."

The music Is wild, triumphant, and exultant, it filled the tlr, drowning the sound of i-lmAling, retinug feet, and of moving chain*. The singers, the Christinr-, were brilliant and aggressive, and the rouciuered sinners Joined in tho pttan, but with heads 3 wed ana with wet cbcfc*. Stanza aiu.' stanxa, and chorus nftsr chorus, was rolled out, each one lou (r than before, as the throng poured trough the tjoors. Then other hvmns were sung. 'Earlier In the evening. Moody had twice shown his powers over hisaudidtioe. Once a man with Sangs larger and stronger than Sankey's, cried out, "Clary be to God," and the preacher, to the surprise of tho startled bouse, said cam* Btly, "I thank you, my friend, for that cry. It came from your heart. But you can betut mrvo tho Ixrd, and me his servant, if you will wait and say 'AtTien' when I ask you to."

Again a man only a lew feet from tho jipoaker feinted, and his fiends, atTrigbtel, gathered about him, and hundreds of persons sprang to their fo-t. "You are dismat ed, are you cried the speaker, almost tauntingly to tho crowd.

41

You are thrown into confusion and routed by the fainting of a man—bv a traneo that will resemble death for a low moments only What if that man bad been struck dead—dead with his sins upon him—dead without repentanee or confession? Then you might stand ghastly and terrilled. And bow many of yon, if death should come as suddenly as did that fulntlug tit, could rejoice over the «U1?"

Tho bold move of tho speaker gave him the control of tbo house. The swooned man was carried out quietly, but all eyes were riveted upon the raauber, not upon the helpless burdeu. )uring tne evening six others fainted in less conspicuous positions and wenborne out without the slightest disturbance being created—so quietly that only the police record told the number.

From the rink many hundreds crossed

over to loin the Voting Men's meeting in tho Reformed church, and Mr. Moody, with a corps of clergy, went to tho little chapel of the Methodist church, where they have nightly m«*t and prayed with tho anxinu*. But last night tho chapol WHS too small to hold the frightened peniteuts, and tho great doors of the church were thrown ojen, and soon more than four hundred qnfet, palefaced ufcm ami women tilled the pews. The evangelist stood before tbom, and a band of singers In the gallery soltly sang. There could be little of that close conference that had been usual in the inquiry-mooting, but little ol the praying of" preacher and convert side by sides, but thcr? were earnest prayers that would do for all, and tears wore shed by the oxhorter and his followers alike. .'

THE MISCHIEF MA h'ER. She is a representative of a class already well described In books and nowspapem: in poetry and in prose. She may have boon sung about but however appropriate the words of the song may have been, I am sure that to have written appropriate muido would have puxxled a Halle. Married women as wull a» men aro often great scandalmongers but their gossip is tinged with a coloring of mercy snd good will that theapirater seems't* lack entirely. The gossiping spinster has made untold trouble during tho three-score years of her life. 8b® lias sown discord in every direction. She baa destroyed tho bast of friendships and *ev«*r»«d the ties of the best and truest lows. She ha? set brothers and slstem at enmity, father against son, mother against daughter. Nho has sent good wives moaning from thrlr proper shelter to ntm out Into the dreary, mercilesw, barren wilderness of a world, and husbands mad and howling into the wnirlpool Of mental, moral and physical nil If she had been a ftirr, with a poisoned dagger In her hand, striking at the hearts of all she met, she could tu'wr have accomplished the evil ahed!y her friendliness and confidence inviting manner In your nresenee, and If* enmity'and eonfl-d«n«e-letraylng anions at your back. I dmibt if there! person in the whole wo«ld who by tkitu&mt favors and unremitting ki'udne«s could still the in* *nt now ofMr ^s with which she W 'uld deluge soei.»y his or her disadvantage. Kven tbo** who know her ways are pois .n^i lit a measure by her strictures and exaggerations and misrepresentationa. White she Uvea there can be no general unity in the nrtghborhood. Years after she is dead there will be wounds «be itas caused still unhealed. 1 queation whether the evil she csnsrw la known to herseR Borne time in bitterness of spirit she has stabbed an enemy In the dark, and blinded and emu ring In darkness, stabbing friend and r*\ Tills habit Has grown fixed and firm in her nature—unalterable.

A NEW PLAN FOR GETTING WORK. {Prom the Woodstock, Vt„ Standard.] There Is an association of young persons at Springfield, Vt., known a the Industrial Works, that furnishes all Its members wltfi constant work at thir wages, and a pleasant home at a small cost, which is meeting with success so marked as to attract the attention of all thinking people, the members of this association are all yonng people who are wilting to rtd themselves of all bad habits, work steadily, dross economically and aave a portion of their wages no others are taken.

