A Lad*'* WhcU-i* Itn Explode* at the Depot—A Saratoga Trunk Wrecked and Burnt.
(Prom the Kaitaaa Oty Tim**, Sept. 4. There waa a fearful explosion yesterday afternoon, aboot fear o^clock, which for
time create great excite*
tnent among tb* crowd thronging the platform of the Union depot. The bag-gage-men bad Ju»t wheeled out froin tbe baggage-room a lot of irunka, and left tbem standing on end near tbe bag* gage-car of an outgoing train. Among this lot of trunka there wax one belonging to a fashionable young lady who had just taken her seat in tbe sleep-ing-car. Hbe was fearfully fashionable In her tnake-up,tbe mysteries of which will never be known except to herself and her maid. But It is not of ibis lady, but of her huge "Saratoga" trunk that we speak. Tbe trunk stood there on Its end. while all around In its Inimediate vicinity, unconscious of the fearful danger menacing them, stood crowds of people, some bound east, others west, some north and some south. Upon tbia trnnk leant a wellknown
celebrated for bis dig
nity, vigilance and decorom, looking quietly upon tbe rosb and bustle of tbe thronged platform.
Suddenly, and without the least notice, a load explosion occurred, and from the center of the "Saratoga" a (Uncharge of tire and smoke numt straps and band*, and *ent the end of the trunk into
the
fooklng
air, while shower of
(loves, hone, and all sorts of queer"fixings" belonging to a lady's wardrobe were scattered abroad over tbe platform. It would have been a scene that Nasi or Crulksbauk would have loved to have seen, to see how that above mentioned official blew from that trunk, and to have seen the terror and consternation of the "baggagesmashers" as they *ax*d u|mi tbe wreck. Before any one had sufficiently recovered from the surprise caused by the explosion, the trunks and contents were on Are. After some hesitation on the part the porters, who momentarily expectcd another infernal machine of torpedo to explode, a stream of water was thrown upon the burning wreck, and the fire was subdued. An investigatian Into the cause of this explosion, which was as loud as the report of oneol those old-fashioned army muikots.dlscovere I the causeof the explosion to be a patent inflated lady's oustle.
Now the question next arises in the minds of alt thinking men not familiar with such things, what are those natent combustible buatles made of, and why do the ladles wear tbem. It Is certainly unsafe to be near such queer machines. Just imagine how unpleasant It would be to have one of tbem explode while seated with her upon a sofa, or in a railroad car, or promenading at a soclablo or dance. Just think what a consternation would Imj created If the heat should cause a half dozen ofthom Infernal concerns to go ofl In a crowded church, or while seated with her you believe "pure from guile" or harm, with your arm aroudd her slender waist think of linvlng.vour arm blown oflf by the explosion. But it Is useless to speculate on what might happen, but lot all unite In a determined resolve to investigate all bustles within reach, and for the common safety let them be squelched. The discovery made yesterday at the Union Depot is too horrible to contemplate.

No matter how hard yoawork, no matter If it soils your hands or olotbes, so long as it leaves your heart pure, Bewars of such ''good places" as will lead you into the snares of the evil one. There are many doors, beside those of bar-rooms, which are almost the same as gateways down the world of woe.
Ttiia la the way the Chicago milkmen manipulate the lacteal fluid before selling it to their customers as a pure artlclo, a more profitable way than watering it. They skim the milk, taking from every eight gallons from two to
four
quarts of cream, which they
sell at the rate of one dollar per #llon. They then put about a tablespoonful of brown sugar In liquid form to every eight gallon can of this skimmed ndlk, and this restores the rich, creamy color to such an extent that the most experlencod dairy woman would be deceived. They aleo add trifle of salt, which Improve® the taate, and the fluid is then ready for sale. All this on tbe authority of an Indignant milkman, who contends that the public will not pay enough for pare milk, and goes on to expose tbe trick of the trade,
