A N ILLINOIS MIR A CLE.

Avon, III., sends tidings that the days of miraclos are still in the land, and cites an instance which the Lowistown Democrat snys "quite rivals the works done by Christ ISOO years ago." The story goes that a lady of Avon had been ill for some time, and llnally her case had been pronounced hopeless, and she was told that but a fow more hoars of life remained to her. The physician called at noon and pronounced her dying. She continued to gradually tiuk until about 0 o'clock that evening, when, feeling hor last hour at hand, she bado her family and friends farowell and requested her brother, a minister, to pray for her. All present kneeled, while an oirnest petition in behalf of tn© dying woman was made. During the prayor tho minister felt a hand upon his shoulder, and looking up 1 chela his sistor sitting up in bed, her face beaming with rapture. She told hifti he need pray no longor, as she was cured, soul and body, and then arose from the bed, praying (»od moved around among her friends: went to tho tablo and ate supper with them, and remained up till late in tho night, telling what God had done for her. The physician coming in, was informed by he"r of her instantaneous cure, and, after a careful examination of hor vital organs, pronounced the cure complote. No relapse has taken placo, and tho lady is said to bo now enjoying tho best of health. Tho Rev. Mr. Wood, a Methodist minister, and brother ofthe lady ^o miraculously restored, furnished the Democrat with the abovo particulars and vouches for their correctness.

IKroiu tho Dubuquo Telegraph.) In a recent issue of the Tolegraph appeared an account of the visit of a ghost, who requested that his mothor pay his debts. Since then tho truth of tins ghost story has leaked out. A certain shrewd individual of this city held an "I. O. U." given by tho young man who was drowned. The creditor is a close collector and never relinquishes tho hopo of

Tho programme was carried out to tho letter, and tho result was that in a few days tho mother •of the deooasod young man called upon the wily creditor and paid tho bill.

SLEEPING TOGETHER,

More npiarrols occur between brothers, between sisters, between hired girls, between servant girls, between olerks in stores, between apprentices in mechanics' shops, between hired men, between husbands and wives, owing to electrical changes through which their nervous systems go by lodging together night after night under tho same bedclothes than by almost any other disturbing us®. "There is nothing that will so disarrange the nervous system of a person who is eliuiinative in nervous force as to be all niuht in tied with another person who la absorptive in nervous force. Tho absorber will go to sleep and rest all night, while the eliminator will be turn bllng and tossing, restless and nervon*, and wake up In the morning fretful, peevish, fault-finding, and discouraged. No two person, no mattter who thev are, shoa'a habitually steep together. One will thrive and the other will lose. This tbo law, and in married lire it is defined almost universally.

ARRESTED FOR NOTHING*-

A Qtiecr Wager.

1

The following curious anecdote appears in tho European press: Dukeue (Jramont-Ca^ierousse, who died at the age of 32, once made a wager that he could get himself arrested in Paris within an hour without doing anything to merit it. Tho bet was taken, fifty louis. Caderousse jumped into a cab, drove to the temple, ana soon returned, in a sordid costume a tattered cap on his head, trowsers in rags, hobnailed boots, torn, muddy, down-at-heels. He rubbed his face and hands over with dirt, and then begged some one to follow him. Thus prepared, he entered a cafe on the Boulevard Poissonuiere, seated himself at a table, and called out: "Waiter! a bottle of champagne 1" The man hesitated an instant, and then said in an undertone: "That costs 12 francs." "Woll!" replied do Gramont, "I have money to pav with!" And he drew from his pocket forty bank notes of 1,000 francs each, which he laid on the table. The master of the establishment sent at once for some sergents-de-ville, and in a few minutes the pretended vagabond was saying to the Commissary of Police: "I am the Duke de Gramont Caderousse. I had laid a wager that I should bo arrested without having done anything to deserve it. 1 have won,and I have now only to thank you."

A SINGULAR case of vindictive cruelty is recorded in Illinois. Near Canton, in that Stato, lives a wealthy farmer named Coleman, who Is noted for his morose and revengeful temper. About ten years ago one of his oolts offended him very seriously, and he determined on a singular revenge, namely: imprison ment for life. Accordingly the farmer built a small pen, about ten by twelve feet, thatched it with straw, and thrust the colt into it. The animal was fed regularly and sufficieutlv, but never left that pen. Through want of exercise his frame became tlistorted, his legs thin and crooked, while tho poor brute's skin hung loosely on his shriveled body. His front hoofe grew to the length of eighteen inches, turning upward, while nis hind hoofs wore away nearly to the-ftrst Joint. And thus this unoffending dumb brute was kept in close confinement by his inhuman master for the space of ten years, until death recently put an end to Its sufferings. Tho case was brought to the attention of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Coleman has been arrested, and it is to be hoped will bo punished for his cruelty.

CONSUMPTION.

No disease that man is subject'to is more cortain of its subject than this, unless its course is arrested early. And to do this effectively in the beginning is to take DR. HEROICS' PULMONIC LIFE BALSAM, follow his directions closely, as you find them in tho

Books,

We are constantly receiving letters praising Hedges' Champion Baking Powder: W. N. HEDGES & Co.,

Gentlemen—A month or so ago I was in Springfield visiting a friend, and no* tielug the wonderful success she had in baking, led me to inquire into her mode of baking. She seemed to think sne reason she succeeded so well was because she used your Champion Baking Powder, and in addition to this, she landed it so highly that since I came home I have been trying to persuade one of oar grocery men to send and get some, but as yet have not succeeded. Please send one ponnd to my address, and if you have any Receipt Books oblige me by enclosing one of them as I want to follow your directions closely when baking Respectfully,
