1IE WAS A BABY ONCE.

But Jfr Waxn't Any More, and He Carried Sates.

On a car the other evening there was verv quiet lot of pasaengera, and among them a man about sixty-five vears old, having four or Ave hand-saws undfer hi* arm—apparently a saw-filer. Opposite the old man sat a young woman with a babe in her arms, and presently abroad grin covered the ola fellow's face, and he nodded to the child and said:

I never loved anything as I love children! I can hawl'jy keep from biting his little ears!"

Fie waited a moment, and then said: How old fs that beautiful child, madam?*'

Eight months," she replied. Only eight months! why, I've serin children twenty-live years old who didn't know as ihueh as"that c-hi'd does! I had a child drowned in a bar'l once, and yon don't know, madam, how it floored mo!"

He looked around the far for a moment, and thon said, reading from the

'Change to the amount of 82 will be furnished by the driver.' Well, that's liberal enpugh. Ho hasn't offered nie any vet, but I suppose the old customers will be served first."

The driver countod notes, saw that he was one faro short, and he jingled the bell. "Are we near some station?" asked the old man, standing up and looking out. lie sat down after a while, looked around, and his evo falling upon the lady, he askod of the mother: '•Couldn't you let me hold him a little while? See nim look at me! I'll bet ten dollars he thinks I'm his father!"

Sho refused to trust the infant off her knee, and the old man's face grew sad, and he sighed as be said

Just think ol it—that innocent child has got to be buried in the ground, and be eaten up by worms, likfe the rest of us!"

He wiped his nose on one of the sawhandlcs, held his^hat in his hand, and his eye catching a sign on a grocery, be exclaimed: "'Sweet milk' for sale hero!' That makes mo think, madam—do you bHng that child up on the bottle

Her faco grew very red, and sho made no reply. The old fellow looked his saws over, one by one, laid them down, nnd walking to the front end of the car lie picked up a basket containing meat, unci asked:

Does any ono own this meat?" A woman made a motion to signify that it was her property, and he uncovered the basket and called out:

Pork chops and a small piece of voal! Peoplo who want to cat voal can gnaw away, but I don't want any! What are lork chops a pound, madam

She dia Hot answer, and the old man pi«ked up ids saws, and asked "Does any one here know the name of tho man who invented saws?"

There was no answer, and he pulled open the door and continued: Yes, I do love children. I was a child once mysolf, but I didn't have any fun."

As he stood on the platform, he wont on: It will bejnst like ine to fall down when I step off, but of course I can't stay on this car forever. Well, good-by, everybody, and pleasant dreams to you.

He stepped off the car, slipped, nnd fell fiat by the ditch, whilo his saws llew in every direction. As the car passed on, he was heard savinc:

They ought to have a machine to lift people off the cars."

THE TMA OINA TI VE SEX. Mr. T. W. Higginson believes in imagination, and that woman excel in that high province of mind. He says: "I rejoice that in women, at least, here, as in Germanv, the imaginative faculty still retains its hold. I remember that when Mr. Emerson was lecturing in Boston, many vears ago, an eminent lawyer declined going to hear him on the "ground that Mr. Kmerson was so hard to comprehend 'but,' ho added, •mv daughters understand him and they go."* The remark was generally quoted by tho lawyer's admires as good satire, aad by Mr" Kmerson's adioirora as good praise* l^t anv ono notice In our nigh school*, where boys and girls recite together, whinh sex cares the most for literature: and he wilt find that If literature is of anv value, tho prefer®**** nffords grounds on which the Intellect ol woman mnv W defended. Cotton Mather snvs'that Ait us supported his blasphemies by first converting five hundred virgins thereunto: and most of our poets have first won their way by enlisting nn admiring constituency of women. The imaginative disposition Is there, iu the feminine nature but if women hAve not criticised as profoundly and created as grandly, even in literature and art as n.on, it is owing to other causes, often expounded and forming a part of the general intellectual discouragement under which they have laboren. Woman has at hast (Ought her way into the world of fiction and now stands at it» head, both in quantity and quality of work but it is true, even here, that »she has fought her way through sneers and discouragement. It is a significant fact that the two greatest living niaslon» of fiction are women who have found it to their advantage to write uudor the names of inen—C«eorg« 1-1 iot and George.Hand."

IRISHMEN NOT THE ONLY "BULL" MAKERS. An Irishman, denying that Pat is a "bull" maker in excess of all other people, says: "It was a Scotch woman who said that the butcher of her town otly killed hall a beast at a time. It was a Dutchman who said that a pig had no marks on his ears except a short tail. It was a British magistrate wh®, being told by a vagabond that he was not married, responded, 'That's a good thing for your wife.' It was an English reporter who stated at a meeting of the Ethnological Society, that there were 'casts of the skull of an individual at different periods of adnlt life, to show the changes produced In ten years though Dean Swift certainly mentions two skulls preserved in Ireland, OHO of a person when he was a boy, and tho other of the same person when he grew to be a man. It was a Portuguese mayor who enumerated, among the marks by which the body ot' a drowned man might be identified when found, 'a marked impediment in his speech.' It v*as a Frenchman, who, eontently laying his head on a largo

was an American lecturer who solemnly said one evening, 'Parents, you may have children, or, if not, your daughters may have.' It was a German orator, who, warming with his subject, exclaimed, 'There is no man, woman or child in the honse who has arrived at the age of fifty years but what has felt tho truth thundering through their minds for centuries.'"

WHEN a girl crops her front hair and pulls it down over her forehead like a Mexican mustang, and then ties a piece of red velvot around her neck, who can wonder at tho number of pale-faced young men that throw away their arabitioH and pass sleepless nights in trying to raise down on their upper Hps?

A THREE year old younster saw a drunken fellow "tacking" through the street. "Mother," said he, "did God repi firmative. The little tellow reflected for a moment and then exclaimed, "I wouldn't have done it."

A YODNQ Tennessee lady died recently at the weight of 450 j»ounds. Everybody who attended the f.ineral was weighed down with grief, and the pall-bearers felt as though they could scarcely stagger through it ana live.

NO EXCUSE FOR BEING SICK. No person can .use Hoschee's German Syrup without getting immediate relief and cure. We have the first case of Coughs, Colds or Consumption, or any disease of the Throat and Lungs, yet to hear from that has not been cured. We have distributed every ye»r for three years over 250,000 sample bottles by Druggists in all parts of tho United States. No other Manufacturer of Medicine over gave their preparations such a test as this. Go to your Druggist and not a bottle for 75 cents and try it—two

Gentlemen—A month or bo ago I was in Spriagfield visiting a friend, and noticing the wonderful success she had in baking, led me to inquire into her mode of baking. She seemed to think one reason she succeed od so well was because she used your Champion Baking Powder, and in addition to this, she "lauded it so highly that since I came home 1 have been trying to persuade one of our grocery men to send and get some, but as yet have not succeeded. Please send one pound to my address, and if you have any Receipt Books oblige me by enclosing one oi them as I want to follow your directions closely when baking. R«*pectfuHy, i1 1 its.
