O UMBS' HORSE.
Gumbs," said the m»n, after exam ining the animal, "that bora® baa got the gastraoerysipelatoos. Yoa a better paint bia neck with turpentine and put a fly-blister on bis nose.'
Gumbs followed these directions, and tbe next morning tbe horso's neck vu raw from tbe jawbone to tbe aboalder, and be bad on his tose a swelling as large as the born of a rbi noceros.
Gumbs was scared, and sent for a liv-ery-stable man, wbo looked at the horse and said: "Gambs, there is nothing tbe matter with that horse bat a little attack of iuppozymosis! Just mix some molas ges and rum. and give it to him in bis feed, and he'll bo all right to-morrow
Gumbs gave bim a gallon of rum and molasses, and that night bis borse went snorting around tbe stable with tbe delirium tremens, kicked half tbe edifice into splinters, and nearly choked himself trying to eat the breeching band, uuinbs found the horse in tbe morning in a more deplorable condi tion than over. So be called in a veter inary surgeon, wbo cast his eye over tbe animal, and observed to Gumbs: "Mr. Gumbs, this i» a genuine cat# of bippotyphoid laryngitis! What
Jectedhorse
rour wants is cayenne pepper in into tbe nostrils, and bourh doses of aconite and ursenicivm mixed pint for pint, and fed with cut hay."
Gumbs immediately went around and bought a gallon of cayenne pepper and a cart load of tbe drugs. Tbe horse sneeted all that night with such sonority and energy that be kept Everybody in the neighborhood awake and, when Gumbs visited tbe stable next morning, be was alarmed to find his horse's eyes terribly Inflamed with red pepper, and his nose worse than ever, while thd body of tbe animal was swel led by tbe aconite until it was as large around as a sugar hogshead. Then Gumbs rushed around to another veterinary surgeon, and, when he came viewed the horse lor a few moments, and said "I tell you, Mr. Gumbs, your borse has got hipporbinorrbea, and got it bad!'"
Then, of course, tbe borse will die," said CumbM, "if it has come to that." "Not necessarily," remarked the doctor. "Just got a barrel ol coal-tar and sulphur, and burn it under the horse's nose lor a lew hours to disinfect him, then feed him, and let him rost."
And Gumbs did. IIo burnod that stulT under the horse's nose, and tbe animal suffocated in a quarter of an hour and, when Gumbs catne in too see how the mcdicino was working, he found the stable in ilimes and an underdone bay borsu lying in the holiest portion of the fiie.
So Gumbs hua lost Ills horso arul be foels encouraged beeiuso, just after the fire was extinguished, anothoi surgeon came in, and, when he heard Guinbs story, ho comforted Gumbs by remarking that there was nothing the matter with the borse in tbe first place, and that he was a deluded ass for everscrubblng the animal with turpentine and blistering him, and for listening to the talcs of the other lunatics who came tlioro to polHon and suffocate tho unhi'ppy brute.
A STATE LED BY WOMEN. Among t'io Holland possessions po .there is a remarkable little State which in its constitution and theorlglnal cus^toms of Its inhabitants, surpasses the ^boldest dreams of American emanclpation ladles. In all policies ot life insurance these, atnoug a host ot other questions, occur: Age of father, if living?" "Age of mother, If living?" A tnsn in the country who tilled up an application made his fsther'a age, if living, l!#) years, and his mother's 102. Tho agent was amasod at this showing, and landed he had got an excellent subject but, feeling somewhat dubious, remarked that the jnati came of a very long-lived family. "Oh! you see. air," replied the applicant "my parent* died many years ago, but'if living'would be aged as there put down." "Oh! I seo," said the age .it.
