A Shot for a Life.

Where the Kentucky river cuta its wsj through lh« mountains, havlng upon either bank bold rugged cltft*, (bit lift U»« ir snuamita five hnndred and a thousand flwt, as tbe case may b«, above the stream, there lived in early times a settler by ite bum of Rata* Branson, who, with his wife and child, a charming young girl of some nine or ten years of a*e, occupied a rudoeablo at the base of the precipice a little back frem the river.

Althoogh greatly exposed to danger, the Indians at that time being very plentiful throughout the reglou, he managed to live quietly for several y^MMT®«

The Indians frequently visited the rude homo of the hunter, and being aimv« welcomed and provided with such food as was in the larder, they main tallied a friendly attitude. Eapecially they were fond of the child, Maggie, and mure than one fierce warrior had been aeon sluing on the grass in from of the cabin listening to the childish

In this manner several years bad been passed, and Rufus Branson came to feel as secure as though he were within the walls of a froutler fort. One evening. Branson and bis wife were seated ne»r the doorway, when suddenly a shadow fell across the threshold, and the next moment a tall savage, whose reeling step and bloodshot eyes told that he was Intoxicated, appeared, and staggering to the log steps, scd threw himself upon them, gflis first demand was for fire water, which was, of course, reius ed, on the ground that there was nono iu the house. The Indian became cross and ogly, and declared with terrible oaiba that if the liquor was not produced he would murder the whole household. Branson was a brave, determined man, and although be dreaded the necessity, yet be saw he would be counpalled to take prompt steps to prevent the savage from executing his threat.

Wailing until the warrior had' made a demonstration, which he soon did by attempting to draw his tomahawk. Branson sprung at him, and knocked him down with a blow of bis fist, and tbea quietly disarmed and bound him where he lay. Alter a few moments of furious ravings and (utile efforts to free himself, the savage rolled over and sank into a drunken slumber. He did not awake until the next morning, but before he did so the settler had quietly removed the bonds and restored the weapons, which he laid by the sleepers side. The savage on awakening, rose slowly to his feet, felt his wrists, as though the thongs bad left feeling there, took up his weapons and, with ont speaking a word, disappeared in the timber near by.

What do you think ef that?' asked the wife, turning to her husband with a frightened look. •PshawJ Don't trouble yourself about the drunken brute!' answered the settler, lightly but as he turned aw a^ and stepped iuto the yard, be mut-

But as the leaves began to fall, the settler one day, while returning from hunting on the hills, and passing through a dense piece of timber aot far from the house, caught sight of a Agure lurking in the buahea, which quickly disappeared when he advanced to where it was, The figure was that of the Indian warrior whom he had kaAed down and jboond in the previous skiing.
