More limestone pavements have been laid already this spring than during any former season. They give oar city a substantial footing.

HKZKKIAH COE is his name, and be lived in the coanty of Clay. Matrimony was bis mania. He proposed to and was rejected by every yoaag lady within a circuit of ten milee. At last, when hope long deferred, bad made bis heart severely sick, be found a girl, many miles from bis home, who listened to his addresses, and favorsd his suit. He pushed things. The wedding day was set. The guests were sssombled. The happy pair stood up before the holy man, and the eeremony was about to begin. But at this point Hesekish's old lack caugbt up with him again, and bit him a prostrating blow. The clergyman asked for the marriage liconse. Ilezeklah had forgotten all about that or rather had never thought to procure it. The parson refused .to proceed without the all-important document. Tbe county clerk's office wss twelve miles dlstsnt snd tbe evening was far advanced. So the wedding bad to be postponed till next day. With a sad heart Hesekiah Journeyed toward Bowling Green to secure a legal permit to depart from bis hated single life. As he rode along he beard the olatter of swift boots behind him—hoof-beats that were tbe knell of his hopes for he who thus rode toward the sorrowful lleseklab wss the brother of bis intended, tbe lady who bad stood up to be married and sat down unmarried. Reflecting on the failure, she had become dissatisfied with tbe proposed alliance, and dispatched her brother with a peremptory dismissal. Hesekiah read the uote that told his dolorous doom, replying thereto never a word. But he determined to quit forever tbe soene of his many disappointments, and go to the Far West where be might bury himself In the solitude of tbe boundless forest. He rode bis horse into this city, sold the animal for |lfiO and croeeed tbe Vandalia's Wabash bridge last night. To a friend who shook his hand at parting, in the cars, at the depot, he said "For twenty years the single purpose of my soul hss been to get otsrried. Thirty times 1 have prepoeed, and thirty girls have elevated their thirty noeea and sixty eyebrows to emphasise the crael sneer with which they have rejected my hand. I began with a brave heart. One refusal did not annoy me much ten did not discourage me twenty did not cool my ardor twenty-five did not check my oareer and even the twentyninth left me still hopeful of ultimate success. And when, after all these years of waiting, the thirtieth consented to share my name and bisect my fortune, I waa the happiest man in Indiana. Horaoe Greeley was not more jubilsnt over the news from Cincinnati, than was I when thst little, low-mur-mured 'yes' fell on my longing ear. But the awful dmoumrttt has 'frosen the genlat current of my soul.' I feel that my race Is aboat ran. Tell my friends that I shall be seen no more in theee parts. I waa evidently made for that Better Land where'there is neither marrying nor giving in marriage.' That country would suits man litre me."

A young oouple from Greene ooiinty, on matrimonial plans intent, aktpped through the city this morning only half an hear ahead of the girl's enraged papa. The old man waa furious, and swore a blood-curdling oath which threatened the integrity of the young fellcw's Interior anatomy in its most vital part. He appeared to be tbe proprietor of many daughters and a private graveyard where he had interred scores of unacceptable applicants tor the position of son-in-law.

TERRE-HAUTE SAYUKLAY EVENING MAIL. MAY 86.1872.

WBOETBB walka aboat town will •otloo hundreds oftotoMtn that the politicians ofTsrre Haute are getting unusually warm in politics. Tksy hare oommoaood the Presidential eaa vase early, and are conducting It In a apirit which to aa mtotaken aa It la in had taste. Both sides at* sharpening lanoea of ridicule and hurling missllss of sbnse st each other, aad earleataring the weakness, magnifying the defects and asssiling with vituperation the livee of the candidates. We oppoee thto plan of carrying on the campaign We oppoee it becauae it to a felse principle to attempt to manufacture public opinion by a distortion of facta. It to unworthy of a good citisen to use sny mesns to win succees in a political campaign but feir, Just argument upon the merits of tbe principlee of a platform, snd frank discaaaien ot ths abilities of the candidalss. We believe this to be the only wsy to win the endorsement of voters. In the minds of the people uot much engroesed in politics the prejudice which hss governed them too much in the past when called upon to pass political Judgment is steadily passing away. They are becoming deliberate and thoughtful. They are tearing to lean more upon their own opinions and less upon political leaders. They have found that many of those whom they have elevated to high positions are entirely devoted to sc Itadvancement. Tney have learned that the people should be

the

leaders and not

the followers of the skillful, selfish politicians. They have learned to weigh the difference between the Journal which is partisan and one which is impartial. And we believe that the acquirement of this knowledge will destroy the influence of unscrupulous and unfair denunciation of a candidate for office, whether ooming from the lips of a political harangue or from the columns of the press.
