The general thaw in evcry body'a heart toward everybody will continue at least over Sunday. A feeling of general satisfaction with themselves premils among those who have been on the anxious seat for along time, and the disposition to forgive and forget is paramount. Christ man, in short, smooths out our ruffled dislikes and nerves like a hot iron does a piece of linen, and we are all the better for the smoothing.

To-xoaxow will be the last Sabbath before New Year's day. We suggest that our city clergymen tsKe occasion to say a word to their congregations tn £ivor of temperste celebration of the dsy. It should not be forgotten that the intemperanoe which so often characterises the the obeervsnceof these annual festivities differs from the festivitiea of other days and other seasons in the Ifcct that it originatee, not in the bar-rooms and srloons of the streets, but in the elegant residences of the rich, and the sumptuous parlors of the refined. Although we were happy to note on last New Year's that many banished wines and liquors from the side-board, yet the bar-tenders on these occasion* are too often the ladies of our most fwhionable houses. It is idle to say that the tingle glass offered by each lady to each caller can produce no bad effect, when it is well known that the offer is likely to be repeated many times during the day, with equal reason for acceptance in each case, backed, unfortunately, by a constantly growing inclination. Better abolish all observance of the day than keep it up as a means of askering in the New Year with a drank. Temperance lectures from tlie pulpit srr not uncommon, but to-mor-row th can be of great practical value, and we trust they will be numerous and
