„r YOUNG LOVK. $ i: So Nice to be Engaged.
noticed tbe
great difference, aa a general tiling, be tween the conduct of the yonug betrothed man and the young betrothed woman. He, the braver and stronger of the two. Is utterly confused and bashful, ana seeks to make a secret of |the fact. She, on the contrary, tries to parade it, is proud of it, assumes a certain air of proprietorship over him, and offers to her friends little delicate confidences as to how nice it is to be 'engaged, and how dreadfully jealous be 4s if she loOks at any one else.
The cause of this is Just one thing the man is in love tbe girl is not. I have studied human nature I have looked into the depths of hearts hare made man and woman tbe study of my life, Snd I ayer that tbe girl In love is rarer than a black rose. She simply has for her lover exactlv the feeling that tbe young mother has for her baby. She has an anxious desire to nee him for life, to make sure that be is comfortable, that his buttons are all right, and that his food is what it ought to be. She understands that he is in love with her, and rejoices in the knowledge. Tbe idea of losing bis love is madness to her, but of herself she does not understand it.
A woman who is not selfish, and .greedy, and mean, who does not smile "on any one who can give us fine clothes and graud establishments, overflows with a mother-feeling all her life. Sbe 'expends it on ber dolls in childhood, on her poodle, or her kitten, or ber ca ,aiary atterwaid, and, when the time ''comes, ber lover. Many a man would lose a great deal ot bis conceit and •vanity if he knew just bow the girl -whom he supposed to be in love with him really t'elt. Shu also would be surprised to bear that she was not in love at all, but only doligbted to have some one in love with her, and in a measure awakened to tbe knowledge of that love which she will some day give to her children. It Is the best sort of love too, and when a man's wife really loves him as his mother used to love him, she makes him happy.
But I think it is time that some one who knows the truth should tell it. A good woman's love is something to be happy in—not the fleeting gallantry that man calls by that name, but a pure and high affection, aed with so much of the motherly and protecting in it, that I have often beard a little eighteen-year-old woman say of a six-footer of two hundred pounds' weight, and a briga-dier-general to boot: •'Ob, isn't he a darling, cunning little thing? Just as sweet
It, on the contrary, she should say yes, get married at once, without any fuss and feathers, and proceed to take tbe chances.
I nay take the chances, for these ain't no reslpee lor a perfekt wife, enny more than tharo is for a perfokt husband.
Tbare is Just a menny good wives as tbare is good husbands, and never knew two people married or single, who were determined to mako themselves ngreeable to each other,. but whwt they suckceeded.

[Aunt Mary, in the Ledger. HOW TO PICK OUT A WIFE. Josh Billipgs says: Find a girl that is 19 years old last May, about the right height, with a blue eye, and dark brown hair and white teeth.
Let the girl be good to look at, not too pbond of musik, a firm disbeliever in ghosts, ani one of six children in the same family.
Look well at tbe karakter of ber father see that he is not a member ov enny club, don't bet on elekshuns. and gets shaved at least 3 times a week.
Find out all about her mother, see if she has got a heap of good common sense, study well her likes and dislikes, eat sum ov her bum-made bread and apple dumplins, notiss whether sbe abuses ail ov her nabors or not, ask her servants how long they bav lived tbare, and don't fail tew observe whether her dresses are last year's onos fixt over.
If you are satisfied that the mother would make the right kind ov a mo'h-er-in-law, yu kan safely konklude that the dauter would make the right kind uv a wife.
After these preltmlnarys are all settled, and yu hav done a reasonable amount ov sparking, ask tbe young lady for her heart and hand, and if sho refuses you kan konsider yourself eunhered.

Name your oldest boy some good stout name, not alter some hero, but should the first boy be a girl, I ask it as a favor to me that you kaul her Rebekker.

An Iowa divine arrived in this city last evening on his way west. This morning while taking a walk through the city, he dropped into a saloon, without knowing the nature of tbe placo. He was just about to depart when his atteutlon was attracted by a young fellow crying over the loss of several hundred dollars at three-card monte, which lett him deed broke. To mako a long story short, the fellow was an amateur three-carder himself, and was putting up a lob on the ministor. He was successful, aud won his watbh and chain.
As he put the time-piece in his pockot, he ooollv remarked: "That'll do for Caroline.*'
aware of what he was doing, and al-

most simultaneously with the losln f.
turn, hs threw up his hands and sak., "If God Almighty will torsive me, I'll never gamble again." He also requested thoso who were present not to divulge his name for the world. A portion of the money was returned to him. and instead of going West he returned home, where he will be able to deliver an eloquent sermon on "gamblers and gambling," having had rather a *stly experience. This story msy seem rather strange, but nevertheless, It is true. —[Omaha Bee.
