THIS t'FHKAVAI-

It ia ooming, there can be no mistake about it. The premonitory rumblings which precede the earthquake are to be hoard in every quarter of the land. The flu-mem have organized into a great compact phalanx, which stretches ftom the Atlantic to the Golden Gate. The workingmen of all trade* and proftt* alone are combining into trades unions and

trades

I know It is common to decry these movements—to disparage the motive and predict evil of the result. The vast conservative force of society, which embraces within in Its numbers all who are satisfied with the present Mate of things, has able brains and able pens at work, arguing coolly and convincingly that these is no occasion for this array of opposition that many evils exist of course, but that they exist, as ja matter of necessity and can not be altogether eliminated* The effect of this vast labor organisation, composed in great part of foreigners, it to feared, and perhaps not without reason, will be detrimental to it not ultimately destructive of our system of freo government. Only recently, as a labor demonstration was parading with torchlights and music through the streets, I beard a gentleman of large culture and more than average ability, who to himself a most jwtient and hard worker, express the belief, sincerely and conscientiously entertained, that these combinations were "the beginning of the end" of Republican government. There may be truth in the remark there may be danger of the result, and yet come it will. The first note* of success have already been heard. The recent elections in this and in other States, show that party disintegration to rapidly going on. Much of the disorganisation hi- jur'Tr been laid to the temperance u~.. ven:. t, bathe to a dull observer who can not see that the allegiance to party to rapidly weakening and that the compact political organisations of a few years ago are felling to ptecea. The politicians will not admit It but they see it and feel It.

What is the cause of it A prevalent belief that our ial and political systems are out of».ut and need mending thai things are too unequal that the rich have It all their way and the poor are crowd**! to the wall utterly that money stands for too much and labor for f-o little. This feeling, defined or unUoj&ed, toaitl» bottom of this great upheaval in its various manifestations. It means a struggle for a Juster state of affairs, for greater equality tn the distribution of the good things cf Mfe The effort may not always be fpai i-d by intelligence, may make many mistake* and commit errata which will tend to thv tits own purpeaa, Yet it means wa.. «nd will not b~ *4ayed tn its course until it has finished task or Allied in it. Thepottticlansmay talk and the editor writ# in deprecation of it, but the movement v"* on in ^'te of tl r,i That* to a«i deters**"** that will bet:, rasrflyper nor anally discouraged. ..

assemblies. The amount of

organisation for mutual aid and protection which has been going on throughout the nation during the {Mat few years, and notably during the pant twelve months, is prodigious, almost incalculable.

What does It mean*? It maans something—it means a great deal. It to declaring itself skrwly. Some of theee days the full announcement will come like a thunder-clap. What does it mean? It means that there is a general feeling, which is daily becoming more general, that something Is wrong somewhere in our political and social system that tilings axe becoming, or have already become, too one-sided that somebody Is doing Injustice and that somebody else to suffering for it and that an effort is to be made to correct the manifold evils which have crept into the body politic.

if it to to be normal and healthy, -tleal and sodtol stagnatkm mean pocorruption and social disorder. We need an uphaaval in both, at Inter* vala, to purify and aet them to working propetly. Society begins to titiink when It to sgitatod, add nothing to so good for aoeiety a* thinking. It la common and natural to decry revolutions, yet revolu tlons are Inevitable, and

some evil they bring more good with them. There Is danger and disorder in the failing atructure and many cry out that the okl house, leaky and dilapidated as it may have been, was better than no Ir-nealaU. But when the new structure rL^, it to found to be firmer, lofller and in all respects better than the old.
