Twenty-two yoars ago this week, Jos jC. Yates and his young bride were en joying a bridal trip from New York to Saratoga. This important episode in their lives was celebrated by a little tea party on Wednesday evening.,

Mr. Bartholomew, who has been in feeble health for some time, is about to retire from tho union depot dlnlng-hall where ho has made quite a competence There Is a lively competition on the part of half a dozen persons who desire to succeed him.

McDonald, the millionaire of Terre Haute, and Modors, as they are called •were in our city Tuesday. They were armed and equipped with dogs, guns and all the necessary paraphernalia for bringing down the prairie chicken They went west propelled by as fine Horse power as ever slrotched a tug in old Clark.—[Marshall Messenger.

The Marshall Messenger, spoaklngof Rev. James Hill's preaching In that towu last Sunday, says: The discourse was logical, eloquent. Interesting and Instructive. The people llsteued for fifty minutes to oue of the best die courses ever delivered In this city. Mr. Ifill is a plain, unassuming, christian gentleman. As a pulpit orator, he has no superior In this country.

S. B. llymer, who left the Vandalla road and went to California, whore he has held the position of Maater Mechanic on the S. A C. R. R., residing at Stockton, returned Thursday morning, at the urgent request of his wife, and will make this city his future home. He reports the tide of railroad travel to be tend lug more to the east than the west, which indicates that tho land of gold has passed the xenith of its glory and Is now on the wane.

Amos Rice, who was with the party that made the first survey of TerreItaute, died near Mattoon last Sunday, at the advanced sgo of eigbty-six year*. Rice was quite a character in the early history of this city. He made three fiatboat trips to New Orleans, receiving f40 each trip, and walked all the way back to save his money. Alone time he owned the well known Early fkrm, 160 acres north of the city, and 144 seres east of that. He owed Jacob D. Early $3,000, and to pay it made a sale, which stripped him not only of bit land but personal property.

Twenty.Ave years ago the middleaged men and women of to-day, and thoee now paaalng into ripe old age, kept time with light feet and lighter hearts to the moate of three well-known citizen musicians. The trio have paused away. First went Prof, niaxler, the leading spirit Worl Gregg followed, and last Saturday Jeeeph Hudson, the boon companion of tbeee men, the upright citisen, the generous friend, sickened and died in a few hours. One by one the old land marks, the men and women who hare witnessed the growth of Terre Haute from a pleasant village to a prosperous city, giro up the battle of life and are laid away in our beautiful cemetery.

Here's another case of man's tyranny over woman, In the making of laws. Mrs. Sophia Anftenbeider, on east Main street, cannot obtain renewal of license jto sell liquors because the new law says permits shall be granted only to legal voters.

The truly happiest family is not that attached to Barnnm's show. It consists of a poor widow with eight little girls. She inherited $07 the other day, and now rejoices in a |75 ailk dress, and each of the girls has a bright pink sash. She would have shown better sense if she had got herself and children each a pair of shoes at J. B. Ludowici fc Co's popular shoe store.

W. H. Paige fc Co., the music dealers in the Beach block, have been doing lively business this week In the sale of Chiokering Pianos. Since Mr. Paige commenced giving his sole attention to the music trade, he has been visiting the surrounding towns, and the people roundabout are made happy in knowing the facilities qnjoyed here for the purchase of all kinds of musical goods.

A favorite maxim of a wise old philosopher was, "some people live that they may eat I eat that I may live." It has been found that both he and the people he mentioned got what they ate at R. W. Rippetoe's White Front. It would make a saw-horse want to eat to glanco into bis well filled and woll kept store, so tedaptlng nnd various are the varieties of "goodies" there to be found. UTO"

A girl from the eooutry'dnmo to D. H. Wright's Photograph Gallery one day this week and waited half %dozen "paragraphs" taken. Wright ^mole a smile, but put her in position, and seht her away happy In the possession of the piotures, the sight of which will set her beaus nearly crazy. know yet but what they are graphs," and we give her? this para graph extra.

It's Lyne, (we are not lyin') opposite tha Torre-Hante House, who sells the choicest liquors and cigars to be found in tho city. If you want something pure and extra in tho way of fine •Id French Brandy, old Kentucky Bourbon, genuine Scotch Ale, Bass English Ale, Guinness' Dublin Stout, London Porter, choice cigars and the best Tobacco go to J. B. Xiyne's, oppo site the Terre-Haute House.

The prayer that we be not led into temptation is founded upon diviue and absolute knowledge of the human heart. There is probably a combination of temptatious to which any man will succumb. To stop in at Button fe Hamilton's Central Book Store and see the many nice books, and the thousand and one other things to be found there, both useful and ornamental, is a combination of temptations to buy that none can resist

A. Herr., of tho Opora'House Bazaar, devoted ten years to the manufacture ofcorsets in Enrope, and has been constantly In that trade since coming to this country. On another page he has some "talk about corsets," to which we direct attention of the thousands of lady readers of The Mail. There is no doubt that great lniory is often done by wearing ill shaped, poor fitting corsets. Wo can't imagine bow a woman can bear being laced up in one of those concerns anyhow but if they must wear them, care should be exercised in tho selection that they do not do injury.

Emma Black, living in a small town on the Mississippi, saved a man's life tho other day. lie was fishing and tumbled out of bis boat, and, being unable to swim, would have perished hsd not the maiden, disoorering bis danger, swam out to him, and, throwing into his bands her back hair, fonr feet in length, towed him to the land. Of course tbey were married. They moved to this city last week, in order to buy their family supplies at Jacob White's popular grocery store*

The life of a child was saved on Saturday last by the mother noticing that the medicine last prescribed at a city drug store, in the northeastern part of the city, was not of the same color aa medicine put up before from the same prescription. Therefore she woo id not give it to the child. On Investigation it proved that a boy filled tho prescription, using sugar of lead in place of tbo proper article." The foregoing we clip frem the Indianapolis Journal. In this city all each mistakes are avoided by having prescriptions filled at Bnntin & Armstrong's, who -are thoroughly educated in their profession

The reason why a watch la called a watch Is evidently beoaupe it ia always on its guard." When yon boy watch be on your guard against impositions. The best wsy ia to seek a well established dealer, one whose represen-| tations can be relied on. Such a man

The Bible has something to say about asking for something to eat aud tbey gave him A stone. Button & Hamilton* the successors of Bartlett it Co. are gentlemen of energy, taste and capital. Tbey intend that, as heretofore, the C^Bjitral shall keep the lead in tbo Book tirade of Terre-Haute. To do this they will keep in stock the standard publloatlons, with additions constantly of the newest and most popular booka of the day. They will make ,*taple and fancy stationery a specialty

A man at Harper's Ferry owni a whole mountain and wants to trade It for a shot gun. If ho would come ont hefre and see the elegant stock of carriages at W. R. Mercer's Coach Works be woafd want to trade for them. Don't know whether Mercer wants any "mountains," but wedoknotf that-tbo "mountings' on his carriages, buggies and phaetons are surpassingly elegant, showing the exquisite taste of the workmen In bis employ.
