possible" effort to make their picnic ex curaion on the Fourth, to Groendyke's Grove, one of unalloyed pleasure. The grove la one of the prettiest places In this locality, and the excursion will, undoubtedly he the big feature of the day we celebrate.

WB are plotted to learn from the Express of this morning that the saloon keepers association of this city has resolved to pay the city license of $100 without litigation, and will ask the council to permit them to pay pro rata at the rate of 9100 a year for the time that their permits hare to ran, so that their city licenses may expire with their state permits. This is a reasonable request, and should be promptly granted. They have also resolved to close at nine o'clock in the evening, and to pay nothing for the defense of any member of the association, who violates the 9 o'clock statutes

A ooKiuaPowwarr in the Express grumbles because The Mail gives items of local news which have appeared in the daily papers. Two or three things we would suggest to this grumbler. The first is that with three daily papers, all as eager Jbr locals aa those of this city, it hi pretty difficult fbr an item worth publishing not to get into some of them on or before Saturday. The second suggestion is that more than onehalf the readers of The Mail do not see the dailies at all, and they want the local news and look to The Mail for it. The third suggestion is, that this correspondent is under no obligations to take The Mail, and had better drop it, unless he gets Ms money's worth. Plenty of people do want it. Wo might add that we do not intend to manufacture locals for the sake of getting fteah ones to supply the demand. We can fill our columns with better matter than "made up" locals.

TH$ Tom Collins excitement which had almost subsided, was revived last evening, at the St. Clair House, in a manner that fbr a few minutes promised to be very serious in it* character. One of the boarders wrote TPTAM Collins wants to see yon after supper" on a card and sent a waiter with it to a follow boarder, at another table. He had been the victim of the Collins joke In the *e*ly part of the week, and this second attempt made him wmthfuL He sprang up from the table, anger nnd vengeance working iu every line of his free, rushed yoi and demanded of the clerk the meaning of this insult. The good-na-tured clerk endeavored to appease his wrath by laughing at it, hat this only Itjersnsed the flame and led In hard words. Thro hoi words f«wn the other side began to come ont, broad and plain, for a moment a fiaMaa scrim* hung in the balanos. Fortunately tor those concerned, the intervention of fVWndft led to a peaceful turn of afidm.

Mrs. Riddle purchases the real hair of the importers, ami manufactures switches, curls, wigs, chains and everything in this line. Her patrons have the advantage of selecting the natural hair and having switches made to order, and that too at less than the ready-made articles are sold. It is an enterprise that is deserving, and we are pleased to see is receiving the patronage of the ladies.

Mrs. Riddle does all kinds of embroidery and stamping. She has a full line of the Butterick and the Domestic patterns for ladies and children* garments, and gents' underwear. She has already the patterns for July and August, which Dressmakers will And to their advantage to call and examine.

DRESS MAKING.

MISSBS BKUSKR have opened a Dress Making establishment on Main street, in the rear room up stairs, one door east of Riddle's. Their work includes Children's clothes and Ladies' garments of every character. They refer to Mrs. Riddle.

—The Terre Haute Light Guards and the Terre Haute City Band will have a grand picnic, at Early's Grove, next Thursday. The City Band will fiirnish the music, and, among the diversions of the day, will be a company drill. A general invitation is extended to the public.
