OUR cttiaem will do well to watch those fellows who call at their residences for something to eat. They all have about the saute talc—that "they have been traveling, and are out of money." There are too many burglaries being committed, and it is well enough to give such fellows a wide berth.

Vkahkus COLLBOE did a commendable thing last week in conferring upon Mr. Sthnson the degree of Doctor of Divinity. Few degrees were ever better earned or deserved than this. Mr. S. has

energy in the cause of his Master. Last year, his labors In the pulpit having told upon his health, be wss transferred to another field, which has not only proved congenial to him, but profitable for the cause he is laboring to promote. Ho is State agent for the Baptist Foreign Missionary Society. Hiis furnishes him a wide and fertile field, and we learn that he is gathering a good harvest. It rives us pleasure to note the fact of a deserving cithsen being tbus appreciated and honored.—[Journal.

TERRE HAUTE SATURDAY EVENING MAIL.

On iliiBiiturday afternoon and evening the Fanny B. Price Dramatic Company will give two performances at the Opera Houae. The eompany arrived from Chicago on Thursday, and rehearsals are In progress tor two MtJa&ctoiy dramatic entertainments. This aft noon the bill consists of the comedy of "Our Country Cousin" and the tarce of mtw Nobba," and to-night will be given the thrilling drama of "Wedded, yet no Wife." We are authorised tossy that the evening performance will not commence until after the Are-works.

The Abdallah Troupe of Bedouin Arabs, fourteen in number, frem Jerusalem, together with Frary A Steele's European Sensational Novelty OongTMs, will give one performance at the Opera House on Monday evening. This is claimed to be the largest, most complete and expensive combination traveling. Among the attractions are Alex Davis, premier ventriloquist of the world Frsry and Steele, English DueUists Marsh Adams, Ethiopian Comedian and Original Old Black Joe John Weare, lion banjolst and Cooper and Fields, tho best double song and clog dancers In the profession. Seats can be secured at Button A Hamilton's,

SAM MCDONALD la going through the Baltimore Criminal Court with astonishing celerity. It will be remembered that the crime for which he is charged, the killing of Amos, was committed at one o'clock on Wednesday morning of last week. Before eleven o'clock the Grand Jury had found a presentment, and ou a bench warrant the accused was sent to Jail. On Thursday the Indictment was returned—McDonald was arraigned on Fridaj', and the State Attorney announced his readiness to proceed with the trial on last Monday or Tuesday. On account, however, of other engagements of McDonald's counsel and the absence of his mother in Europe, the case was continued until the October term. From tho published testimony, it does not seem possible for the accused, if he has a fidr trial, to escape life Imprisonment, if he does the extreme penalty.

THK State Normal School held its commencement exercises in Dowling Hall on Tuesday last. There were good number In attendance, and tho ex ereises were of an exceedingly interesting character. Every thing was practical and strictly professional, bearing directly upon the subject of teaching. "Fuss and feathers" were entirely want ing, as usual in this institution. In the papers which were read the writers began at the beginning—without any skirmishing,—and stopped when they were through, a merit rarely found. A class of twelve graduated, receiving certificates entitling them to teach wherever in the State they can find employment. And as to finding employment, there is no difficulty, there being a half dozen applicants for every graduate. At the beginning of the coming year an advanced class is to be formed fbr what is called the "High School course." Ten pupils who have completed the former course have signified their purposo to join this class. Of these some five or six are parties who graduated one or two years since, and have been teaching meanwhile. Quietly but persistently and rapidly this school has made its way to public recognition and favor on

The blow-

hards, who did all they could to injure it because it would not call in a rabblfe by promising great things which could not be done, have all subsided. And now the demand of the school on this basis yf merit is for more room. The next Legislature roust finish the building, and increase the appropriations, and It will do it very readily, we think. Gov. Hendricks came over hero to re conoltre and see if President Jones was not the man to organise the now Agri cultural College. He found him just the man, but bo also found him doing such a noble work here, that he thought that the interest* of this Institution and the cause of the public schools in the State, demanded his retention 9n his present position. —GRAND MATINEE, at2 P. M., July 4th, when will be produced the comedy of "Our Country Cousin," and tho to roe of "Nicodemus Nobbo." Miss Price will appear as Mrs. Kvorgroon.
