PREVENT FELONS HEADING.—
-Take black pepper 'In the kernel and ^palverize well then soak the pepper Vwith spirits of turpentine, and apply to the felon as a poultice. If this remedy is used when the felon first makes its -appearance it is a certain cure in a few applications.
HONEY FRUIT CAKE.—Four eggs, five caps flour, two cups honey, one cup sweet milk, two teaspoonfuls cream of tartar one spoonful soda, one pound of raisins and currants, quarter pound cit ron, one teaspoonful each of cloves cinnamon and nutmeg bake in a large loaf in a slow oven. This will be nice months after baking.
REMEDY FonlI.ua FALLING OUT.Wash tho scalp twice a week with soap suds, then rinse thoroughly in tepid water. Use no dressing for the hair •whatever. The same remedy is also used as a preventitive of dandruff. As the saelp is cleansed, the hair soon grows rapidly, and you are well repaid for your trouble in seeing the tine new hair starting.
APPLE SHORT CAKE.—To one quart of sifted flour add two teaspoonsful of cre*m tartar and one of soda, half a tea spoonful of salt, quarter a pound of butter, sweet milk or cream, enough to mix it. Have the dough rather stiff, roll and bake in a sheet. As soon as baked split open the wholtf cake, spread one piece quickly with butter, cover with well-sweetened apple sauco, pour over some thick sweet cream, grate on nutmeg, place the other half on this crust side down, spread with butter cover wfth apple-sauce, cream, and nut meg.
'Z AN INDIA NX RE VENGE. The Richland county (Wis.) Independent tells a curious story, which it as serts as a fact, to the following effect: An Indian trapper and hunter has been operating in one of the nwth^n towns' of that county, and near his camp lived a farmer. The Indian had a box filled with rattlesnakes, covered over with glass. One day last August the Indian came to the fanner's house, intoxicated, and asked tho fariper to give him a certain sheep that he was preparing for exhibition at the county fair, saying that he was^hungry. This the farmer refused, bat offered him a hen L'j if he would shoot it. The Indian declared that he would have the sheep, and fired at it, but missed it. The farmer then set his dog on tho Indian and drove hian away.
A few nights since, the farmer was awakened lrom his sleep by something cold crawling qver hiui, and, seizing the object, he nurled it across the room. He was horritiod to hear the noise of rattles In every direction. Telling his wife to lie quiet for her life, he rahod up and turned up the light, when he saw a huge rattlesnake coiled up &t the loot of the bed, ready for a spring. Seizing his revolver he fired anctshot off its head. The noise of the pistol aroused the hired man, who hastened to he room, and before reaching it (the door was cpen,) killed two rattlesnakes. Two more were killed in the
bed-room, making five in all. At the -Jv foot of the bed was "the Indian's box. It is supposed that he entered the open ,« window and emptied the snakes out on tho bed. 1» I«i f:
S* I10W11E TOOK IT. The Toledo Blade tells a story of a Northern soldier who was made a crip*J pie at Stone River, After the war, in conversation with a' comrade, he said: "Yes, I am doing pretty well, not making much, but doing pretty well.
Have just been to see my wife. She marriod another man,you know. No! Didn't you know it? Yes, she married another fellow before I got homo. 'Dlvorce!' No. She just married him, 'J and throw ins ovorboard, yon know.
It out me a little to have the woman throw me off, but I looked at the ques--a tion from her standpoint, and it's all right. Then I got worked up a little, "t and thought had better steal the '".'children from the stefr-iatber. So I went up to see them again. Would yon believe It? Thoy said they didn't want "T. to live with ine, if thoy had to leave their mother. So I said 'all right,' and came away again. You see, my girl is smart. Sho know that, with my lame leg and arm, I couldn't support her right, and the little duck told ma so with hor arms around my neck, lhat finished mo,you know." "But," Bald the friend, "the woman is legally your wife." "I know It," said Jim "but if I was stubborn and claimed her you see she would have to take in washing to sup-

the family. Logality is the thing, oan't do anything much, to have her working so tor me. I couldn't stand that half as I can the way it is now. No, sir, logality don't help the matter. I will never te comfortable any way. She'd marry after I was dead so what's the uso of whimpering now."
JEWISH VIEW OF CHRISTMAS An editoriil in Hearth and Home urges a Christian spirit in the keeping of Christmas, nreacning a pretty sermon from a text furnished by a Jew, who always observed the festal day "Even yon Christians differ a good deal in your -heorles as to who aad what this man Jesus was, and your theological differences are quite as marked as are those w^ich separato my people irotn you. Bit you all agree upon certain points tegardlngthe great teaci:er, and upon these there is equal harmony betweetyou and me. Whatever I may bollerfabout him, I love the man who preathed the Sermon on the Mount, which in Itself the whole of morality and taligion. There are two or thrtt or his sententious re marks, each l| which is in itself the sum of all lawtind the sum of all righteousness: 'Lfre one another 'Thou shalt love tho'Lord thy God a and thy neighbor as thyself.* These are the spirit all his words, and for these I love anf honor this greatest of all my uatlon'^prophets.".
A LIVELY serhon on the "VioefofCKe Age" was prestiieti in St. Louis reoectly by Rey. Dr.Holland, of that city, and in the coxtse of his remarks he said: "iThe middle classes spsnd their inoome In keepbg up false appearances. They, too^must wear dove-ool-ored pantaloons fid shiny boots. They must wear diaqond sends and seal rings, and carry oung ladies to the opera in hired callages, at the rate of three hours' use br three days' wages. They must takei turn now and then at billiards, stati treat to the cocktails, bet upon .heir veracity when called In question and, last of all, lest they should la teemed timid, must demonstrate the! nerve by 'fighting the tiger,'until llelaws the last dime out of their pookas, *nd olaws lssting scratches npon tfaar souls. The only safeguard against vloe is work not work as the Slave, Vho works to eat and oats to work, but iork to reach a hich er plane of effort, mt only of the body, bnt of the mind—tirk, whatever it be, whether for a dayA week, a month, or a lifetime, honeetit and cheerfully, as one who expects tofsontemplate its results forever.
