HOUSE HOLD RECEIPTS.

CORE FOR A Bens.—Tako a raw po tato, scrape it and bind on it will soothe the burned part immediately.

S TARCH.—Make your starch as usaal then add a little salt and a little cook ing soda, the size of a bean. Wring the clothes out of the starch, plange in cold water, and wring out immediately When they are ironed it will gire them a beautiful gloss.

The peeler* of onions in Bedfordshire, England, where the crop i# raised by the acre, and prepared lor pickling in eighteen-gallon casks, find that when the onions are peeled under water, the eyes are nofc affected, or only slightly so and thus one fertile source of tears may be said to bo dried up forever

When you wish to clean a lamp noy, hold a linen cloth against one end of the chimney and place the other end in your mouth breathe in it until it is covered inaide with moisture, push the cloth into the chimney with a smooth, slender stick, and rub it around until the moisture is absorbed repeat the process and breathe on the outer surface also rub this with a cloth until dry, and you have a clean, bright chimney. Holt newspaper will tako the place of a linen cloth. Da not uso cotton cloth on glassware.

BUBBLES.

Blowing bubbles—what fun it is! Can anything be prettier than those fairy balloons, tinged with rainbow colors, as they float away in the sunlight? And we shall have to confess that, big as we are, we never see a group of children, with their pipes and their soapsuds without wanting to go and help them— without an aching to get tho pipe into our own hands and to send some of those tiny globes soaring off into space on our own uccount. The only drawback to this sport is that the bubbles so soon break. But by using tho following simple mixture, whicn any older sister can prepare for the little ones, it is said that thoy will last much longer than when made in the old way:

Dissolve a quarter of an ounce of castile or oil soap, cup up in small pieces, in tbreo-quarters of a pint of water, and boil for two or three minutes then add fivo ounces af glycerine. When cold, this fluid will produce the best and most lasting hubbies that can bo blown

AD VICE TO YO UNO LA DIES. Tho following sensible article comes tous across the continent, in the San Francisco News Letter:

At tho agricultural fair in Santa Clara, prizes wore offered for the best cooks among tho unmarried ladles This is a move in the right direction, and wo hail tho f.ict as an evidence that wo are to roturn to tho simplicity of early times, when our wives were help-mnets Instead of "help-eats when tho young wife brought to the matrimonial copartnership a willing ness to bear hor share of the burden and labor of lifo when ono silk frock, one china tea-sot, half a dozen of silver spoons, and counterpanes of her own patch-work, woro oviuenco* of the sim nllcity of hor taste, tho oconomy of hor life, ant] tho promises offuturo industry. Now, tho young brldo mu*t begin wuoro hor mothor leaves off. Hor outfit is a trousseau, a gorgeous house, rich in upholstery, mirrors, carvings, and ornamentations of paint, plaster, silk, and velvet 8ho snfers at cottage whore lovo Is, and prefers tho cheap and showy boarding-bouso to her own but humbler homo. Tho Santa Clara fair gives not only a prizo for the best young cook who can manage a cheap und economical dinner, but other pri/.os will be hanging round within scent of savory viands to nose themselves out a wife—awkward, beardless, robust young farmers, ready to offer thornselvos, their virtuous lives, their Industrious habits, and their wcll-tlllod farms, to brldo who will know how to preside over tho multifarious duties of ho11 in the country. Wo advise our city girls to go in and win. Show tho country maiden that you. too, know how to broil and bako, fry and stow then, for thn finish to your feast, give an extra dessert—something to tickle the farmer's palato, and ton to one you will stoal away from tho country girl tho honors and lovers of tho day." And when the farmor's boy a-wooing comes, accept his hard hand nnd honest heart as a surer anchor and a firmer trust than tho half-gentleman, half-hoodlum who parts his hair In the mlddlo and offers to sharo with you the chances In his lottery of lifo. If wo had a thousand sweethearts, wo would ndvlso all save ono to go to tho country. If we had a thousand genteol. half-starved city frleuds, Ashling the grinning fiend of genteol poverty, striving to keep up apnoarauces, living beyond their means, in constant dread of whnt the world would say, slaves to society, we would say, go to tho country, with half a hundred acres of God's soil, you may livo happy, healthful, independent, self-rospected and contented.

A FRRNOTT URCRIPT FOU RETAINING A GOOD IIKAD or UAIR.—From a French lady wo have received the following directions for preeorvlng the hair: 1.—To loosen out the whole mast at least twice a week into a tin bath filled with tepid water and bran. 2.—To rub into the roots of tho hair the yolk of two eggs, which rinse off afterwards. 3.—To brush the hair briskly after this with a perfectly drv and clean brush. Brushes, by ana by, can be kept pure by borax and warm water. 4—To use no thick pomades of any kind, but, if the hair be dry, to moisten it at the roots with a little oil of the castor bean, perfumed with rose. 5.—And this is the most Important for retaining unbroken and glossy haln To woar at nisht a smalt handkerchief of very soft black silk or white pongee, which holds the hsir in place and pre* vents it from knotting or tangling. This handkerchief may be hidden by a square handkerchief of delicate lace knotted under tbe chin. The contact with the silk appears to have a smoothing effect on the surface of the hair, making it what the French call lis»e*

BRILLIANT Exrtorr.—A farmer of a cheerful and inquiring turn of mind, a few miles west of the city, wanted to scare an old and worthless dog so that he would run away and never come back again, and he got his old powder horn, put a little pile near tbe dog*a nose, and a coal of fire a few inches fro in the powder. He then took the powder horn with the intention of pouring a little on the coal. lie held the horn up, removed bis thumb, the powder strnck the coal there was an explosion The old dog was badly scared. The farmer has not seen him since, but tbe doctors think he will be able to see him in two or three weeks, or as soon as he recovers.—[Springfield (111.) Register.

Cumberland, Ar

In their treatment, a purgative, exerting a powerful influence upon these various organs, Is essentially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Ds. J. WALKBB'S VTKBGAK BITTKRS, as they will speedily remove the dark-colored viscid matter with whloh the bowels are loaded, at the same time stimulating the secretioss or the liver, and generally restoring the healthy functions of the digestive organs.
