AT the last meeting of the Council, Mr. Hager wanted to know whether the police were enforcing the liquor license ordinance—the Mayor replied that the police were performing their duty— Councilman Smith thought they wore much more strict with those having license than those without, and the polioe board was authorized to employ one secret polioeman at their pleasure to look after those not complying with the law.
TIIK sidewalks this week have been in a most beautiful condition. Just as smooth as glass. No difficulty experienced in falling down. It is true that the tall may be sudden, but, nevertheless, the fall is inevitable, and you arlso to fall again. You must not get mad at tho snicker of tho passer-by because he sees you fall. Watch him or her and you may witness his or her downfall. People drop like bowling-pins, with no one to "set 'em up again." The ladie* fall easier than the men. Thoir apparel gives elasticity to tho "drop." A man and a woman went down togetlior the other evening. The man said "I—n it!" Tho woman said: "Thank you, sir." It was her sentiment, but sho hesitated to use the exclamation which slipped so easily from the mftti's lips.
THE intense cold this week did not keep within doors all those who "adorn the home and make glad the heart of man," for on each day there were many ladies on the street, either" "shopping or "calling," and the bright glow which the keen air gave their cheeks as they tripped lightly alsng, reminded us of tho manner in which tho poets celebrated tho Goddess of Health. Those ancient poets knew no such thing as health, or graco, or beauty, or bliss, as the attendant of inertia, Indolence and seclusion out-door exercise was deemed essential, and was enforced. It formod a leading part of education, and association with Nature was thought all-important to the heroic life. The sun, pure air, plenty of out-door exercise, gives symmetry of form, beauty aud joy, but at the present day there are comparatively fow who appreciate either to that extent so necessary to the requisites enumerated. Let all in the city who havo daughters, get them out into the cool, bracing air, where they will find it necessary to movo rapidly to keep up such a circulation of blood as will "keep out the cold," nnd our word for it, doctors' bills will be reduced, aqd the homo circle bo doubly pleasant, as the result of a ireo use of Nature's invigorators—pure air and exercise.

Amateur singers and performers of this city are preparing a varied and excellent programme of music. The tickets will be sold at reasonable rates. Tho order of names and parts will be published in a few days.
M. ENNER CI I OR MASQ UERADE. Tho members of tho Mrcnnerchor are inak ng arrangements on the most extensive scalo for tlieir Annual Masquerade, which will oocur at Dowling Hull on the evening of the i'tli of February. A huge Mardl Gras procession will parade tho streets on the afterhoon of that day. It is the intention to make this aa occasion surpassing in interest and brillianca any former oflbrt—and tiiat is saying enough—in fact, it is saying a great deal. Hugo Duonweg was dispatched to St. Louis, this week, to search out some unique masks and to look up interesting features.
In order that all may have opportunity to look upon the gay and motley assemblage, whether they partlcipabe in tho dance or not, a low price of ad mistion has been fixed—$1,50 for gentlemen, and 50 eents for ladies.
