TKS death of two sisters, Miss Maggie Fnuder on Sunday evening and Mrs. Robert Haney on Tuesday morning, less than forty-eight hours apart has thrown a pall of gleom over a large dr» de of flriends, who feel the tenderest sympathy for the widowed mother cast down under this terrible double affliction.

THB result of the election in this county promises to be very close—so dose that probably candidates on both ifckets will be elected.

The best informed politicians express the opinion that the State election will go Democratic, with a Republican majority in the Legislature.

Gen. Hunter will undoubtedly be reelected to Congress by a large majority. R. S. TKWfAST, in a brief and manly card, has, to ail fair-minded persons, explained the charge made by the Gaaette of having "for a money consideration nollled cases in the Criminal Court." The manner in which the Gazette has followed up the charge, shows such malice as to result more to Mr. Tennant's benefit than iitfury. Mr. T. has made tbe best Criminal Prosecutor the countv has ever had, has fought many difficult successfully, single-handed and and it will be a great mistake if he is not retained in Us place.

OBITVAMY.

MmMargarciW. Wiliiaaamtfae wllb of Mr. M.W. Williams, died at their residence, on south pM&iiiwt, last W®dthe 7th insi. The axuMmnee* of her death, whlehoceurredaboot rix o'clock r, *, 'jpm sev«*e st and cast a deep gloom over the hearts of auunusally large drole of relatives sod frtaada. Mra. Williams was born In Baltimore, Md., and lemovod to this cit^r wttlt the flunily of her Ihther, Mr John Wood, at a very eatty day. Her mother, Mrs. Charlotte Wood, Is still living, at B«a*ly ninety years of age. Her brothers, Mr. Ouurlea Wood, who died a fow years sine*, Dr. John Wood, and Dr. Maxwell Ward, of the U. a Xavy, sad her sisters, Mrs. P. M. Don nelly, Mrs, N. Preston, Mrs. Dr. Cunningham, and Mrs. Hammil, of 8n Hivan, are all well known in this city. She was the youngest of nine children and at the time of her death wss forty-five years of age, and had bona married twenty-two yean. Though ii was generally known to the friendsof Mia. Williams that, despite the appearance of health which ahe bore, ahe had been Ibr yeasvatttgeet to sudden and very severe attacks of H.l»wa, and thai, during the past summer, she had suffered more than usual, yet but Ibw of them knew of her last atkick until they heard of her death, Bvan thoae about her, while they knew that she was very ill, snd gave her unusual attention, did not feel that there was any special occasion for alarm. On Wednesday she seemed better, and her friends comforted themselves with the feeling that the wont over, and it was not until she was past consciousness, an hour or two before the end of life, that they suspected the approach of death. It need hardly be said that all that the best of medical skill, and the most assiduous nursing could do was done, but without avail.

The character of Mm, Williams was one of unusual beauty. Cheerfulness of disposition and great kindness of heart, made her one of the pleasantest of companions in the social and domestic circles, and won for her universal affection. She was greatly beloved by all who knew her. And in reference to her domestic relations, It may in truth be said that a husband never mourned the loss of abetter wife, or a son the loss of a more affectionate, wise and faithful mother. Few in their afflictions have such deep and hearty sympathy, or the sympathy of so large a portion of this community, as Mr. Williams and his son.

Mrs. Williams was a fldthftil and efficient member of the Congregational Church, and leaves for her friends all the consolations attending tho death of the christian. The funeral services were held at the house yesterday afternoon, and were attended by a very large number of citizens, the prooessiion being the largest witnessed in this city for years, and probably the largest that ever, in the history of the city, followed the remains of a woman to the cemetery.

THE EN-

NEW EDUCATIONAL TERPRISE.

The daily papers of the city have recently published tho articles of Association ef the Industrial School, which Mr Channcey Rose proposes to establish in thfa jty. We have delayed making any comments upon the matter, hoping to be able to get more definite information concerning the project. But we are able to learn nothing more than the facts indicated in what has already appeared in the papers. From this we learn that the incipient steps have been taken towards founding in this city a school in which the various sciences shall be taught in their relation to practical life, the various trades and ordinary puxsuite of labor. Mr. Rose, true to the principles which control him in all his public benefactions, and in many of private enterprises, seeks by tho Institution which be proposes to establish, to benefit the masse* of the people. The rich can take care of themselves, and he proposes to devote a portion of his wealth to endowing an Institution In which the children of the laboring classes may fit themselves, not for the' proiesskms, which are already overcrowded, but for an honorable and useftil place In society as skilled workmen. We noed hardly add that In tills he manifesto the practical good mam which has been a marked characteristic in his 111b. In this proposed bansikction, he lays our dty and the State, under new and lasting obligations. What we have said Is In no way official, but to gathered en ttrely from what has already been published. Confident that Mr. Rose and the Trustees will make known further frets as rapidly as they may deem it wise to do so, we have not thought It fit to apply tks interviewing "bore."

The Concert and (Jentenia! Tea Psrty, which has bees announced (or Tharaday evening, October 16th, promises to be a magnificent affair, and will no dosbt abound with fun aad pleasure. A Grand Concert of Vocal aed Instrumental Mnaie hss already hsen programmed, la which a large portion of the best musical talent of oar city will appear. Prof. E. C. Kiiboume has klodly don* seated to tafes charts, sad will direct the musical part of Uis entertainment. The ladies will bs prepared to receive their frieods sfter the Concert, snd s«stertain them with an elegant Sapper, or old fashioned Centennial Ten Party* They will b* attired In the costumes of a hundred y«s«s ago, aad will try, so far ss possible, to look just as bewitching and beautiful as their great-grandmothers were in their girlhood dsys. The concert will bs ovsr sbeut nins o'clock, which will give ample time lor Supper and a good, eocial, time.
