RIDTNG-HOOD.

Cool and dark the Shadows glimmered In the gloomy, grim old wood, where, with careless lingering footsteps,

Wandered fair Red Rioing-Hood.

HOW TO SPEND SUNDAY.

Some Practical Suggestion* That Will Inter/ere With no Man*8 Liberty—How to Get Bid of a Dull Sunday.

By law every citizen in this State ha* the privilege of not doing on Sunday lavs, him, he can do which what different thi will make this Sunday privilege a pro

what he is obliged to do on other da,

The ve la 11

'ery practical question meets different thinjrs

0

We wish to suggest some things which can be done to add interest to the Sunday of those who find its freedom dull.

Take an hour Sunday morning and sit down alone, and think what you have done during the past week, and agitate the question whether you have done just as you really think is best and mean to keep on doing.

Have you told any lies the past week? Count them on your fingers, if you can, and seriously consider whether you always mean to bo a liar?

Did you get drunk during the past week, or ootne near it? Did you talk temperanoe and visit the cupboard to take those now "bitters Did you sell any poisoned liquor for good, or any poor home llqor at a fancy price under a foreign brand? Was ft well? bo you always expect to do such things, iind when will you stop?

Have you abused your neighbor, run tTl down you competitor In other stores, slandored other politicians, or I woman's roputation the past These things are unspeakably mean you know they are. God be thanked If you haven't done them if But somebody doos them. I ask that somebody whether he always Intended to be a mean follow

Have you gambled or slunk into infamous dens the past week? Nobody is obliged to toll me. But many do go to vile places every week, Sundays included. Is It a good plan to keep on What will twenty years of such practice make a man

Have you cheated anybody In the last ten days Have you deceived any employer or kept back the just iy of any workmau Have you advertised deceptions of auy kind? Does any money stick to you, which belongs to anybody else? Are you going to make a permanent cheat of yourself? I)o you want to die as a carpet-bagger? What's f' hinder It If you are cheating now

Did you swoar last woek? Don't you swoar rather more than you used to, when your mother taught yon Is there any particular benefit In It? Let us see if you can stop for a week

Are you nonsmoking too many cigars —running up debts which you don't know how to pay making a larger swell than you capital jnstlfles—and getting ready for a smash and ruin? We hope not. But all these things happen, and if any one Is over-doing himself In these days, ought he not to know it and settle whether his oourse is best?

It strikes us, that an hour on Sunday of cool, healthy consideration of the actual status aiid doings of our weekday lives would be an interesting employment, whether satisfactory or not.

Take another hour on Sunday to do somebody some good for which you haven't the time on any other day. Write a letter to the mother or brother, or sister, whom you have forgotten for along time. Hunt out a friend who has disappeared from yous interest.and renew a cordial acquaintance. Find out somebody who is suffering and carry -*ah cheer to him or her. Go to see the fblks who would be glad to see you, hut whom you are not always glad to

9ee.

Visit the families of those who *re working hard to make themselves rich. Help to put some kind of a homesling into everybody who is homeless. There are plenty of good acts, which are not common—and on Sunday you want to do something uncommon, that Is what the day is made for. I'm talking to people who And Sunday dull and the church unmeaning, and do not care to pay religion much attention, I do not want to drive yon where you ds not want to go. But we ought all of us to make of Snnday a finer day than the rest of day*, because we have the chance. Our dally toll makes ns dull. Sunday

to meeting or to sing psalms, or

to learn catechism, or to read sermons to fill up his time. Every one can pick

out some new and unlaborious employ

ment, and if he knows how, can have sixteen free and happy hours on one day in seven. It is of no use to object to Sunday as a Puritan Sunday, for the law makes it a free day, and forbids work so that it shall be free. It is a somewhat singular fact, that with this chance of a free day so many can find nothing better to do than to do business and work just as on other days, as it we did not all work hard enough from Monday morning to Saturday night. It is also something of a commentary en the capacity of many people for improvement and enjoyment that after a little extra scrubbing and dressing is finished on Sunday morning, they don't know what tp do with themselves for tjie rest of the day, and only consent to go to church because it is a little less stupid than to sit at home and gape at their own dullness instead of a preaoher's. Some try a cigar and a novel, others a big dinner and a nap, others sitting around a big stove and spitting at it. But after all these resources have failed the only thing left is to wish for Monday and go to bed very early. Happy are those who in Mucn an emergency have young ladles on whom they may call.

or Beautt.—Ladles If

you would have hesuty by the bottlefull, all you hsrs to do Is to purchase Hagan's Magnolia Balm. That peerless beautlfier of the complexion not only heightens natural charms, but "renders even the plainest countenance .exceedingly attractive. It recalls to the pallia cheek the rosy tinge of health, removes pimples, blotches, roughness, sallowness and other blemishes, and imparts to the skin a most delicate fairness and softness. It smooths the furrows csused by time or care, and gives face neck snd arms the plump ana engaging appearance of youthful beauty. All this is accomplished by the most natural means, vis: by gently and naturally stimulating the circulation in the capillary blood vessels. Besides being the most effectual aid to beauty known to modern scienoe.

GALES OF

SEWING MACHINES FOB 1871.

The magnitude to which the sewing ma' chine business has grown Is only surpassed by the rivalry of the varloas competitors, few of whom are unfamiliar with the nu meroas artifices resorted to for the commendation and sale of the particular machine sought to be sold. If the number of sales be any criterion of merit, the Singer seems to bear the palm, as shown by sworn returns of the companies, made undr the licenses granted them by the owners of the sewing machine patents, and which are as follows: THE8INOER MP'Q
