THE Democratic Congressional Convention and the picnic of the colored people made an unusual stir upon the streets on Thursday. The two gatherings were distinct and neither party mingled with the other.
THE Journal heard a rumor last evening to the effect that the managers of the St. Louis, Vandalia, Terre Haute 6 Indianapolis Railroad Company, following the example of the Indianapolis, Bloomington fe Western Company, would discharge all their passenger conductors, except one who has been but a short time on the eastern division.

TERRE HAUTE SATURDAY EVENING MAII
THE GREAT MIPPODBOMJS. Aa will be seen by oar advertising eol nrnm, Backley A CVa Great Hippo^ drome will exhibit in this dty naxt urday, theft ret day of August. The Muscatine, Iowa, Tribune of the 1th lost, has the following notice of thia immanae combination:
It was a happy conceit to combine in one show the revival of the Romao races, the holiday games of Old Roman, ant the wild Mparts and tragic deeds of the American Indians. All this has been fully realized In Buckley A Go's Great Hipiiodrome, exhibiting yesterday in our dty.
The grand eutree In the morning Is pronounced to have been the finest spectacular display ever seen in our streets. Itie beautiful races, the novelty of the chariots, the barbaric procession of the Indians, the Asiatic contribution of camels, elephants, etc., and three excel' lent bands of music, one white, one of Indians, and the other of negroes, altogether made a scene which could only be equaled and scarcely surpassed by the imagination.
At the prospect of such a show appear ing in our city we do not wonder our school board gave the children a holiday, nor are we surprised to learn that when the strange procession was heralded bv the music at Court Square, the whole court, lawyers, jury, and all "broke" for out-doors to view tho won derful sight.
The two exhibitions, afternoon and evening were attended by crowds of people. It was a grand relief to our
Eare
leasure seekers to be snared the threadscenes of a circus. The Hippodrome is a great hit. How wearisome had become tho stale jests of the clown, and the every repeated (bats of the gymnasts and riders. Tho Hippodrome gave us ltlrely new and startl: One wondered, when the bell rang, what strange scene was to follow. The most singular and fascinating sights came in swift succession. Nothing could equal the exdtement tho incident to the races of the ladv charioteers, and the hurdle races, Indian danoes and games, sack races, feats of the contortionists, elephant umbling, completed a perfect entertaln-
and foot races, and the ground lg, completed a perfect enteit
ment. TLe Menagerie attached to the Hippodrome is the best that lias visited our citv for years.
