WASHINGTON LETTER. Correspondence of The MatL) Wmbdwrw, Say*. A
From Una prominence given to tta Woman's temperance movement by the pram ef Terre Haute la reasonably inferred that the Christian women of th» Prairieettylup deeply tnterestedhs the anti-liquor warfare. Tb® winter «»u»palgn promises to be eanwatf and fpakpi in many parte ot the land. Probably tbere la uo other city on the continent where aneh philanthropic effort is more needed than in Washington. And the very place where the crusade of toil year should haw be*ua-end where it ahould be Inaugurated aasoonasCongnai meets—-is the Capitol Building, In each end of which—that la, in both the Senate and House wings—Intoxicating drinks, such aa whisky and ale, were regularly kept tor salo ftiffl treelysbld during the laafc and many previooases* stona. I hokHt to be a burning shsme and a foul reproach on the government and people or these United State* that any pert of the edifice devoted to the use of the highest legisiesl*» body, as welles to the fcupreiae Court, ehould be
at to ao vile puyxxw aa that which I indicated. Doubtless there are many Senators and member* who do uot even suspect that the National Capitol ia thus defiled. Having no use for intoxicating drinks, they naturally are not likely to aed theftt. I aSB glad to, bear teeUmoay to Ut* rigid teaiperanoe habita of nearly the entire Indiana delegation. Senators Morten and Pratt, and oar model member, General Hunter, use no liqtior of any kind, setting in this, aa in other reapecta, an example worthy of, the positions they occupy. ft«s fwtaplay'i Btpraa#.
Yesterday moroing the community was startled by the report that another human seal was iauaehed iato eteraitr by the use of poison, aad when traced to its source it waa discovered that Mr. Edwin U. Wei lac®, a well-to-do mechanic redding on the west ride of sorth Fourth atreet, second door eonth of Ea-
K*
i, was lying in the agon!«s of death, citeuoaatancee seem to be substantially aa follows: Mr. Wallace, who is aboat forty two years of age, and a carpenter by trade, had not bean quite well aince laat Monday, bat as baa asea his habitual cuitom, he took sock remedies ss seemed suitable to his eooditioa, without cqnfioiting a phyricisa. On Moadsy night he waa anite aide, and vomiting all night, nearly, but grew better and waa about again next day and on Wednesday evening he ate a moderate supper and rat up aome time reading and retired as usual aave that be occupied a bed in a email room adjoining the family sitting room where hia wife and little daughter slept, aa he baa done for a few nights past it waa quite close, however, and were the partition away thev amid hare claaped hands with each other.
During the night, Mrs. Wallace think* about one o'clock, he got up and took aomethiag out of bis trunk, snd It is thought swallowed it, Hhe asked htm if he felt any better. Heaaid he did. She requested nim to come and He down with them, and he said "Oh ao, it will disturb yon and sis."
They talked together a few moments longer. Then she fell asleep sod never awoke until perhaps seven o'clock, when, on going to his aide, she found him apparently (lying, entirely unconscious, from a congestive chill, aashe thought. Her cries aoon brougnl friendly neighbots, and Dr. Link, the fsmily physician, was sent for, but was unable to attend. Ir. Willirn was then«%ecured, whe arrived soon sfter 8 o'clock, but the indications seemed to prove the presence of aome deadly narcotic: and accordingly all the approved remedies were used, Drs. Long and Mitchell being preeent. Reaction in part was induced, but thesesl of death was upon him, and the only resuitwas to prove to the phyaicisns thsl their diagnosis of the case waa correct, and. to prolong hia life a few hours, and he died st 4:15 p. M., laving remained unconscious all the while. It sppears that the deceased had been in the habit at times of using opium to relieve pain, although probaoly not an habitual user of the drug, and the probability, is he took an overdose of it, and thus, in the lone hours of the night, drifted out beyond the reach of succor, and withoot a warning, and with no farewell message upon his lips to the loved wife of his bosom, he went away forever.
As Mr. Wallace was in good circumstances, owning good property beside his comfortable residence, having no Indebtedness and being at peace with all hia neighbors, the theory of self-destruc-tion is disbelieved by all his relations and friends. Yet no sign is left, and the wherefore must be Only surmised.
