Some time this month Col. Thompson promises an address at the Opera House in favor of woman suffrage. .. It is Daniel Davis instead of Warren

Davis who is leader of the Asbnry »Choir, and who received that silver JSA| natch on Christmas eve.

Rev. James Hill, with his daughter •wm Emma, was called to Chicago this week by the sad news of the death of his. son-in-law, Col. A. J. Hawle.

One of our fashionable youths on New Year's day donned his first silk hat and cigar, but he had to give up the 'I hat—it made him sick at the stomach.

President Jones, Superintendent Wi-H-ns fey and a number of teachers attended the annual meeting of the State Teacher's Association, at Logansport this

R. W. Rippetoe's employes presentW'M him on New Year's day with a ,. hAndsome gold pen and pencil. He re--is. oei^ed every vote polled, so he is more popular than Edmunds.

Rov. Mr. Howe of the Congregational .church in successive Sunday evenings hsi discussed the questions: "What is it to be a Christain Why aught I to be a Cbristain When will I become a

When they came he lound the logs were abbreviated, that they were 'fringed around the Dottom, and buttoned at the waist with hooks and eyes. ^He doesn't like what he calls the new

Atahlon in drawers. 1? lsaao Herr has retired from the Bra'*11 Miner, in order to enter upon a greater field ot usefulness. Mr. H. is an Exceedingly pleasant and forcible writer, with good newspaper sense.

Under his management the Miner has been one of the best country papers on :our exchange list. We wish him sue^eeas in his new field of labor.

On New Year morning our young friend John Lamb, of the County Treasnwr's office, was the recipient of a hand*some silver watch and chain at the hands of Treasurer Sankay. The olever present is of the value of fifty dollars, but Johnny says he would not part with it for any consideration!—[Journal. I

Rev. 8. M. Stimson, of the First Baptist, and Rev. B. B. Tyler, preaohed their last sermons to their respective ^congregations iMt Sunday. The latter accepts a call to Frankfort, Ky., and the former will recuperate his tailing health. Both go out with mutual love -and aiiection of their respective flocks.

No successor baa been decided upon for either ohuroh. Oar sympathies go with poor Timothy Wren as he wakes his monthly round collecting the assessment made for December by the Oap Company for the offensively odorous, disgusting, sickening stuff forced upan along suf fbrlng gas burning community. People who hurl more canes than greenb.uia at him should know that He is at all to blame.

R. Brattin, of Qreencastle, the wuti known dealer In watches, and jewc *y was in the city yesterday. He imslow: advancing on this city, having recsni.lv planted a branch of his establishment at Brasil, where his mcny friends and customers scattered all up and down the Wabash will find a cordial welcome. By the way, we noticed ki a Qreencastle paper recently that a leading citizen of Terre Haute visited that city to buy of Brattin some three or four hundred dollars worth ofChristmas goo.ls. Mr. B. enjoys a fine reputatiov, especially in the lino oi watches.

Rev. Dr. Jewett preaches at Mattoon to-morrow. Wittig A Co is now the style ef the late firm of Wittig & Dick.

Samnftl T. Reese has retired from carpentering, having formed a partnership with G. JSshman and gone into the more lucrative business of selling lumber,

From statements in the Evansville Journal, Jan. 1st 1873 concerning building operations, it appears that Vry dagh A Clarke, architects, #re preparing plans arid superintending the erection of buildings, equal in amount to the four other firms of professional architects in that city. Thia statement does not include any of the buildings erected in Terre Haute by the above named architects.

LOCAL AND PERSONAL.

LADIES, have you eyer tried Gulick & Berry's "Opera Cologne?" Get a bottle. You will be pleased with it. Nothing like it in the city.

CHARLEY EPPBRT will oontinue during the year 1873 as in years past to give the completest satisfaction as regards quality, style and price of photographs and all kind* ot pictures.

DON'T date your letters 1872 instead of 1873, and during the year don't buy hair goods, hosiery, gloves, laces, lace handkerchiefs, ladies' and gents' underwear until you have looked at T. H. Biddle's well selected stock.

A YOUNG woman has poisoned herself in Vienna, and in a note which she hsd left on a table by the bed on which she lay, she had written: "My last cigar draws very badly, therefore I am tired of life. Good night." Had she bought her cigars of Scott Shoaff she would still be enjoying the blessings of life.

Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious by the fact that J. P. Brennan A Co., the popular Merel»nt Tailors, on Ohio street, will from and after this date, until the spring trade opens, make to ordei suits of clothes for ten per cent, less than their former low prices, for cash only. They have just got in a nice lot of diagonal coatings, and guarantee a good fit. ,i

THE episoot has about run its course, but Austin A Co., who run that ox team through the city (papers) stand by their assertion that they are "AU ways ahead of the market. First in quality, lowest in price." They have a fine stock of Hardware in every variety and neither we nor any of their hundreds upon hundreds of customers have any reason to dispute th6ir claim.,

HERE we are, started in upon anotlier year. Good advice is always in order but never so appropriate, so timely nor so apt to be well received as at this season. And our advice is, buy your groceries, country produce, poultry, grain and feed at Turner A Shilllto's, cornel of Seventh and Main streets. They will treat you well, give you good goods, and at the very bottom prices.^ [[.'$

ENGLES A TUTT, opposite the Opera House, have |25,000 worth of Boots and Shoes, on which they are. offering great inducements lor the next ninety days, to close stock as much as possible before receiving spring goods. Readers of the Mail may depend upon their prices being low. As fast as possible every artiole is being marked down to the lowest price, for caah only. Henceforth this hoase intends to do ft strictly cash business.

AMONG the successful merchants of the past year we chronicle White A Melvin, the popular grocers, southwest corner of Fourth aad Cherry streets. They have a most complete establishment, stocked with the choicest groceries, the freshest oountry produce at ail times, are liberal in their dealing, courteoua to all, aiming in every transaction to do the square thing, These are some of the reasons they command so large a share ol the grocery trade Of Terre Hants. "OLD HONESTY" shoald be his title. Else why is it that year in and year out S. R. Freeman, the jeweler and dealer in watches, clocks, solid silver and plated ware, holds on to customers, including our leading wealthy and most solid cttisens. It is by representing goods just as they are, charging a fair price, and being aatisfied with a comfortable living by industry and frugality. That's why he should be styled '*01d Honesty"—that is, when he grows old.

"HCSK and Nubbins" has a very readable article on the subjeotof "Diaries," ih this week's MaiL The article will commend itseU to every thoughtful person.-" Bartlett can supply in any quantity the. books spoken of, and Diaries of evecy variety, large and email, for the pocket or the desk, elegantly or plainly boundi—indeed all ttales can be supplied from the* fine stock they have selected for 1873. Try the keeping of a diary this year. It is a great deal easier and moreaatisffectory than editing a newspaper.

BEGIN the New Year right by leaving off all bad habits, and purchase your harness, saddles, bridles, whips, trunka and valises, of Petep Miller, in the old post office bnildlng, on Fourth street.

T. H. RIDDLE is so happy over his fine holiday trade, that he Is perfectly reckless in bargains on jewelry, watches, chains, clocks, silver and plated ware, canes, etc. He has one ot the best watchmakers and engravers in the West, and is confident of giving the fullest satisfaction in work of this line.

The frost Is here, And fUel is dear, And woods are sere, And flres barn clear, The frost is here.

And has bitten the heel of the going year. But all who buy their stoves of R. L. Ball, dwell in comfort, and wife in the parlor as well as girl in the kitchen are happy.

D. H. WEIGHT, the popular photographer, did an immense business the past month, and his artistic pictures adorn many hapP7 households as holiday gifta. He la indeed a true artist, and for his enterprise In fitting up a gallery so creditable to Terre Haute, is deserving of the liberal custom he is receiving. -r

To THE pure all thinga are pure." Perhaps we should except pure liquors! But even these can be had it you go to the right place. This is at J.B.Lyne's,opposite the Terre-Haute House. He haa genuine Irish and Scotch Whiskies, Jamaica Ruma, Fine Brandies, and Wines, and is sole agent for Werk's Golden Eagle and other brands of Sparkling Wines.

THE opening of the New Year is a good time to turn over a new leaf, improve upon the past, and form good resolutions.

Among

JUST now with all the talk of new clothing houses and old clothing houses, goods at cost and good below cost, there is 'one heuse that goes on the even tenor of its way, and the patrons of it are satisfied that for the goods they wear no more than a living price is paid. That house, of oourse, is W. H. Bannister's. He' has luat^now, and selling at very low prices, a fine stock of Overcoatings Beavers, plain and fancy, Chinohillas, English Meltons flne English suitings, and most elegant Testings. Call on- Bannister for honest goods at honest prices.

FACTS! FACTS! FACTS 1—Noyes Andrews keeps a first class stock of. boots and shoes. He hss as great variety as any other dealer in town. He alma to sell his goods at as low prices as any honest man can and live, and he aaks his full share of the trade and as much more aa he can get. He aims to treat all his customers well—so well that it they once buy of him, they will thereafter continue to buy. If any of his work turnsoutnot aa good as it waa recommended to be, he will gladlv make it satistactory with that customer and leave him no cause for complaint. If this suits you go and see him.
