SAM. McDoKAUfc—The career of this young man appear* to have been brought to a sudden", thangh not untuitural termination. At Baltimore, at one o'clock last Tuesday morning. In a drunken brawl he made an unprovoked attack ujion Berry Amos, another sportlug chancier, and stabbed him totally. According to the testimony before the coroner's jury tho af&dr waa a heartless, brutal murder, and McDonald is now in prison awaiting trial. What money can do for him will be done, but it Is doubtful II It can do more than snve his neck from the baiter. And then It is quite probable that In thla ease money will be freely weed on the other aide. But whatever the final result, there la a lesson here for our young men and boys who have been Inclined to admire, and perhapa envy the free and easy life ot this man. Endowed with good natural ability, of Hue personal appearance, and with all the advantages of great wealth, he has made a wreck of himself by bis vices* This kind of life does not pay.
TUK present Board of Health Is one of the most efficient that Terre Haute has had tor years. It seems really anxious for information concerning all things detrimental to the health of the city, and ready to do all In Its power for the removal of the same. No doubt this is due in some degree to a desire to demonstrate to the citlaeus that it is not absolutely necessary to be "regular" in order to be a good physlean, or at least, a good health officer.
But the serious question arises whether we eon afford to purchase the health of the city at such a price. According to the old fogy notions which lurk in the medical profession, it Is generally thought better that diseaso should prevail than be checked by other than the "regular practice." Would it not be better for tho city council to dismiss these "eclectics" and homtBpathists who are discharging their duty, and put back those who Indignantly resigned becauae their dignity would not allow them to serve with these men? We simply commend the matter to the superior wisdom of the council. Our own opinion la—at least we are inclined to the opinion quite strongly, that it is better to keep the present board of health, though it is irregular. We t«lnk, or are inclined to think, that life and health are upon the whole of more value than the particular pathy of any school.
TILE exercises of the Eighth Annual Commencement of the High School occurred at the Opera House, last evening. That our people take a deep Interest In tho elty schools, Is evident from the fact that upon this, the hottest night of the
