MARBLES, How THEY ARK MADE.— As soon in the Spring as Jack Frost vacates village sidewalks, bovs and marbles begin to occupy it. It is quite .safe to predict that during the month of May not a village can be found in all the Northern United States of America without its marbling.
Bays, do yon know where your mar Jle3 are made? Possibly you arethe happy owners of some fine old English marbles, beauti fully variegated, or of some pure white "alleys*" Or you may know the pride of ownership in a precious "tsw" which seems to have some mysterioasj power of its own.
Various kinds of patent marbles have been manufactured. Many are made of potter's clay, glazed and burned in a furnace others of marble or alabaster, In Saxony, marbles are made by break ing a hard stone into square blocks with a hammer. Tho blocks are then assorted into groups of various sizes About one hundred of these blocks are put upon a stone slab, which has bedn out into concentric grooves. Hunt up the meanings of these two words in the ^dictionary if you
Go
not know them al
ready. Over this slab is another of oak .supported by a lever, which is turned by the power of the mill, while little streams of water are let into the grooves to prevent the wood getting too hot by friction, and also to help make the marbles round. In about fifteen minutes they are ready for market. A mill containing three of these blocks will make 60,000 ordinary mar bles in a week. After they have been "sorted" and worn down on grind stones, and scraped, they are conpleted by friction against each other in cylinders of hard wood or stone.—They Jire polished by putting^emery into the cylinders. They are colored in zinc-lin-ed vessels and in small quantities, the coloring matter being poured upon them iroin time to time. The dust of calcined tin is applied to give them pol ish. Do you know that great quanti ties ol marbles are sent to India and China? Most of the beautiful "agates" which boys prize so highly come from a mill at Obenstein, on the Nahe, in
Germany. Patent marbles are known by the names of Dutchman, Frenchman and Chlnauien. How many ot the following games at marbles do you know? Kggs in the bush, Bounce oyo, Coquer, Die short, Increase pound, KnOck out, JjOng taw, Bridget board, Odd or even, ihe Pyramid, Picking the plums, King mw, Spans and snops, Bounce about, iiree holesj, Teetotum shot, and Tij. viares?—Hearth and Home,**
Lettkus of Recommendation.—A '-'-ntieman advertised for a boy to assist him in his oflice, and nearly fitty applicants presented themselves. Out it the whole number he in a short time selected ono and dismissed the rest. "I should like to know," daid a friend, "on what ground you solectedthat boy, who had not a single recommendation." "You are mistaken," said tho gentle ii. iii "he had a great man}', Jle wip" liis feet when ho came in, and closed the door after him showing that he \v:t.s careful. lie gttvo up his seat instantly to that lame old man, showing th:tt he was kind and thoughtful. Ho tO'ik off his cap when lie came in, and answered my questions promptly and re* ectfully, showing that ho was polite' and gentlemanly. Ho picked up the book which I had purposely laid upon the floor, and replaced it upon the tnble, while all the rest stepped over it or shoved It aside. And he •waited quietly for his turn, instead ol pushing and crowding, showing that lie was honest and orderly. When I taltfed with him I noticed that his clotacs were carefully brushed, his hair .ill nice ordor, and his teeth as white astrtillc and when he wroto his name I n«ii:ed that his finger nails were dead, instead of being tipped with jet like that handsome little fellow's in the blue jacket. Ddn't yon call those things lottors of recommendation 1 do, and I would give more for what I Van tell about a boy by using my eyes 'ten Winutns than all the fine letters he .canbring me." .nitlvh.
What Smokino Dors kor Boys.—A certain doctor, struck with tho large number of boj's under 15 years of age whom he observed smoking, was led to inquiro into the effect the habit had upon the general health. He took for his purposo boys, aged from to 15, and carefully examined them. In 27 of them lie discovered injurious traces oflhefifabit. In 23 there were various disorders of tho circulation and digestion, palpitation of tho bdart, and a

or tcss marked taste /or strong drinks.

In 12 there was frequent bleed
ing of the nose 10 had disturbed sleep, and 12 bad slight ulceration of the mucous mem bra no of the mouth, which disappeared on ceasing from tho us© of tobacco for some days.
The doctor treated them all for weakness. but with littlo effect until the smoking was discontinued, when hoalth and strength were soon restored.
Now, this is no "old wife's tale," as theso facls are givf-n on tho authority of the Bti^h MedioflJournal.
Tub firaft deposit in the Kllenville (I'lster Co.) Savings Bank was math* by a boy who earned tho money by picking up bones. A correspondent ol the Kllenville Journal thus tells the story:
Pass-book number one was issued to a lod of tlve years, who, on hearing that there was to bo a safe pl.rce lor keeping tnonOy lie re, set himself to accumulating a small pile on his own ac count and, on being encouraged by
friends, gortogetlier five dollars in time to bn first in his application. This was done chiefly by picking up and furnishing material for tho ^ouo-mill at LeureuklU, for which he got lc. lb. His example stimulated his elder brother he, too, must havei a fund iu tho new bank, and It than the little sister of years dlu noi
