^4 «^1D FACT.
A paragraph is going the rounds of the preM to the effects that a few days since a New York man advertised for a housekeeper, offering board and lodging for a compensation, and at the appointed hour filtv middle-aged women, mostly well dressed, although in many cases their garments were thin and faded, presented themselves as applicants, and all were willing to give tneir services for a home and not a cent of compensation. This is no doubt true, and at the same time a sad commentary on life in our great cities, no doubt, a similar call in Boston, Philadelphia or Baltimore would bring out an equal number of o«pind-nts.

Show the great portion of these homeless women comfort and quiet coupled wjth easy domestic service in the country, and the chancos are that nearly every one would shrug her shoulders and crawl ofl to the attic she calls a home to shiver and starve away her remaining years of wretchedness. Men are not exempt from this same diseaso. 'J

A young man stood up in the Chicago meeting, holding a slip of paper in his hand. "This is a telegram irom Philadelphia," said the young man, "and it reads thus: "Uncle Jack is dying Come on immediately." Uncle Jack was a rich and proud man in Philadelphia, occupying a high social position, with whom this young man bad been dealing very faithfully, endeavoring to persuade him to make his peace with God by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and now, when he was looking death in the face, the poor dying mortal could think of no human being HO likely to do him good as his young friend. Now, said the young man,"I havo telegraphed to Uncle Jack this reply *1 can not come to Philadelphia but ir Uncle jHck will believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, as sure as thero is a God in Heaven Undo Jack will be saved. Now," continued tho young man, "I want this meeting to spend two minutes in silent praver that tho blessing of Almighty God may go with this dispatch The request was complied with.' Ab»ut 3 I\ M. the young m.in receive'J this telogram: "You need not come to Philadelphia. UnoleJack is very happy in balieviug in Jesus. Ho Is saved.'' $.

A California paper describes tho discovery oftiiree villages ofZunl Indians supposed to be the survivors of the anciont Aztecw. Thev dwoll on the great trail from Port Mohave, on tho Colorado, to Aibuqeorque, on the Rio (irande, and are about a day's journey from the diamond fields. They number about 0.000, and aro very oifferont from other tribes, being in looks, bearing and pruio of dress a manifestly superior race. The women are couiely and modest in dro-s. their houses are clean and their cooking good. Certain kinds of cloth are made by them These people have fields 4U0rn, wheat and vegetables, also llocks'oT shoep anil goats and all the domestic animals. They aro friendly to tho whites, never fight aggressively, but are stubborn in defense. Their houses aro of stone, throe stories high, and built in terrace form. They worship tho Great Spirit, and beliove lie dwells in tho sun.
A oKNTt.KMAi* named llodhammer, from tho intorior of California, went to the States and took unto himself a wlfo and returned therewith, bringing nt tho same time his wife's sister. When tho cirrlago reached Oroville, Mr. llodhammer alighted, as did the two ladies. They all walked up to the building, where th.«y mot Mr. Smiley, of Pike, Mr. Bodhammor proceeded to introduce his wile, saying. "Mr. Smiley, my wito." "Tho hell!" said Smiley, grasping her baud in eestacy. Then turning to the other lady. Bodlmmmer introduced her» saying "Mr. Smlloy, my wife's sister." "Tho hell's fire!" said the l'iker, completely carried Rway in a delirium of delight. Tho ladles nardly know what to nuke of this kind of a reception, and fervently wlshod themselves back among the verdant hills and sunny vale* uf the Far Kast.—[New York Sun.

Sr,
Cot?NTS.—Whenthroe
Irishmen dug a ditch, for which they wore to receive four dollars, the trouble was how to divido four among tbrjo, and havo it equal. One of them remained quiet, and the other two at last deferred to his judgment, as he had been to school and knew arithmetic, to make the division. II© did it at once, saying "It's ftisy enough! Shure, there's two for you two, and two for me, too." "Begorra," said one or his co-laborors, "what a great thing it is to have learningI"--"Aud," said tho other, as he pocketed his s'.ngle dollar, "and to know 'rlthmelle, too It's* the like of as two' I novor divided them four dollars aqu illy!"
A OBI us man who fell over aThomlis cat in tho etitify, on a dark night and afterwards attempted to choke the ani mal without tying Its legs, will, as soon as he recovers, write an ess »y to show that the common bouse c-u, es-
dally tho male variety, is far, very from being domesticated.
