A movement to
Iu this movement our city pastors are taking a prominent part. Last Sonday temperance lectures were delivered by llev. Brakeman, at centenary, Kev. Henderson, at the Babtlat, Rev. Reed, at Asbury, aud by Father Leopold, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. On tomorrow it is expected that all the city pastors will speak on the subject, an^d on Monday evening there will be a niaia meeting of tbe friends of tempersmse at Dowling Hall. Speeches will be made by Col. Thompson, Col. Dowling and others, and a committoo consisting of Lucius Ryce, Rev. B. Condit, J. O. Jones, J. A. Parker, Capi. J. C. Buntin, P. W. Minshall, Sidney f. Davis, W. H. Bannister, W. B. Wharton, and Patrick W. Hagerty, will report and recommend a plan forfuture work.
Col. John W. Ray, of Indianapolis, has recently published a circular, giving some startling facte and figures, a condensation of which will be Interesting in this connection, and will tend to awaken thought in this direction. He shows that nine ooantiea, having47^081 voters, support 905 saloon*—nearly onehalf of all in the State and ftarnish jthe prisons with 850 outof 744 oonvicta being an average of 1 convict to every 134 voters, and every 340 of the population between six and twenty-one years of age. Had these convicts remained sober and industrious, and earned at borne 300 each per year, they would have added to tbe wealth of those nine couuties, 9105,000 annually. Col. Bay estimates tbat these 005 saloons cost those counties as follows For rent, each, $100 fuel and lights, flOO services of two attendants, |300 each, p*r year—lotal, 1724,000. The entire achodl revenue or tho same counties was less than baif tbat amount—only $290,890M, v?

thiaclty, which will result In groat and permanent good to ibo canae of temperanco, good moralt, peace and sobriety, if the leading spirits have the nerve" to perfect and carry ont their plans, ami are becked by the Mw and order-loving portion of tbe oommnnlty. As we understand It, tbe object is simply to see that the provisions of the Baxter Bill are strictly observed and rigidly enforced. Where saloon keepers comply with tbe law, they wilt not be molested. We sincerely hope tbe movement may le crowned with aaocess. While there are some objectionable features, we believe the law capable of doing much good In regulating tbe traffic. At least while it is on the statute books, it should be enforced.{ff it is a bad law, its enforcement will make the fact apparent.
1
There are in the State eighteen counties, including nine previously mentioned, with 84,801 voters having 1,179 saloons (more than half of all in the State,) and furnishing475outof the744 couvlota—an average of one eonvici to every 179 voters, and every 422 of thoi population. These counties lose annually in the labor of these 476 persons, at 1 3 0 0 a $ 1 4 2 5 0 0
There are sixigr-flve other counties which together furnish but 2S8 convicts —less than one-third of the whole number. These counties have 990 saloons, 154,842 voters, and an average of one convict for every 080 votors.
The remainingnlneconntlcuwhichso far as known to the officers of the law have nosaioona within their limits furnish only 31 oo viols—an average of one to every 016 voters, and every 1,401 of the population.
The report of tho Auditor of Mation oounty, for the year ending May 81,1872 Shown the following expenditure*: For criminals, $12,17290 tor criminal court, $22,01390 for poor expense, $46,41821total $S0,(X» 91. As It Is safe to estimate that of the criminal expense nine-tenths are due to the ass or Intoxicating liquors, and of tbe poor expenss at least one-third, we hare in this one eoanty an expenditure chargeable to liquor of no* leas than $846, SCO.
The cos* or the polios department and the station htow In Indianapolis Is about $43,287. Tbe cuaimittafai the station house, In 1872, were 8,417, and of these, 1,587 were tor drunkenness and consequent disorderly oonduet. The expenses for penltentariee (prison.) tor tbe la« year, wsre$UM9*?»t fseslpts $106^84 to—loss, $1MH»
The number of saloons, in 1888, were in 1S70, M»4 la 1872,2,186. The coat of operating these, scoordlng to tbs estimate above made, was $1,733,000. The school rmsss tor tbe State tor 1872, wss $1,671,998, or $160,1*4 Isss than tbe cost of nuudaf the saloons. Tbe total Stat# dst* is October, 1872. was which sould ^ave been paid in two and one-fourth years with toe lAiooey expsndod In renting, lighting, warming, and ssrviag tbssaloous. For the bencBt of those who do not boderatand what the term means, we would say tbat a "pound party" is one where ill the visitors bring a pound of something done up in package. These packages are aold u' auction, ordinarily attractive young slstqrs acting the part of auctioneers. ThA articles are sold is boys trade jack-kn.ves, •'unsight and unseen," and each package must be opened in the presence of tbe snttre. company. It la regarded as meaj^ to attend a "poundpa|tyM and not buy *1 least one package. Nios chaps must bid In actlclei for the glrls who want dreadfully to know what is done up In a particular package.
