A Kentucky cat, who had previously won golden opinions from her mistress by her squirrel bunting proclivities, lately cast a gloom over the family bv bringing in a skunk she had captured. A GIRL OF it Ell VE.

How She Saved Iter Life on a Jtaiirofid

From tho TiUuivllle Herald, Nov. 4.) A short distance this sido of Union, on tho Union and TItusvlllo Railroad, there is a very long and very high trestle, and ono upon which nobody ventures who Is at all inclined to be lighthxaded. I in nied lately this side of the trcstlo there Is a sharp curve In tho road, so that a person walking on it can not be seen by"the ongineer of an approaching train until it in noarly upon him. Ou Friday last, as Win. Toles, oitglnoor, caino around tho curve at a good rato of speed, lie was liorrilicd to alscovor a lady about tho middle of tho irostlo. and within hardly a train's length of him. Quick as thought, although his hair was nut king frantic efforts to lift his hat oil, "Billy" whistled down brakes, gavo her sand, and threw back tho roversing lever, while at the same time he knew that It was an utter impossibility to check tha heavy train before the victim would bo overovertakeu aud caushed to death, and with fixed eye^» he awaited the catastrophe. Tho lady heard tho warning whistle, nnd turning her bead saw the Iron monster almost upon her. Escape seemed impossible, to remain was certain death, to jump to tho ground beneath. a dlstauoe of thirty or forty feet, oqually certain death, and to attempt to run ahead and escape was out of the question. Unlikoten thousand ladies, out of ten thousand and ono,, alio did not scream or faint, or Indulge in any nonsense of any kind, but realising the situation in an instant, and taking the chances nil in, she proceeded to an action which saved her life, in a manner that would have been an honor to the coolness and presence of mind of an Old campaigner, or a lifelong frontiersman. About thlrtv inches below the ends of tho lies, and Immediately under the stringer which supports them, there is a Joist five inches wide, running from one support of tho trestle to Miiother, and to this tho clear-headed girl resorted for safety. Stepping to the ends of the ties .-he swung herself down to the narrow thread with all tho apparout ease of a gymnast, and with hur arms clasped around it stretched herself at full length along it, as the train thundered by, almost over her. As soon as the engineer saw her action he threw ofT his brakes, and putting on steam, hurried past us soon ss pos».ib, when she hubly sprang to the track again and pursued her journey as though nothing had happened. But every woman wuo had a huslnnd or sweetneart on that train has cause to be jealous of that bravo young lady.

A WIKK murderer, named Jenkins, was hsuged at Waahington the other dsy. His tillejto mansions in theskiee was the clearest of any of the murderers who ha ve gone to glory from the gallows thst wo have read of. When, during (ho reading of tho death warrant, the day of his exeention was mentioned, he exclaimed, "Yea, that's to-d*y thank (ifnl, 1 will soon put on toy robes and nwivo a crown of glory." Aa the moment for the dmptoisll approached, he said, with emphasis, "As *oon as the deed is done my soul will waft to glory. I know that God has a crown prepared for me, and I shall soon wear IU'" Ho was very considerate toward the sheriff and oflicera, and left them as his last piece of advice, to "continue In the path of virtue, and Til meet you." It does not appear that he said anrthlns aoout meeting his murdered wlfa. Perhaps bis Idea was that having put her off In her sins she has no chance for heaven, while he, bavihg time to repent and he converted, will thus bo separated from her.
