SEEKIXG NEW HOMES.

Something About the 40,000 Immigrant* that Have Landed at Cattle Garden this Week— Who they A re, Where they arc Uoing, and What they Expect*

From the New York San.J During tbo last week more immigrants have landed at Castle Garden than ever before in seven consecutive days. The largest number ever landed in a single day was the 8,388 who came ashore on Monday. On the corrrsponding day one year ago over 7,000 were landed. Including those expected to laud to-day the total number of immigrants for the week will be considerably more than 40,000. For the previous week the number was almost as large, falling short only about 4,000. As tnany more are expected during the two coming weeks, after which time immigration will gradually drop off. Toe figures given include those only tiiat have landed at Castle Garden. For the year 1872 over 350,000 arrived at this port, and from the indications now given it Is probable that the number this year will bo more than 400,000.

These immigrants are mostly German and Irish, the number of these nationalities lx ing about equally divided. Then there is a large percentage A Swedes and Norwegians. The others are of almost every nationality, from the rugged, stalwart men of Northern Europe and Asia to the darkeyed dwellers on the sunny Mediterranean coast. Nine-tenths of the immigrants are loaded on the cars and rolled sway toward the West. Tho others Hcatter through the city or go to the neighboring cities. As a class they are a much belter grade of people than the emigrant of live or eight years ago, and one cannot spend an hour at the Garden without being struck by the 1 irge proportion of intelligent faces. Those from the northern countries es poclally impress the observer that they will make good citizens. They no longer start fur America with their wordly goods within the compass of a small bundle on their backs, but bring stalwart chests and truuks. The bundle is fast disappearing. They are men In better circumstances than the original immigrant, and most of thein havo enough cash to give them a very good start in the New World.

Yesterday afternoon there wore about two thousand new comers in ihe garden wailing for tho officials to unload and register their bnggago. Tho crush during tho week had caused a little delay at times in getting them started for th-ir destinations, anil some immigrants have been compelled to wait a day or two. Thoro is a pathetic side to tho picture of two thousand strangers in a strange land that would touch oven tho hearts of servant plagued housckoopors. In the curious crowd are so many hopeful men, tired women, so many eager faced children and little babies, all bent on reaching America and when America is reached the reaction is painful and often mournful, bccaiiso not a single friendly face is to be seen. Sometimes it is a family group, sometimes a colony of twenty or more, and often a man and his wife or a HIIIKIO individual who aro thus waiting Ibr tho next turn in tho wheel of events.

The men aro tough, hardy and sunburned. They look hopefully, yet there a shade ot sadness about them, as of disappointment. Tho women aro bareheaded and very plainly dressed. Thore is a peculiar g'ow to their countenances caused by Kuropoan out-door work. When a liltlo company starts for the railroad tho women often carry the heavy Imggage, although it is not uncommon to seo husband and wife clinging to tho straps of their only trunk. The admirable physiques of tho immigrants is noticeable.

Tho reasons for Journeying to Amorica are different with dilVorent nationalities. There has been a systematic series of misrepresentations mado to the Italians concerning this country, and although efforts havo been maue in Italy to contradict 'thorn, tho tide has not been stopped, and many are still journeying to the country where they*expect to havo nothing to do and plenty to eat

The Norwegians have In view the lVrtilo prairies of Minnesota and the Northwest, whero thov can find their much loved ruggod cllniato without rock-bound coasts. The Irish and Germans havo been influenced by friends who havo gone before them to make the journey, and they Invariably fettle down with their friends. Most of their passage* are paid on this side of the water, and over half tho immigrants' tickets from Kuropo aro supplied In (\»stlo Garden.

There is much less immigrant swindling than formerly. There Is so much sVHtetn required in landing them the sharks havo not got the chanco to fleece the new comer that they had tlvo years ago, until they go from the Garden to the city, there is llttledangor. Most of them are sent diroctly to tho West, and are carefully guarded until fairly on their way.

A MOTlfKR'S LAST, LTX1 EIUXV LOOK. A short time since. In this city, a brilliant and much admired lady, who had been suffering for somo time with a trouble of tho eye*, was led to fear a speedy change for the worse, and immediately consulted her physician. An examination discovered a sudden and fatal failing in the optic nerve, and the information was Imparted as gently as possible that the patient could not retain her sight more than a few days at most, and was liable to bo totally deprived of it at any moment. The afflicted mother returned to her home, quietly made such arrangements would occur to one about to commence so dark a journey of life, and then bad her two children, attired in their sweetest costumes, brought before her and so, with their little fact* lifted to hers, and tears gathering for some great misfortune thai they hardly reafiaed, the light faded out of the mother's eyes, leaving an ineffectual picture of the dearest to her on earth a memory of bright faces that will console her In many a dark boor.—(COTington, Ky., Journal.

A vorxo, though1.fnl lady Is picking out her bridal embroideries all aloiw, and a group of country Hermans, wh# never have been shopping outside a village store, wander round, father, wife, grandmother, little boy, baby and big girl, all nix in search of a Balmoral petticoat which they have oame up to town to purchase. "The wonder la that nobody look* pleased or satisfied over what she get*. From tho mad time at the lace counter to the liule precisian captious over her one pair of gloves for the season, they look as If a dtssagreeable necessity compelled them to the business, when everybody knows It is the treat of their lives. All the worse for them if they pretend It Isn't, I$o*are of the woman who says she x»n't like to go shopping. In such a region she denies her sex, and what such a woman be good for but ^nst stmtagema snd spoil*."—

C«Dl«nr Liniment.

There is no pain which the Centaur Liniment will not relieve, no swelling it will not subdue, and no lameness which it will not care. This is strong language, but it is trne. Where the parts are not gone, its effects are marvelous. It has produced more cures of rheumatism, neuralgia, lock-jaw, palsy, sprains, swellings, caked-breasts, scalds, burns, salt-rheuui, ear-ache, «fcc., upon the human frame, and of strains, spavin, gal la, Ac., upon animals iu one year than have all other pretended remedies since the world began. It is a counter irritant, an all-healing pain reliever. Cripples throw away their crutches, the lame walk, poisonous bites are rendered harmless and the wounded are healed without a scar. It is no humbug. The recipe is published around each bottle. It is selling as no article over before sold, and it sells because it does just what it pretends to do. Those who now suffer from rheumatism, pain or swelling deserve to suffer if they will not use Centaur Liniment. More than 1000 certificates of remarkable cures, including frozen limbs, chronic-rheumatism, gout, running tumors, fcc., have been received. We will send a circular containing certificates, the recipe, ttc., gratis, to any one requesting it. One bottle of the yellow wrappt Centaur Liniment is worth one hundred dollars for spavined or sweenied horses and mules, »r for screw-worm in sheep. Stock-owners— this liniment is worth your attention. No family should be without Centaur Liniment. J. 13.
