A LOST PATIENT.

A

scientific periodical relates

ihi*«ogg«*tiT» story: Some time since a lady called upon a celebrated oculist in order to consult

vv*w.-*--w

glaooe the doctor saw that she was a lady of rank and wealth. He looked at her eyes, shook his head and thought the treatment would require much time, as there were reasons to fear amaurosis in her case. He must advise her, first of all, that as she had informed him she was residing a considerable distance in the country, she must

move

into the city at once, and thus enable him to see hor Irequently if possible, daily.

The lady then routed an elegant mansion, inovei into the city, and the physician was punctual in his attendance. He prescribed this and that, and thus days run into weeks and weeks Into mouths. The physician tried to console her.

One day the patient hit upon a curious scheme, and she waited not long before carrying it into effect.

She procured for herself a rery old and poor attire, put a hood of tremendous size upon ner head, took an old umbrella aud a market basket in her hand, and in thexe habiliments she via ited her physician, selecting for the purpose a very ralnv day. She had so well succeeded in distorting and disguising herself that the eye even of a lover could scarcely have recognized her. She was obliged to wait a long time in the ante-room of her phvsician, with many others, who, like her, were seeking relief. At last her turn came.

Well, my good woman, what have you to complain of?" Very bad eyes, doctor," she answered.

He took her to the light, looked into her eyes but failed to recognize his patient. Shrugging his shoulders, he said:

Yonr eyes are well enough." Well she said. Yes I kuow what I am saying." But I have been told that 1 was getting the—a—a I forget how it is called."

Amaurosis?" "Yes, that is It. doctor." "Don't lot them make you bolieve any such nonsense. Your eyes are a little weak, but that is all. Your physician IH an AN A!"

An Ye*, an ass! Toll him boldly that I said so."

The lady now arose, and In her customary voice said: "Sir, you are my physician don't you know me?"

The face the sage counselor made is easier to imagine than to describe. Gracious, madam!" he commenced to stammer an apology, but the lady would not listen, and left him indignantly. Sho never saw the gentleman any more.

CIllCUS-GOIXa IN THE DAYS OF YO UT1I.

Kate Field In the New York Tribune.] I once heard a bright child declare that if circuses wore prohibited in heaven «he did not wish to go there. She had been buptlzed. was uuder Christian influences, and, previous to this heterodoxy, had neyer glvou her good parents a moment's anxiety. Her naive utterancos touched a responsive chord within my own breast, lor well did I remomber how gloriously the circus Nhone by the light of other Java: how the ring-master, in a wrinkled dress cuat, seemed the most enviable of mortals, being on speaking terms with all the celestial creatures who Jumped over flags and through balloons how the clown wns the dearest, funniest of men,how the youngathletes in tights and spangles were my beau ideals of niusculinity and how La Belle Kose, with one foot upon her native heath, otherwlso a woll padded saddle, and theothor pointed in the direction of the sweet little cherubs that sat up aloft was the most fascinating of her sex. I am pursuaded that circuses till an aching void in the universo. What cblluron did before their lnvontlon I shuddor to think, lor circuses are to childhood what butter is to bread and what the world did before the birth of Barnum Is an almost equally frightful problem. Some are torn to shown, others attain shows, and yet again others havo shows thrust upon theui. lUrnum is a born showman. If ever a man fulfilled his destiny it Is the discoverer of Tom Thumb. With the ins|orltv of men and women life Is a failure. Not till ono leg dangles In the grave Is their rawon d'nr disclosed. Though pursuod by tongues of fire, Barnum remains Invincible when Iron, stone and mortar crumble around him, and while yet the smoke is telling volume* of destruction, tho cheery voice of the showman exclaims, "Here you are, gentlemen admission 80 cents, children half price."

The Best Evidence!

The following letter from REV. E. S. HE8T, Pastor M. E. Church, Katlck, Mass., will be read with interest by many physicians. Also those sutler lag from the same disease as afflicted the sou of the Rev. E. S. Best. No person can doubt this testimony, and there is no doubt about the curative powers of VEOETINK.

NATICJC, Mass., Jan. 1,1S73.

Mr. 11. R. STKVHWS: Dear Sir— We have good reason for regarding your VKOETIHK a medicine or the

reatest value. We feel assured that it has the means of saving our son's Hie. He Is now seventeen years of age for the last two years he has suffered from necrosis 01 hi leg, caused by scrofulous affection, and was so far reduced that nearly all who saw him thought his recovery imiiosslble. A council of able physicians could give us but the faintest hope of his ever rallying, two of the number declaring that he was beyond the reach of human remedies, that even amputation could not save him, as he had not vigor enough to endure the operation. Jmt theu we commenced given him VKOKTINK, and from that time to the present he has been continuously Improving. He has lately resumed his stud!**, thrown away crutches and cane, and walks about cheerful and strong.

Though there Is still some discharge from the opening where his limb was In need. we have the fullest ctnfldence that In a little lime he will be perfectly cured.

He has taken about three doxen bottles of VEUET1NE, but lately u*esbut little, ns be declares that be is too well to be taking medicine.

Respectfully yours, RS BEST. MRS L. C. F. BEST.

The range of disorders which yield to the Influence of this medicine, and the HUM.her of defined diseases which It never tails to cute, are greater than any other single medicine has hitherto been even recoinmeuded for, by any oiher than the proprietors of some quack uostraur. Tliese diseases are Scrofula and all Erm-tlve diseases and Tumors, KheumatUm, GouU Neuralgia, aud Spinal complaints, and all inflammatory symptoms, Ulcers, all Syphilitic diseases, Kidney and i*ladder diseases, Dropsy, the whole train of natnful disorders which so generally fit let American women, and which carry anuually thousands of them to premature graves Dyspepsia, that universal curse of American manhood Heartburn, PI lee, Const ipatlon. Nervousness, inability to sleep and Impure blood.

This is formidable list of human all' ments for any single medicine to suectestully attack, and it is not probable that any one article before the public has the power to cure the quarter of them excepting the VK«!STIMK. it lays the axe at ttw root of the tree of dlseaae by first eliminating every Impurity from the blood, promoting the secretions, opening the port*—the great escape valves of the system—Invigorating the liver to Its full and natural action, cleanslug the stomach and strengthening digestion. This much accomplished, the speedy and the permanent cure of not only the diseases we have enumerated, but likewise the whole train of chronic and constitutional nisorders. Is certain to follow. This Is precisely what VKUKTIHK does, aud It does It so quickly aud so easily, that It Is an accomplished fact almost before the patient Is awarvof It himself Jtnn-3S
