Bad
India)%-
[Frotli the Overland Monthly.] On the reservation there one# lived an Indian who www thoroughly bad in every respect that he was generarty known by tueaoubriquet the "Ynka Devil." He committed all the seven deadly sins aod a good many more, if not every day of his life, at least as often as be could.
One day he wandered off a conslderable way from the reserve, accompanied by two of his tribal brethren, and tbey I fell upon and wantonly murdered three squaws, without any known provocation whatever. They were pursued by I a detachment of the garrison, overtak«n, captured, carried back menacled band and loot, and consigned to the guard-house. In some Inexplicable i.: manner the Devil contrived to break his fetters aaunder, and then tied them on again with twine, in such a fashion I that when the turnkey came along on f* a tour of inspection, be perceived noth ing amiss.
Being tuken out for some purpose or other Hoon afterward, he aeized the opportuny to wrench oft his manacles and escaped. But he was speedily overtakI on again and brought down with a bullet, which wounded him slightly, taken back to tb«» guard-bouse, heavily Ironed, and cast into a dungeon. Here he feigued doatb. For lour days he never swallowed a eruui of nourishment. tasted no water, breathed no breath that could be discovered, and liy with every muscle relaxed like a corpses. To all human perception be was dead, exoept that his body did not become rigid or oold.
At last a vessel of water was placed on a table bard by information oi that fact was casually imparted to birri in his native speech all the attendants withdrew, the dungeon relapsed into silence, and he was Hecretly watched.
After a long time, when prolound stillness prevailed, and when the watchman had bORun to believe be was In a trance at least, he cautiously lifted up his head, gazed Healthily all around him, scrutinize'! «very cranny and crevlco of Unlit, then softly crawled on all fours to Him table, taking care not clank lih chain* the while, took down thf pitcher, and drank, deep and long.
They rushed in upon him, but upon tli instant—so fatuous was the obstinacy ol the savage—bo dropped at if he had boon shot, and again simulated death. But ho was now informed that his play was quite too shallow for any further purposes, and as soon as the gallows could be put in order, the executioners entored and p'nlnly toldjhim that the preparations were fully completed for bis taking off.
He made no sign. Tberi, half dragging, half carrying the inlsorable wretch, they conducted him forth to the Mcaffold. All limp and flaoid and norvnli'Kh, a« he is, they lift him upon the platform but still ho makes not the least motion, and exhibit* no conMclousnesa ot ail tbea« stum and grim preparations. lie 1m supported Itl an upright poslllon between two soldiers, hanging a lifclOHM burden upon their shoulders f:
his hoad Is lifted up from hh breast, whoro It droops in heavy helplessness the new-bought ropo, cold and hard *\nd prickly, Is colled about his neck, and the huge knot properly adjusted at the Hide the merciful cap, which shuts oil" tlioso henrt-slckening preparations frotn tho eyes of the faint and shuddering criminal, is dispensed with, and everything is In perfect readinoss.
Tho solemn stillnoss befitting the awful spectacle about to bo ouacted Jails upon the few spectators tho fatal nlgnal is glved tho drop swiltly descends tho supporting soldiers sink with It as It abuut to vanish Into the oarth and hide their eyes from the tragedy with a dead, dull thud the tightening ropo wrenches tho poor savage from their upbearing shoulders Into pitiless midair and tho Yuka Devil, hanging tbero without atwltchorshlvor, quickly passos from simulated to unequivocal and unmistakable death.

jk ABOUT TEXAS. Tho visitor to Texas is astonished when he thids many of tho chief articles in the sustenanco of lile lacking their places upon tho table—-articles which ahould bo more plentiful here than in any other region of the country on the globe. And just here is where the outot, sedate, formal M«jor of
Kansas City, met with tho most bitter disappointment In his Southern trip. Tho Major Is exceedingly fond of mils. In fact, milk was his tlrst diet, and being constant and inflexible in alibis movements and designs, ho has not in maturer years forgotten his tirst love, but clung to that love, rather, with all the tenacity and persevoranoe of age and youth.
Immediately upon entering Ttfxas soil, at our first dinner, the Mtyor looked anxiously about the table for some evidence or the presence of his love. Ills recoinnoitre was a painful one. There waa no milk nor any ovidence oi its presence to be found. "Waiter, bring me a glass of milk." r, "We have none, sir!" fv- "What J"
In blank horror the'walter wilted
fore the thunder tones or that exclamation. ••What!"' again roared the "Can It be jHMsiblo that you have no milk?" "i aasure you not a drop, sir.*1 "Then I'll tind aotne in another house." Ho saying, he grasped his hal and hurried out or therootu,**
Before we had finished our dinner, however, Major I, returned, almost out of breath, a twinkleof his eye, and joy beaming out ooidly oil over his broad face. "Knn»ka! Eureka!" nnd he placed on the table by his plate a pint or unlklsh white liqulu. A good eye at once saw that it wo* not pure milk, that thin white-yellow substance. Major 1 thought he had the genuine article. The liqr.ld waa drank, however, and then the Major discovered that w«« an Inferior quality of condensed milk/ "Is it possible," he afterwards remarked to a Texan, "Is It possible that with tbm*and* of cattle gracing upon vour hide you have no milk that with the tnoet magnificent grass country in the where you make no bntwr,"
world, *»d your pralrir* ereryre covemi with good cows, that
Yet such Is the fact, .Nearly every pound of better consumed in Tfcxa* is imported, and alt the milk to be had there eosnee in the Kria of a condensed article fro «n the Northern 6iat««^ With all the facilUiee for products of the soil necessary for bay rsUin*, yet Texas burs nln«*teuths of her bacon, hams, and lord, iroru her 3Tortliertt sister NUtes, With soil nnsnrpsissed for corn, otu, and wheat, hei^ greater part of those products are Imported. The chief Maple of Texas eoti is cotton, and to that product former* devote their attention to the dettiment of everything else. Time and immigration, however, will produce a great chouge in that r»|» net as well aa oU*»rs» Keen, (nor folic laruier* will disco
that all the necessaries of life can be produced on their plantations witnotit neglecting their great staple, cotton.
It will. b« a glorious day lor Texas when such a state of affairs is inaugurated. For even as it is now the exports of the State forthe3'ear 1870 exceeded its imports in the sum of twenty million dollars sol^*
What, then, may we expect of Texas when the soil is made to produce everything of which it is cspable! The balance of trade in its favor will assuire hage proportions and its people will eujoy an era of prosperity and plenty beyond the most sanguine anticipations of its most hopeful and farseeing inhabitants.