All tbo men who join are required to furnbh a small amount of capital, and to save one-fourth of their wages, which must be Invested in the capital stock of the MMoeiation-. Women are not required to furnish any capital in the outset, but must save one-sixth of their wages and invest it in the business. Those who do not comply with the requirements of tbo association are expelled, and those who wish to leave can do so at anv time, and can withdraw their capital 'by giving six months' notice. The wages paid to eaeh member is tlxed by a lioard of directors, and. is proportioned to their skill and ability.

They have a largo dwelling or homo, where tho members live and enjoy many privileges and comforts not usually found IH families or boarding-house. All pay a moderate price for their board from their wages. 1 hey have two new factory buildings, ana a good water privilege and considerable machinery, and are engaged in tho manufacture of toy and house-ftirnlshing goods, for which they llnd a ready sale. Thev commencod business a year ago with five hands, and are now working fortylive.

A GLIMPSE AT HER GARTERS. But better, and above all, is that article of dress which, if my boyish lips had so much as pronounced, my grandmother would have thumped my head with her thimble—I think they call it garter. Well, this hitherto mysterious member of the wardrobe, of which the

great outside world had only a dreamy idea, now becomes an ostentatious ornnment of tine dressing. The delicate silk stocking is llniahoa out at the top in laces run into ruffles, and clasped with tho most elaborate garters—garters with gilt, gold, and silver buckles—garters which briug $o and $50 the pair. And instead of making your sweetheart a present of bracelets, or ol a pin, ring, or ... ...

The debt-paying process has been steadily going on littlo by little the load has been removed, until the burden is now becoming light and can l»e borne. She carries a new novel, whose loaves have never been half cut, and, for aught I know, thoy never will bo. And that she has a ball of cotton and a crochet-needle, a piece of canvas and zephyr to work some ono a pair of fine slippers, and you have an inventory of her ovidences of usefulness. The morhlng costume of white, blue-white, pearl-white, cream-white, or what not, gleams with shirrs and pufTs like a snow-drift, while the ribbons, and bows and drooping garland.-) of flowers are as bewitching as suminor beauty sat down in Siberia. She fells neglige into an easy-chair, and with the sauciest little toss of her skirts, the silk stocking comes to view, and, if she be an adept, you will almost catch a glimpse of that npper clasp of gold and eilvor. GETTING OA' WELL ENOUGH. (Rushville Kcpubltcan.] People are becoming tired of the eva.'teless talk about hard times and panics. Tho know that while it is true that much depression oxlsts in certain branches of business, that it results from over production and speculation nuir*1 than any other muse. Tho real wealth of a nation is taken from the ground tho crops and mines give forth that which constitutes wealth. Tho year has given the huHbandman an abundant harvest: here and there exceptions exist and the crops aro a failure, yet tho country never produced so lar«e a crop. Prices rule high for stock and grain. The published statements of banks show that individual deposits are

No matter what the exciting cauao may.be, the real cause of a largA proportion of all diseases is bad blood. Now. Dc. Pierce doc* not wish to place hi* Golden Medical Discovery in the catalogue of quack patent nostrum?, by recommending it to cure everv disease, nor does he 00 recommend it on the contrary, there are hundred* of diseases that he acknowledges it will not cure but what he does claim is this, that there is but one form of blood disease that it will not cure, and that disease is cancer. He does not recommend hid Discovery for that disease, vet he know* it to be the most searching blood-cleanser yet discovered, and that it will free the blood and syrttem of all other blood poison#, be they animal, vegetable, or mineral. The Golden Medical Discovery is warranted by him to cure the worst forms of Skin Disease#, as all forms of Blotches', Pimples, and Eruptions also all Glandular Swellings, and the worst form of Scrofulous ana Ulcerated Sores of the Neck, Legs, or other parts, and all Scrofulous Diseases of the liones, as White Swellings, Fever Sores,

*, W. GKOVE STATION,IOWA, I Dit. PIKHCE, Buffalo, N. Y.: ,j Dear Sir—My wife first became lame nine years ago. Swellings would appear and disappear on her hip, and she was gradually becoming reduced, and her whole system rotten with disease. In 1871, a swelling broke on her hip, discharging large quantities, and since that time there are several openings. Have had five doctors, at an expense of $125, who say nothing will do any good but a surgicnl opcrati6n.

July 17, 1873, he writes thus: My wife has certainly received a great benefit from the use of your Discovery, for she was notable to get off the bed. and was not expected to live a week when she commenced using it, a year ago. She has been doing most of her work for over six months. Has used twenty bottles, and still using it. Her recovery is considered as almost a miracle, and we attribute it all to the use of your valuable medicine. I can cheerfully recommend it as a bloodpurifier and Strength restorer.
