the best bed.

Of the el *bt pounds which a man eats and drinks in a day, it Is thought that not less than five pounds leave his body through the skin. And of these Are poonds. a considerable percentage escapes during the night while be is in bed. The larger part of this is water, but in addition there Is much effete and poisonous matter. This, being in great part gaseous In form, penetrates every part of the bed. Thus all parts of the bed—mattress, blankets, as well as sheets—soon become foul, and need purification.

The mattress needs this renovation quite as much as the sheets. To allow the sheets to be used without washing cr changing throe or six months would be regarded as bad housekeeping but I insist, if a thin sheet can absorb enough poisonous excretions of the body to malce it unfit for use in a few days, a thick mattress, which can absorb and retain a thousand times as much of these poisonous excretlona, need to be purified as often certainly as once in three months. A sheet can be washed. A rontir «s cannot bo renovated In this way. Indeed, there is no other W8y of cltaning a mattress but by steaming It or picking It to pieces, and thus in fragments exposing it to the direct rays of the sun. As these roccsw* are scarcely practicable with any of the ordinary matresses, I am decidedly of the opinion that the good old-fashioned straw bed, which can every three months be exchanged for fresh straw and the tick washed, is the Hneet stand healthiest of beds.

If in the winter season the porousness of the straw bed makes it a little uncomfortable, spread over it a comforter or two woolen blankets, which should be washed as often as every two woaks. With this arrangement, If you waih all the bed-covering as often as once In one or two weeks, you will have a delightful, healthy bed.

Now, if you have the bed to air. with open windows during the day, and not make it up for the night before evening, you will have added greatly to the sweetness of your rest, In consequence to the tone of your health.

I heartily wish this good chan, uld be everywhere introduced. On those who have thus attended to this important inattor cm Judge of its influence on the general health and spirits.—[Dio LewU.

LA TJQHINQ CHILDREN. Oive me (says a writer) the boy or girl who smiles as soon as the first rays of the morning sun glance in through the window, gav, happy and kind. Such a boy will be fit to "make up" into a man—at least when contrasted with a sullen, morose, crabbed fellow, who snaps and snarls like a surly cur, or growls and grunts like an untamed hyena, from the moment he opens his angry oyes till be Is "confronted" by his breakfast. Such a girl, other things being favorable, will be good material to aid In gladdening some comfortable home, or to refluo, civilize, tame and humanize a rude brother, making him gentle, affectionate and lovable. It is a feast to even look at such a joy-in-spiring girl, such a woman-girl, and see the smiles flowing, so to speak, from the parted lips, displaying a set of clean, well-brushed teeth, looking almost the personification of beauty and

Koodness,

singing and ss merry as the

Irds, the wide-awake birds that commenced their morning concert long before the lazy boys dreamed that the sun was approaching and about to pour a whole flood of light and warmth upon the earth. Such a girl Is like a gentle shower to the parchod earth, bestowing kind word", sweet smiles and acts of mercy to all around her—the joy and light "of the household.

THE HA Ili.

A correspondent asks by what means this nulsince may be prevented, and If has already made its appearance, how it may be removed.

As Is usual, It Is much easier to prevent than to cure. The prevention consists in the avoidance of sharp combs and brushes, and dally bathing the hoad with cold water.

Numberless cases of dandruff have been produced by scratching the head with sharp combs and brushes. If any one doubts It, lot them try the same practice upon the buck of his hand, .lie will find In a few days branlike •cales, closely resembling dandruff, thrown off In considerable quantity.

When tho difficulty already exists in the hair, it is to bo removed by the same simple means whlchwlll preventlt. 1 do not Intend to deny that certain heads aro disposed to this branny excretion, but these constitute but a small part of the oases of dandrufT[— Dlo Lewis.

AMVSK THK (Hlt.DHKN. Young brains and hands must find employment. If nothing good Is provided for the little ones they will be suro to find "some mischief still" to employ their "little hands" In doing. If a school teacher wants to show ofT a school of young children to the very worst advantage, lot them bo told to fold their arms and sit still for about five minutes. It is astonishing to see what an amount of hitching and hunching, of twisting and turning, smiling and giggling can l»e crowded into five minutes when children have nothing else to do. A really wise teacher will not do this. Little children need active employments. Flve|minutes are too precious to be thrown away In developing monkey shines. A short oral lesson or storv would amuse tho minds and Instruct at the same time but the teachcr needs to be alive to Instruct. A statue placed In tho teacher's chair will do to look at, but even the smallest scholar will soon le&ru that it is only wood or stone, and value it accordingly.

If yon hare stained your muslin or gingham dress, or your white pants, with berries, before wetting with anything else pour boiling water through the stains, and they will disappear. Before fruit-Juice dries It can often be removed by cold water, using a sponge and towel if necessary. Rubbing the Angers with the inside of the parings of apples will remove most of the stain caused by paring.
