TEA VELI NO FEMA ES.

Perhaps the man meant to do me a favor when became up to me in the depot, wi&b a spinster bagging bis arm, ana wanted to know

iff

TH

wouldn't take

charge of her from Chicago to Detroit. Many men think a railroad journey rendered really pleasant by the coinpanionship of an unprotected female. She insisted on counting her bandbox I and traveling bag as we get seated, Sheconpted. There were just two. I counted and made no more nor lea«. Then she wanted her parsol put into the rack, her shawl lolaed up, and her bandbox counted again. I counted it. There was just exactly one bandbox of it.

As we got started she wanted to know if I was sure that we were on the right road to Detroit. I was sure. Then she wanted her traveling bag counted. I counted it. By this time she wanted the window up, and asked me if it wasn't a hot day. 1 said it was. Then she felt for her money and found it was safe, though she was not sure that she had lost it. While counting it she related bow Mrs. Graff, in going East five years ago, lost her purse ana three dollars. She wound up the story by asking me if it wasn't a not day. I said it-was. Then she wanted that bandbox counted, and I counted him. He was still one bandbox. There was a pause of five minutes, and then she wanted a drink. I got it for her. Then she wanted to know if we were on the right road to Detroit. I assured her that I was positivo of the fact. The brake man nere called out the name of a station in such an indistinct manner that the lady wanted me to go and see what the name really was. I went. It was Calumet. She wanted to know if I was sure that it was Calumet, and I put my hand on my sacred heart and assured her I would perish sooner than deceive her. By tbis time she wanted the traveling bag counted, and I counted ber. She figured as before. I had just finished counting when she wanted to know if I didn't think it was a hot day. I told ber I did.

We get along very well for the next half hour, as I got her to narrating a story about how sbe got lost in tho woods eighteen years before, but as soon as she bad finished it she wanted to knew if I was sure that we were on the right road to Detroit. I told her I hoped to perish with the liars if we were not, and then sbe was satisfied. Then the parasol fell down, and she wanted me to change a ten cent piece, and tho window had to go down. Wbeu we got to Marshall she wanted to know if the place wasn't named after court martial, and whether it wasn't barely possible that the station was Xiles, instead of Marshall. The bandbox was counted again, and he was just one. Then the window went up, and she asked me if, in my opinion, It wasn't a hot day. I replied that it was. Then she related a story about hsr uncle, another about a young lady who had been dead several years.

During the day I counted that bandbox three hundred times raised the window thirty times said it was a hot day until my tongue was blistered arranged that parasol twenty-onetimes got her sixteen drinks of water, and inquired the nameof thirteen stations. Sbe said it was so nice to have a man in whom a stranger could place confidence, and I dare not reply for fear of bringing out. another story. When wo reached Detroit I counted the things tbreo times over, helped her oft the ?ars, got ber a hack, directed her to a hotel, told her the street, price, nameof the landlord, head waiter, porter and cook assured her that she would not be robbed or murdered that it had been a hot day that Detroit bad a population of 100,000, and that the fall term nf school had commenced, and that all Detroit hack drivers were honest and obliging. Poor woman I hope the landlord didn't got out of patience with her artless ways. M. Quad.

E COMPLEX

rax.

I asked a druggist what particular article or line of goods he sola most oft Ho replied, without hesitation, "Compounds for improving the complexion."

The number of these preparations is surprising they must be generally employed. I have noticed that while nine girls out- of ten have a singularly smooth, perfect skin upon the face, the doctor Is constauty consulted with reference to roughness and eruptions on other parts of their persons, Girlsare not generally as healthy as boys, but the skin of their faces seem much smoother and finer than that of boys. This difference, it is fair to presume comes of the bottles and boxes found at the apothecaries. I have read, and you have all read, of the analysis which careful chemists have made of a great number of these preparations, and in this way we have learned that they are poisonous. Arsenic is a very common ingredient. Not one of them, the analysis of which I have examined, is fit to rub on the human skin. We ail re joice that the hair preparations so generally employed to color the hair a faw years since have gone out of fashion. rrhey poisoned us, doing a great deal of harm to the brain and nervous system. These preparations were generally less poisonous thsn the complexion fluids are, bnt were taken into the system in the same way, by absorption through the skin. The iuaprenaion is gaining (ground among medical men that a carta!n class or nervous affections, too common among our girls, originate in the fluids and powders which they employ to improve their complex tons.

What a sain it would be every way if they would keep their feces clear and bright by frequent bathing, exercise, ana

sunsnine, pure air! As things now go, they are not what they seem but it they would depend upon the natural methods, they would not only secure a bright, beautiful face, but they would be bright and happy from top to toe, all the way through, and not simply on a small portion of the sur ftce.— [Dlo Lewis in To-Hay.
