a good enongh botcher, but )p poor man. Adam kwrned the butcher baslneaa himself, aajd when quite young man he parked up hi^t butcher's knUb and cleaver, and started west! Ilia money only lasted to Pittslrarg, so he vMted the variola sftamboats bound below to ascertain which one would conriderllaeonpMy tuffideat compensation for his passage to Cksdnaatt. He found a captain who made a contract of thai kind, merely stipaiating that he afaouid work fifteen or twenty hours each day as a deck hand, to exdte appetite and promote digestion. While sistlng in loading the boat, he showed so modi talent in handling boxea, and exhibited such umuietaksUle genius in rolling bales, that one of the passenger* exclaimed, "That boy will rnak# hia mark," and called the lad aside. Placing his band upon the boy's shoulder, he advised him to make honesty his guiding star, and frugality his motto through 1Mb. "That man,** says Adam's biographer, "was America's greatest statesman, Henry (lay I"
Clay aeettts to have been standing around a good deal 1«» those daya, just to single ont boya who would make their mark in the world, for we have heard and read of at least a dosen similar Instances. But Forepaugh has made his mark, with every one of his four paws. Adam tarried in QndnjaaU a abort time, and then he went to Louiavilla, which was one of the weakest acta of his life. Had he remained in Cincinnati he might have been butchering yet. He got into the busiueaf of buying and selling cattle, and accumulated some man ey, with which he bought a menagerie, being led to this ad by observing how peculiarly fitted his name was to the business—4 Paws. He made no farther pause until he owned one of the biggest shows traveling, and his success shows how a butcher, if he be nothing more than a "candy butcher/* may, by heed ing the words of advice addressed to him by any stray statesman he chances to encounter, and sticking closely to the center pole, amass wealth and aurronnd himself with some of the most intelligent and cultivated wild animals ever presented to the publio under sixteen, mammoth tents.

A Terrible Accident
occurred last
Monday In the yard of the C. & T. H. R, R., by which Tilghman Stewart, an ex cellont and much esteemed young man lost his life. The train men were mak ing a "running switch"—that is throwing the ears upon aside track while the engine went ahead. Young Stewart drew the bolt, and as the cars separated foil to the ground, and a heavy loaded car passed over both legs, injuring him so badly that he never rallied, and death came in five hours. It is a strange coincidence that his brother was killed near Indianapolis, one year ago, in the same way. The widowed mother, the relatives and the young lady whom he was soon to wed, nave the heartfelt sympathy of a large drcie of friends.
