Kelly to not considered much of a lawyer, but what he lacks In the knowledge of law ho makes up for In cheek he can talk upon any subject with the greatest of ease to an energetic worker for the nomination, and has the advantage of his opponent in being well acquainted throughout the county. The present incumbent has no opposition whatever. He has served one term of four years, and will have little opposition for another. It is true he has aroused the ire of a number of members of the bar lately, and there are some democrats who would defeat him for the nom ination if they could. They claim that he to becoming altogether too zealous in his efforts to send prisoners to the penitentiary, and that in some cases he has gone a little ftirther than the law allows but then he to no politician, and of course would do nothing for policy. On the eontrary, when he talks to a county commissioner about the great expense the county to being put to In a criminal ewe, he bad considered tho evidence, and *was sure of the guilt of the person accused, and that there was no use to delay. To Ve sure he might have sent the case to Sullivan County, as he did that of Dr. Stone, and it won id have been tried long ago, but then he did not know that by keeping it here the attor neys would resort to "tricks that are vain" in order to delay the case.
But the candidates who will have to fight Baxter Bill are those for the LEOmUATCRK They are Benjamin F. Havens and Joseph Gilbert. Ben thinks the Baxter Bill a good joke, and just dares the Republican party to carry it through he to man of considerable ability, and to one of our best dttaens to a temperate man, although opposed to aay thing which looks toward prohibition his hobby to insurance, and should he bo elected he will endeavor to give the state a good law upon that rni^Kl Joe Gilbert to the champion granger of the county.
