HOW SUB STOPPED 1T
An exchange aaya the subject of bor cowing *nd lendiCR came op la the coarse of conversation with one of it* subscriber* the other day, when he suddenly recollected a (tinny reminiscence of that character whioh bad happened in hi* own neighborhood. He said he had a neighbor wboso ft mil were great borrowers, but not so distinguised as paj'uiaatera—they were always borrowing, but seldom, if
ever,
returned the
exa?t amount borrowed. An old Quaker lady, another neighbor, who bad endured these invasion* for a long lime patiently, hit upon a very philosophical tnodo of eventually putting a stop to the nuisance. Keeping bor own counsel, tbo next time her g6od man went to town, he had a separate and express order to purchase a pound of host tea and also a new canister to put it in. As he Knew she already had plenty of tea and also ft canister, ho was puzzled to determine what the old lady wanted of uioro tea nnd a new canister, but bis questioning and reasonings elicited nothing inure than a repetition of the order.
Jim, did I not toll tbee to get me pound of the best tea and a new canis ter? Now go along and do as I bid thee."
And go along be did, and when he came borne at night the tea and now cannlster were his companions. The old lady took them froui him with an amused expression on her usual placid featurcM, and depositing the tea in the cannister. set it on tbeshelf for a special use. It had not long to wail, for the borrowing neighbor had frequent usfl for the aromatic herb. The good old lady loaned generously, emptying back in the canister any remittance of borrowed teas which the neighbor's cotmcionce inclined her to make. Time went on, and after something less than the one-hundredlh timoof borrowing, the neighbor again appeared for "just another drawing of lea," when the oft viHited toa-cuniater wu* brought out und found to bo empty, and the good old lady and obliging neighbor was just one pound of lea poorer than when she booght the now canister, which now only remained to tell the story. Then she mnde a little characteristic speech perhap* the flint in her life she said
Thou seest that empty uanlsior. flllod it for thee with a pound of my best ten and 1 bare lent it all to thee in driblet* and put into it all thou hast sent me in return, and none but thyself hath taken therefrom or added unto it, and uow thou seett it empty therefore I will H»y to theo, thou hast borrowed thyself out nnd I can lend to thee* no more!"
THE GIRL OF 'THE PERIOD,
The girl of the period, sauntering beforn one down Broadway, is ono pano rama of awful aurprisoa from topto too. Her clothes characterize her. She is bundled, not draped. Nhe is puckered, not folded. She struts, she does not nwcop. She has not one of the attributesof nature nor of proper art. She neither soothes the eye like a flower, nor pleases it Uko a picture. 8he wen rlCH it like a kaleidoscope. She is meaningless dazzle of broken effects. Surely it Is one of tbo requisites of a tiLsteful garb t.'-at the expression of effort to plcaso shall be wanting in it that tho mysteries of tlio toilet shall not be suggested by It that tho steps to its completion shall bo knocked away like tho sculptor's ladder from the statue, and the mental force expended upon.it bo swept out of sight like the chips on tlio studio floor. Who that is mathematically or metaphysically inclined can meet a mo|ernly-at-tirod woman without a calculation of tho hours expended ujon the arc hi lecture of her dress, without a guess at the stilettos in a hem, at tho hems to frill, at tho friiln to skirt, at tho skirts to a dress without dissecting tho organization of her chignon in the anato my of melancholy without a morbid wonder If she wore her front friz to breakfast In her crimping pins? "An material object," says Kuskln, "whirl can give us plesaure In the simple contemplation of its outward quslilies, without any dliect and dctlmto exertion of the Intellect, I call In somo way or some degreo beautiful." It Is painful to consider tho "exortion of intellect" expended upon the contemplation of the modorn belle' An exhaustive analysis of the law of excluded middle, an Intelligent defense of the categorical imperative, serious attack of tho theory of evolution might justify It. If "exertion of intellect" stands censor on tho beauty of nor costume, Heaven save the mark! I conceive that it Is use and use alone which leads ono of us, tolerably trained to recognise any criterion of grace or nuy #on«o of the fitness of things, to tolerate, if fur the sake of grace an« fitness only, the styles of dress to which we are moro or less conforming every day of our lives. Fifty years hence they will seem to us as uncultivated as the nose-rings of the Hottentot seem to-day. The dictum o£ our great-grand children upon, for instance. what has been termed the "Kangaroo style of dress will fort her contain new and severer elements of criticism than any which go to form our judgment upon fashion* which repel us onlv because they are out of d*|e.—• [Miss Vhelps.
